Jalandhar, August 7
The Punjab Roadways and PUNBUS Conductor Union called off the strike after its demands were accepted by the Director Transport on late Monday night.
The union had started their four-day long strike from Monday. They had demanded regularisation of contractual employees. A notification regarding the same was also issued yesterday. Union president Gurmej Singh said they had decided to keep the buses off road from today onwards. “A meeting of the union members took place at Chandigarh yesterday and the decision was announced,” he added.

“It was such a respite for conductors of Punjab Roadways and PUNBUS who were employed on a contractual basis in 2007. The union members were demanding regularisation of jobs, but the government was simply giving us false assurances. We are thankful to the government for accepting our demands,” he added.

The union members maintained that this decision would benefit 4,500 conductors of Punjab Roadways and PUNBUS who were employed as contractual employees. “We have been demanding similar grades as applicable to the permanent staff. Our agitation bore fruits and all our demands have been met,” they said.
