Chandigarh, August 7 The suspect, Jaspal Singh, was selling the diesel to truckers in Daria village. A team of the Excise Department intercepted a vehicle carrying three containers of 1,000 litres capacity each. While two containers were carrying diesel, the third one was empty. The officials in the Excise Department said the seizure could be the tip of the iceberg. It is being believed that the smuggled diesel was regularly sold in Chandigarh. City sports infrastucture lies unused
Chandigarh, August 7 The city has a fine football stadium in Sector 17 and another one in the sports complex of Sector 42. And notably, no fee or ground rent is charged form the UT education department to use these ground for organising such tourneys. Just 10 days ago the department had organised the Pre-Subroto Football Cup at the ground in Sector 17. "We have our own grounds and prefer to organise tournaments there. Probably due to the rainy season, the grounds must be in bad condition. We have organised national tournaments in same grounds," said Rajeev Tandon, assistant education officer. "If we organise these competitions in stadiums, we have to arrange man power for marking and cleaning the ground. But in government schools we have our own peons fulfilling all our requirements," he added. When asked about the Pre-Suboroto Football Cup organised at the Sector 17 football stadium, the official said, "You (the reporter) should contact Amardeep Singh for this because he is heading the organising committee of inter-school competitions. However, the officials probably took the decision as the number of teams participating here is not very high." Amardeep Singh, head of the committee organising inter-school competitions, was unavailable for comments. A visit to the tournament venue revealed that players are having a tough time playing there. "The ground is in a really bad condition. Some parts have uneven patches of grass and it is quite hard to run. Getting injured and having blood wounds is a normal thing here. The city is full of nice, lush green grounds and players are much more comfortable playing there. We don't know what the organisers had in mind when they chose the venue, but from a player's perspective, this ground is not upto the mark for playing,' said a group of local players. An official requesting anonymity said, "These tournaments are being held since a long time and have been organised in a similar manner through these years. The authorities should keep in mind the fact that the requirements and playing conditions of athletes have changed. There is an immediate need to organise this tournament properly."
