Pathankot, August 1
Ajit Kumar, a resident, has claimed that the Pathankot police was not registering a case against some youths, who had allegedly misbehaved with her teenaged daughter in the parking lot of Ajay Mahajan Hospital, Dalhousie road, on July 5.

The father of an MSc (biotechnology) student has claimed that his daughter had gone to the hospital to see her grandmother who was recuperating there.

He added that when she was trying to park her scooter in the parking area of the hospital, four youths sitting in a car allegedly misbehaved with her and her brother. These youths, who were later joined by three other boys who arrived on the scene on motorcycles, allegedly beat up her brother apart from misbehaving with the girl.

“The boys even pushed my daughter inside the car. However, when she resisted and raised an alarm, the boys fled from the scene along with their motorcycle-borne accomplices,” claimed Ajit Kumar in an e-mail to the SSP SK Kalia.

The harried father, who said that he had been running from pillar to post to get a criminal case registered against the culprits, said the SHO of Police Station No 2 summoned his daughter to the police station on July 9 to get her statement recorded. “My daughter’s statement was recorded four days after the incident, in the absence of any female officer which is against the rules.”

“On July 18 we again met the Senior Superintendent of Police who assured us that action will be taken against the culprits. However, despite the fact that my family has been receiving threatening calls, the police has done nothing. I have also provided the mobile phone number from which we have got intimidating calls.”

Ajit Kumar, who is a resident of New Rajinder Nagar colony, near Shivpura Mohalla, said the police was not taking any action because the youths belonged to politically well-connected families. He said an influential SAD youth leader was also helping the accused.

SSP SK Kalia, when contacted, had a different story to tell. “I have got a preliminary inquiry conducted by DSP Varinder Singh who has said that the girl had threatened the boys without any provocation and had with the help of her brother she had actually beaten up a couple of them. We will take action if it is proved that the boys were at fault,” he disclosed.

He said the police was not under any political pressure. “The law will take its own course,” said Kalia.

Gurdaspur, August 1
A couple, who entered into an inter-caste marriage, has alleged that the police was not taking action against the family of the girl who was harassing the couple.

Acting on the compliant of the boy, Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police Ravcharan Singh Brar, has asked a DSP-rank officer to conduct an inquiry into the incident.

Mangaldeep Singh, a resident of Dehriwal Droga village, falling under the jurisdiction of Dhariwal police station, has claimed that a few months ago he fell in love with Prabhjot Kaur, a girl of the same village.

He said since it was an inter-caste marriage, the parents of the girl did not approve of the relationship following which he was left with no option except to elope with the girl. The couple tied the knot on July 8 in Panchkula as per Hindu traditions.

On July 10 when the couple returned to their native village, the girl’s family started threatening Mangaldeep with dire consequences if his family did not send their daughter back to them.

Sensing that things would get out of hand, the boy approached the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) which on July 24 ordered the Gurdaspur police to provide security cover to the couple.

The day after the couple returned home after seeking security from the PSHRC, the girl’s family barged into Mangaldeep’s house and assaulted the couple. “My wife was kidnapped by her parents and other relatives following which I decided to approach the Dhariwal police station. However, the SHO refused to listen to me and instead started forcing me to sign the divorce papers.”

Later, a harried Mangaldeep approached SSP RS Brar and showed him the PSHRC orders. The SSP, after taking cognisance of the boy’s complaint, ordered a thorough investigation into his allegations.

“I have asked a DSP-rank officer to conduct an inquiry. I have also assured Mangaldeep that action will surely be taken against his in-laws if there was even an iota of truth in his allegations. I am still awaiting the inquiry report,” added the SSP.

In yet another twist to the tale, Mangaldeep Singh said two days ago his wife called him up and informed him that she was being ruthlessly beaten up by her parents. “She asked me to get her released from the clutches of her family members,” disclosed the boy.

“I have pinned all my hopes on the inquiry being conducted by the DSP. The police should also provide me with security based on the orders of the PSHRC,” he said.

Residents bitter over soaring sugar prices

Jalandhar, August 1
Sugar prices are zooming with traders allegedly resorting to hoarding and the ongoing strike of wholesale sugar merchants. The latter have stopped lifting stocks from sugar mills in protest against the imposition of VAT by the state government.

The situation is likely to worsen with traders threatening not to lift sugar stocks untill the decision on VAT is taken back. Wholesale sugar merchants haver been on strike since July 24.

Sugar prices have gone up sharply in the past 10 days from Rs 31 per kg 10 days ago to Rs 39 per kg now. In urban areas, it is being sold at Rs 43 per kg in rural areas on the pretext that sugarcane production has been hit because of lack of rains in UP and Maharashtra.

When contacted, Pritam Singh Arora, president of the Wholesale Sugar Dealers Association, said: “We are already paying excise on sugar at the rate of Re 1 per kg. Now the government has burdened us with VAT at Rs 2 per kg. We are left with no alternative than to go on strike against the ‘discriminatory’ orders.”

Inder Dev Kapoor, secretary of the association, said: “There will be no sugar available in the market once the existing stocks with retailers get exhausted. The prices are bound to rise in such a situation.”

Meanwhile, wholesale sugar traders submitted a memorandum to senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia here today.
