Abohar students shine at science exhibition
: Students of LRS DAV Senior Secondary Model School have topped the Regional CBSE Science Exhibition held at Jalandhar, principal of the school Kusum Khungar said. While Yashda and Saugaat Jain of class X represented the school under the sub-theme 'Health', Vidushi and Ashureet of class XI (Science) represented under the sub-theme 'Agriculture and Food Security' and bagged the first prize. A total of 100 schools participated in the exhibition where as many 200 models were put on display.

Mid-day meal workers hold protest
: The Mid Day Meal Workers Union, Punjab, organised a protest rally at Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall here today. Addressing the rally, union leaders demanded that the workers be given a salary of at least Rs 5,100 per month.

Rs 5 lakh for school
: An US-based NRI, Manmohan Singh Banwait, funded Rs five lakh for constructing classrooms at Government Senior Secondary School, Langroya. Principal Amarjit Lal lauded the gesture of the NRI.

Woman killed in mishap
: Darshna Rani was killed and her husband Balihar Singh was injured in an accident when the scooter they were riding was hit by a bus near Dharmkot locality on the Phagwara-Hoshiarpur road today. The couple belonged to Baddo village. The police has registered a case and sent the body to the Civil Hospital for the postmortem examination.

Plantation drive : Two lakh saplings would be planted in government and private institutions in Kapurthala by next year, announced Deputy Commissioner Kapurthala Alaknanda Dayal after launching a plantation drive in Bhularai and Chack Prema villages in Phagwara here today.

: Armymen celebrated vanmahotsav by planting saplings at Mamun Military Station here today. Brig RK Raina inaugurated a tree plantation drive and urged people to plant trees and preserve ecology.

: Tributes were paid to former minister and industrialist Om Parkash Jindal here on Tuesday on his birth anniversary. Havans were performed at OP Jindal Park in Gujri Mahal, Jindal Park in Mill Gate, Jindal Knowledge Centre and Prithvi Raj Chauhan Crossing. The statues of Jindal were garlanded by his admirers.

: Praveen Kumar of Sadhaura has lodged a complaint with the police that his father Jai Prakash was killed on the spot when a truck hit his car near Ishargarh village overbridge on Monday.

: Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Lokesh Gupta has sentenced Renu’s husband and five others, all residents of Pranpura village, to rigorous imprisonment for two years in a case of dowry harassment and criminal breach of trust. Besides, the judge has also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on each of the six convicts.

Fire at petrol station
: Two filling machines of a petrol pump located on the Begu  Road caught fire today. Timely action by workers, who put the fire  fighting system into service immediately besides intimating the fire services, prevented a bigger accident. Harbhajan Singh, owner of the petrol pump, said the exact reason of fire was not immediately known, but it could be due to an electric short circuit.

Boy found drowned in water tank
: Aman Singh (10), son of Sarwan Singh of Bhuwaai-Jala Devi village near Suharghat, was found drowned in a water tank near the village today. Reports said a student of Class IV at Government Primary School, Chhamb Bhujaan, Aman had gone to play in the village. He is said to have slipped and fallen into this tank. Villagers fished out his body from the tank. The tank was full of water due rain.

Motorcyclist killed
:One person was killed on the spot and another seriously injured when they were riding on a motorcycle near Bharmour Chowk in Chamba town last night, according to a police report received here today.The deceased had been identified as Vinod Kumar who was driving the motorbike and the injured Shiv Kumar. Both belonged to the Sultanpur area of the town. The body of the deceased had been handed over to his family after carrying out an autopsy.

Man held under NDPS Act
:The Kathua police today arrested a person and recovered 5 kg of poppy straw smuggled into the state.
The police had set up a checkpoint at Kharote Morh, where they intercepted a truck (JK08A 7703). The truck driver, Gulshan Kumar, of Merth was arrested. A case has been registered under Section 8 and 15, NDPS Act, at the Kathua police station.

Two killed
:Two passengers were killed while 24 sustained injuries when a private bus fell into a gorge near Bageshwar town today. The deceased have been identified as Jung Bahadur Singh, a resident of Jhiroli village, and Kewalanand of Okhali Sirod village. The bus was on its way to Bageshwar from Haldwani. Jagdish Pant, a passenger, said the accident took place when the driver lost control over the bus while giving way to a vehicle.
