CAT nullifies IGP’s order on constables 
Chandigarh, August 1
In a significant order, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has ruled that the constables in the UT Police will be sent for promotional course on the basis of seniority. As many as 350 constables had moved the CAT in September, 2011, seeking directions to the UT Administration to send the constables to the promotional courses purely on the basis of seniority-cum-merit as the Chandigarh Police department had been doing the same right from 1982.

AI flight fails to land in city

Passengers return following the failure of a Delhi-bound AI flight to land in Chandigarh on Wednesday. Tribune photo: nitin mittal An Air India flight from Delhi to Chandigarh returned after it could not land at the airport today. The flight was to arrive at 10.45 am, but it did not take off from Delhi due to low visibility. When it did, it attempted to land at the airport in the afternoon, but failed to do so. It then returned to Delhi.

Youth fires shots into air, arrested 
Chandigarh, August 1
The police today arrested a 22-year-old youth for firing two gunshots into the air in the Sector 8 market late last night. The police has arrested Pawandeep Singh, son of the owner of Gobind Sweets in Sector 7, under various sections of the Arms Act.

Members of the Halwai Association of Chandigarh said they had already sold 100 tonnes of sweets, a day before Raksha Bandhan. They added that the sales were up by 7 per cent this year.

Sabharwal takes charge as DPR

MM Sabharwal, a PCS officer, took over the charge of Director Public Relations in the UT Administration here today. Yogesh Kumar, who was relieved from the charge of DPR today, is now holding only the charge of Joint Registrar, Cooperative Societies.

‘Only 65 pc breastfed babies in first two hours’

In a recent study conducted by the PGI among city women, only 65 per cent of the new mothers were found to have chosen breastfeeding in the first two hours of baby’s birth. According to experts, it is crucial for a baby’s health.

Man crushed to death at Ambala roadways depot

A man was crushed when a driver was reversing the bus at the roadways depot in Ambala City. The deceased has been identified as Harkesh Kumar (54). Harkesh was working as a clerk, at the roadway depot in Ambala City. The deceased was a resident of Shahpur Machonda village close to Ambala Cantonment.

10 get Judicial custody

Panchkula, August 1
All the 10 accused in the Apna Ghar case were produced through video-conferencing in the CBI court today where the court sent them to 14-day judicial custody. Out of the 10 accused, two had applied for bail, however, their hearing application has been postponed to August 7.

No evidence against SHO, CBI tells court
Chandigarh, August 1
Stating that the investigating agency had no evidence regarding the involvement of a former SHO in a corruption case, the CBI today stated in the court that the application filed by the complainant seeking that the SHO be made an accused in the case was irrelevant.

Third accused held

Chandigarh, August 1
The crime branch of the UT Police today arrested the third accused involved in the Sector 22 murder. It has arrested Rakesh, alias Pachar, for the murder of Kailash Chand, owner of a provision store in Sector 22, on July 26. He will be produced in the court tomorrow. Two other accused had already been arrested.

Auto driver arrested
Chandigarh, August 1
The police today arrested the driver of a three-wheeler for obstructing a woman constable from performing duty. The police arrested Nasim Khan, a resident of Sector 49.

Tanya beats Himani in straight games

Tanya defeated Himani 11-0, 11-6, 12-10 while Sanya overcame Deeksha 11-2, 11-4, 11-5 during the girls (U-15) District School Games held here.

Chess tourney in city from August 4 
Chandigarh, July 30
The Chandigarh Chess Association will organise Open Boys and Girls (U-9 and U-19) Chess Championship at St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, on August 4 and 5. During the competition two boys and two girls in each category will be selected to represent the city in the Chess Nationals to be held in Gujarat (U-9) from October 1 and Rajasthan (U-19) from September 5 to 14.

Punjab U-22 team awarded Rs 20 lakh for winning CK Nayudu Trophy
Chandigarh, August 1
The Punjab boys (U-22) team, which won the Col CK Nayudu Trophy, was honoured with a cash prize of Rs 20 lakh (10 lakh from Board of Control for Cricket in India with an equal contribution from the Punjab Cricket Association) in the 64th Annual General Body Meeting of the PCA held here. Amritsar won the award of the best district and also the cash prize of Rs 5 lakh while Patiala was declared the second best district and awarded Rs 2.5 lakh.

MC to hold rural sports meet on Aug 9-10

State badminton championship to be held from Aug 16

The Chandigarh Badminton Association will organise the State Badminton Championship for boys and girls from August 16 to 20 in Chandigarh. The tourney would be conducted in all age groups, including U-10, U-13, U-15, U-17, U-19, and also in senior boys and girls category.
