New Delhi, August 20
People of the northeastern (NE) origin residing in Delhi have remained substantially unaffected by the ongoing ethnic riots in Assam and the proactive SMSes and MMSes that triggered off the exodus of hundreds of them from Bangaluru, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad to their native places.

This, however, has not been overruled by the people here and many have resorted to social networking websites to caution people against falling trap to the rumour-mongering by the alleged foreign extremist groups, as also pointed out by the Home Ministry.

"In Delhi, things have been peaceful. We are about 30-40 from Assam. We are trying to spread the message that people should not panic and act sensibly," said Shailendra, an MNC employee who resides in Lajpat Nagar.

Though students studying at Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University, which have a good population from the NE states, are not that worried, it is their parents back in their hometowns who are said to be expressing concerns.

"The matter is a point of concern but people are now aware about the motive of those who have done it. We are meeting students through room-to-room campaign and telling them not to panic as there has been no untoward incident as of now," said Debarun Baruah, a student of Law Faculty at DU and in charge North-East cell of the ABVP. The Delhi police has increased its patrolling across the DU campuses and close to the hostels housing N-E students.

"Students have siblings in other metro cities from where violence is being reported, so the concerns are obvious. We are using social networking sites to reach out to people," added Debarun.

Dean of Students' Welfare, DU, J.M. Khurana, said that the situation is normal on the campuses and no complaints have come to us. "We are in touch with the college principals and there is no such problem. Security measures have been stepped up across the campus, especially around Rajiv Gandhi Hostel and another in Dakka area," said Khurana.

"All have been very friendly here at the college and we feel safe here. But due to recent incidents in other cities, our parents have asked us to take precautions while venturing out," said Yaiphabi and Deviya, both from Manipur and first-year students of botany at DU.

Even the Delhi police does not want to take any chance and going proactive several of its SHOs and senior officials are holding meetings with the N-E people residing in different areas here. In a similar meeting, Amar Colony police station SHO Govind Sharma discussed with representatives of the NE regions about their concerns and circulated helpline numbers.
