Gurdaspur, August 5
A high-level team of the Planning Commission has inspected water-logged areas of Ferozepur, Muktsar and Faridkot following which remedial measures are being taken to remove the menace of waterlogging.

Dr Ashwani Kumar, Planning, Science and Technology Minister, said a delegation led by eminent scientist Dr Mihir Shah, who is also the secretary of the Samaj Pragati Sahayog- an NGO that fosters water and food security in the dry lands of India, visited the water-logged areas of Punjab and soon an elaborate plan would be chalked out to set right the ecological balance of the area.

Rubbishing the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s claim that the UPA government was ignoring the development of the state, the Union Minister said the Congress-led Central Government was doing enough for the state and added that the CM should not unduly worry on this count.

Citing an example, Dr Ashwani Kumar said in a letter dated July 26, the Planning Ministry had offered to fund the Ludhiana metro rail project. He claimed that the project was conceptualised in 2008, but till yet nothing concrete had happened. “I have asked the state government to reassess the entire project after which the Planning Commission will ensure that funds are relocated for it,” Dr Kumar added.

The minister disclosed that the Central government had floated several welfare schemes, but the Punjab government had not taken any interests in any of these ventures. “The rest of the states were taking advantage of these schemes and were flourishing. There is a skill development programme meant for youth and I have written to the Punjab Government to make optimum use of it because it will provide jobs to nearly 20 lakh youngsters of the state.”

Dr Ashwani Kumar added that he had asked the state government to avail central government funds meant for the upgradation of industrial training institutes (ITIs).
