Provide services within stipulated period: DC

Fatehgarh Sahib, August 25
The officials must redress the grievances of people and their work should be done within the stipulated period as per the provisions of the Right to Service Act, so that they don’t face unnecessary harassment. This was stated by Yashveer Mahajan, Deputy Commissioner, while presiding over a meeting of district heads of various departments here today. If anybody was found responsible for delay, a suitable action under the Civil Services Act would be initiated against that official, he added.

The meeting was called to look into the progress of ongoing development works of various departments.

He said the government had listed 67 services related to health, transport, revenue, rural water supply, social security, food and civil supply and police departments, which would be provided within stipulated time period. He asked the heads of the departments to send the report regarding the implementation of the Right to Service Act by September 5.

He advised officials to undertake tree plantation drive under the "Punjab Green Campaignā€¯ through MANREGA scheme. The Deputy Commissioner has asked to ensure that all vehicle owners install high security number plates on their vehicles. He has directed the civil surgeon to ensure that specialist doctors attend OPD daily, so that the patients don’t suffer.

The function was organised at Khalsa College. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Walia expressed his heartiest gratitude to all, who had played a pivotal role in the growth of his career.

He assured l that the University will always pave way for new researches as Sri Guru Granth Sahib offers inexhaustible topics of research.

“We are sure that under the headship of Dr Walia, the university will create its place among the top universities of the world, Former SGPC president, Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar, said.”

Pothholed roads add to people's agony

Dera Bassi, August 25
The residents of Dera Bassi have been facing problems due to the poor condition of roads here. Some main roads, including Tehsil road, Government College and Longowal College roads are also lying in bad condition. During morning and evening, particularly in the rainy seasons, students and other commuters face problems due to the poor condition of roads. The residents have been continually demanding the repair of the roads as poor condition of them causing inconvenience to people.

Varinder Jain, Executive Officer, Dera Bassi Municipal Council, said roads will be repaired soon. Earlier, repairing work was stopped to lay sewerage in some parts of the town.

JCC win by 141 runs, move into semifinals

Jain Cricket Club, Patiala, (JCC) defeated Friends Cricket Club, Samana, by 141 runs in the ongoing Heavenz League Open Cricket Tournament.

The tournament is being played at Army Ground. The Jain Cricket Club won the toss and elected to bat first.

It scored 243 for 7 in allotted 50 over match. Following the win, Jain Cricket Club has made its way into the semifinal of the Heavenz League Open Cricket Tournament.

Main contributions came from Sunpreet Singh 61, Aman Kumar 62 and Gaganature 40.

In reply, the Friends Cricket Club (FCC), Samana, started its inning in disappointing fashion and kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Only Pargat 14, Monu 26 and Happy 18 could manage double figures following a deadly spell of leg spin by Vishek who claimed 4 for 13.

Youth dupes woman of Rs 80,000

Kalka, August 25
Saroj Ahuja, a resident of kalka, have lodged a complaint against an unknown youth, who illegally withdrew Rs 80,000 from her account. In her complaint to the Pinjore police the victim alleged, that on August 15, 2012, she had went to the ATM of SBI to withdraw money from her account. Meanwhile, a youth was also standing there , who helped her in withdrawing the money.

But on August 21, when she again went to withdraw some money, her account showed zero balance. She said when she enquired about the matter in the SBI, she was told by the bank that on August 15 the balance of her account was Rs 92,000 and Rs 80,000 were withdrawn by her from the same ATM.

The women later came to know that the youth had exchanged his ATM with her during the withdrawal of Rs 12,000 on August 15, after knowing her secret code.

The police have registered a case of forgery against the unidentified youth.

Judicial remand for constable

Chandigarh, August 25
A local court today sent police constable Jatinder Singh, who was yesterday caught accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000, to 14 days judicial custody.

Jatinder, who was posted posted in the technical cell at the police headquarters, was caught red-handed by the CBI at his residence at the Police Lines, Sector 26.

A Sector 15-based shopkeeper had filed a complaint that the constable was harassing him as he had found a mobile phone lying abandoned. The constable was asking for money, he had said.

The owner of the missing phone had complained to the police and the technical cell had put his mobile on surveillance. — TNS

Jatinderjit sent to judicial custody

Mohali, August 25
The court today sent Jatinderjit Singh, an accused in the parking rage incident at Phase VI, to judicial custody today.

Jatinderjit Singh, who had fired two shots at Innova car, belonging to his neighbour, over the parking issue was arrested yesterday. The police has also recovered the licenced weapon, a .32 bore revolver, used in the crime from the accused possession.

Notably, panic was created in a residential area when Jatinderjit had flattened two tyres of the vehicle belonging to Gurpreet Singh by firing two shots on Thursday morning. It was a dispute over parking of vehicles in front of Jatinderjit’s house.

Jatinderjit Singh runs an immigration consultancy service business from his house. A case under Sections 336 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against the suspect.

Foreigner held for overstay

Chandigarh, August 25
The police today arrested a nationalist of Uzbekistan for overstaying in India. The woman was earlier arrested in 2004 but was acquitted in 2009. However, she didn't return to her country.

Foreign nationalist, who has been identified as Faroza, is a resident of Mutaphalik Bukhara, Uzbeksitan, has been arrested under the section 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946, for illegal stay in India.

The SHO of the Sector-3 police station, Inspector Neeraj Sarna, said the foreigner came to India in 2004 on a tourist visa. She was arrested on the same charges but was acquitted by the court in 2009. However, she neither got her visa extended nor did she return to her country.

"She disappeared after her acquittal. Meanwhile, we got the information that Faroza was back in the city and we arrested here once again," the SHO said.

The police ruled out any possibility of the foreigner involved in any kind of crime under the NDPS Act.

She was produced before a district court which sent her to judicial custody.

2 employees of PU held for embezzlement

Chandigarh, August 25
The UT police today registered a case against two employees of Panjab University for withdrawing cash from the Punjab University Employees Fund. Both the employees have been booked under Section 409 and 120-B of the IPC.

A complaint was filed by PU Chief Security Officer (CSO) PK Dhawan against the two PU employees. “Ajay Kumar Gupta, who works at the PU account branch and Ashutosh Sharma, senior assistant at the university, transferred about Rs 3.30 lakh to their account which was actually to be transferred to Aruna Sood’s account,” Dhawan said.

He added Ajay transferred the amount to Ashutosh’s account on July 11. The woman later came to know about the fraud and reported it to the university.

The SHO of the Sector 11 police station, Gurmukh Singh, said the police found that both the PU employees transferred the cash to their accounts and on being coming under the scanner Ashutosh deposited some amount in Ajay’s account who further transferred it back to Aruna’s account.

Ajay’s services have been terminated while Ashutosh has been suspension.

Juvenile scuffles with home guard

High drama prevails when a juvenile inmate and a home guard volunteer of the Chandigarh Police engaged in heated arguments with each other inside the Juvenile Home, Sector 25, Chandigarh, today.

The incident took place this morning when the juvenile, who was put on the ground floor in the category of repeated offenders, started shouting and the volunteer, Naresh Kumar, tried to pacify him.

Sources maintained Naresh tried to overpower the juvenile, who caught him from his collar and also called up the police.

Sources said the juvenile was shouting and singing in a loud voice in the balcony. Even when a female staff member raised an objection to it, he did not pay any heed to the warning.

The volunteer was appointed for the security of the Juvenile Home by the Chandigarh Police.

Sub-Inspector Harminder Singh, in-charge of the Sector 24 police post, said a detailed DDR was lodged in this regard.

Man robbed of Rs 27 lakh

In yet another incident in Panchkula, a resident of Lalru was robbed of Rs 27 lakh by five unidentified youths at Barwala today.

The victim, Sampuran Singh, a property dealer, was on his way back to Lalru after taking a token payment from a resident of Barwala as he had a deal struck.

“Sampuran Singh and his friend, Pawan Randhawa, had struck a land deal with a resident of Mowli village, Mamta. Sampuran was to collect the token money from Mamta and while he was on way back to Lalru, five youths in a Swift car stopped Sampuran’s car forcibly at Barwala,” said the SHO of the Chandimandir police station, Narender Kumar.

Narender said, “The youths tried to snatch the bag containing money. But when Sampuran resisted, they fired some shots in the air and threatened to kill him. Sampuran got so scared and handed over the bag to them after which the youths fled.”

A case has been registered at the Chandimandir police station. This is the third incident in the last 20 days.

It was on August 10, when three youths were robbed of cash Rs 48,000 and mobile phones by four unidentified youths. The robbers had posed themselves to be officials of the excise department and stopped the victims.

Jalandhar to lock horns with Chandigarh in final

The Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar, will face Chandigarh Hockey Academy, Sector 42, in the final of ongoing 11th ONGC SN Vohra Memorial (U-14) Hockey Tournament, tomorrow.

In the semi-finals of the tourney played today, the Surjit Hockey Academy overcame the CRZ Hockey Academy, Sonepat, by 2-1. For the loosing side, Sunny scored the first goal in the 5th minute but the Surjit Academy came back through Gurpreet in the 29th minute and Kuljeet scored the decider in the 48th minute of the match.

In the second semi-final, the CHA defeated SSGS Vidya Mandir, Ratwara Sahib, by a solitary goal scored by Pushpinder in the 63rd inute.

Earlier, the Jarkhar Hockey Academy, Ludhiana, defeated BP Hockey Academy, Butala, by 3-2. The wining side took the lead through Pawanpreet in the 5th minute while Butala side levelled the score in the 11th minute through Babbaldeep. The Butala team took the lead after scoring 22nd minute with Raman Kumar striking the wooden plank. Later, Jarkhar team levelled the score with Rakesh scoring the goal in the 32nd minute while Sunil sealed the team’s victory by the 44th minute.

The CRZ School Sonepat defeated MRS Academy, Amritsar, by 11-0. Mohit (4th minute), Sunny (10th minute), Deepak (16th minute), Abhishek (19th minute, 21st minute, 22nd minute, 30th minute, 48th minute, 60th minute), Sunny (26th minute) and Deepak (56th minute) were the main scorers for the team.

In other match, the MGH Academy, Doraha, beat MRS Hockey Academy, Amritsar, by 4-0. Arpit (16th minute), Rakesh (27th minute, 38th minute) and Babbdeep (46th minute) did the honours. The local side, CFHA overcame BP Hockey Academy, Butala, by 4-0 with Sukhman (12th), Harnek (26th minute, 46th minute) and Maninder (35th minute) scoring the goals.

In the ongoing Panchkula District Table Tennis Championship, the players of Manav Mangal School lifted the title of Boys (U-18) while Bhavan Vidyalaya won girls (U-18) event, here today.

The team of Manav Mangal lifted the trophy for the sixth consecutive year. In the finals of Boys (U-18) category, the wining side posted a 3-2 win over Bhavan Vidyalaya 3-2 whereas in the Girls (U-18) team championship, the team of Bhavan overcame Manav Mangal by 3-2.

Tennis players Bhavraj Singh and Shreyas Chopra moved in the qualifying rounds after defeating their respective opponents during the ongoing CLTA-AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament for Boys and Girls (U-14 and U-18), at the CLTA Courts, here today.

In the singles qualifying first round matches, Bhavraj Singh overcame Nikhil Savank by 8-2 while Shreyas registered an easy 8-2 win over Parth Kakkar.

In the ongoing Inter-School Roller Skating Tournament for Boys (U-4 to U-11), Gurnoor Singh of St. Stephen’s School, Sector 45, won first place while Aryan Dua managed to attain second place category, here today.

Kartik Jindal of St Kabir Public School, Sector 26, and Tanvir Singh Dehol of KBDAV, Sector 7, won third and fourth place, respectively.

In the event of Line boys, Vihan Wadhawan of Vivek High School, Sector 38, and Rishit Puri of Gurukul Global School claimed top two spots while Haren Chaudhary finished third in the competition.
