Special buses nowhere to be seen

The much hyped move of the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) to start special buses for schoolchildren after the tragic death of Anupama has failed to yield anything as the ground reality check on these buses today revealed it was a “free for all” on board these buses.

Woman, son injured as tiles come off at PGI

She came to the premier health institute for treatment of severe shoulder ache from Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh. Little did she know that she would end up getting admitted to the Advanced Trauma Centre of the PGI along with her five-year-old son with injuries on her head.

Otherwise largely unknown to the general public till 2008, Anuradha Bali, aka Fiza, daughter of a retired Army engineer, had tryst with romance, betrayal and power struggle during her life. Anxiety and emotional trauma did not leave her side till her death.

Police suspicious about activities at P'kula flat

In the Fiza death case, the investigators have found that something 'hanky panky' was going on in the flat at Sector 20, Panchkula, where Fiza had stayed for around 10 days with some advocate friend.

During her stay in a flat at Sector 20, Panchkula, for about 10 days, Fiza maintained an erratic behaviour there too. “She had parked the car on the wrong side in the society and when I requested her to park it at the right place, she suddenly flared up and was even ready to manhandle me.

MC decides to impose house tax
Chandigarh, August 7 The municipal corporation (MC) has finally decided to impose house tax in the city. Mayor Raj Bala Malik stated this during a coordination meeting of the MC and UT Administration chaired by the UT Adviser to Administrator KK Sharma today.

MC challans 60 auto-rickshaws 
Chandigarh, August 7
In a special drive, the enforcement wing of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) today removed and lifted three-wheelers parked illegally on the pavement and at the public place in Sector 22, opposite Sector 17 bus stand, and Sector 35 near the Kisan Bhawan.

EWS houses: Allotment rules violated
Chandigarh, August 7 More than 70 per cent of the houses belonging to the economically weaker sections (EWS) of society across the city are either sold out or rented in violation of the allotment rules. Though the estate office is still compiling the information, sources reveal that figure was in hundreds in every sector.

Notices issued to police commissioner, 2 others

District and Sessions Judge issued notices to three senior police officers including, Police Commissioner of Ludhiana, for not complying to the court orders today. The court has given two weeks time to the officers for presenting their case.

One-year imprisonment for FCI assistant manager

The CBI court today pronounced one year imprisonment to the assistant manager of the Food Corporation of India (FCI), who was convicted on August 4 by the court.

Bail plea of two accused rejected

In a major development in the Raipur Rani kidnapping case, the sessions court today dismissed the bail of the two accused involved in the case. The accused, Salim and Kamaljeet had applied for bail on August 3 when the case was committed from the lower court to the sessions court.

Adulterated cold drink, beer seized from industrial area
Chandigarh, August 7
A team of the UT police today raided a juice and drinks unit in Industrial Area and seized over 600 bottles of adulterated cold drinks, beer and juice that were being manufactured under the most unhygienic conditions. The police has arrested two persons who are the owners of the unit under sections 272 and 273 (adulteration of food) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC.

45 take part in cricket trials for women

The Chandigarh Cricket Association conducted trials to select the girls cricket team for the Non-Residential Women Cricket Academy today. The academy will start functioning at the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, from August 11.

Judokas of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, attained the first place with 28 points during the ongoing inter-school judo competition for boys (U-19) being held at the Sector 42 sports complex today. The team from IS Dev Samaj, Sector 21, finished runners-up with 21 points, while Government Model Senior Secondary School-35 came third.

Arshdeep wins gold in under-19 tournament

Arshdeep of Ryan International School bagged the gold medal while Raziya of Government High School, Mouli, won the silver in the 42-45 kg category during the ongoing choi-ko-wang-do inter-school championship of girls (U-19) today. Ashu of Government Senior Secondary School sector 44 won the bronze medal.
