Poll fever still to grip city
Jalandhar, June 1 The candidates have put up a very few hoardings in their wards to garner support of the voters. They perhaps do not intend to spend much on the campaign or apprehend action from the officials having seen strictness during the Assembly polls. The use of small-size stickers on walls and gates of houses is the most common means of campaign. The use of flags has also gone down. Also, auto-rickshaws for the candidates’ campaign are also hardly visible on roads. The only expenditure that most candidates have been doing is by offering meals, tea and cold drinks to the residents of wards coming to their offices the day through. Interestingly, the number of contestants is also far low this time with as many as eight wards having just two contestants and two wards already going unopposed in favour of the ruling SAD. There are no Left parties candidates contesting the elections. There are just six contestants from the BSP in wards 6, 9, 53, 54, 58 and 60, while the party had also announced candidates from wards 1, 23 and 40. While on an average seven to eight contestants from a ward have been contesting till previous years, the average this time is four to five. Wards 31 to 40 have the least candidates, while those from wards 51 to 60 have the maximum number of contestants. It is a mixed bag of young and old contesting the polls. Some young candidates in fray include PPP contestant Neetu Khosla from Ward 2, Rohit Kumar Vicky of the SAD from Ward 13, Rajinder Shekhar, Rajesh Jindal and Sakait Goraya Shetty of the Congress from wards 16, 28 and 38, respectively. Rajan Angural of the BJP from Ward 48 is also a young face. There are several oldies also in the poll battle as are Sardari Lal and Sawaran Singh of the Congress from wards 52 and 53. |

Jalandhar, May 31
The area around Gurdwara Diwan Asthaan is perhaps the lowest and water from all surrounding localities accumulates here in rainy season. The Old Jawahar Nagar colony is also well-maintained with all facilities, including raised pavements, streetlights and two parks. A park near a water tank has swings and shady trees, but a fountain put up in the centre does not work. There are pipal trees coming out of it. Another issue of the residents is that the otherwise wide Ladowali Road falling in the ward has been reduced to a narrow lane owing to encroachments by car dealers selling spare parts and shells. Areas in ward
Central Town, Shivaji Park, Chahar Bagh, Phagwara Gate, Krishan Nagar, Ajit Press Wali Gali, Ramesh Colony, Old Jawahar Nagar, Arjun Nagar, Masit Ghumaria, Ladowali Road. Councillor speak Over Rs 2 crore have been spent on development works in my ward in the past five years. The most important work left in my ward is laying of better drainage system in Central Town. I already have got pipes laid, but we need to improvise the system so that the rainwater does not stand for more than half an hour. — Rajinder Beri Residents speak Thankfully, our roads are well-maintained. There is no water or sewerage problem. The problem of water blocking in some lanes of Central Town, however, needs to be looked into. — Vijay Kumar There are no civic issues for us. Law and order of course is a problem. Since there are 12 lanes in the colony criss-crossing at short intervals, the miscreants manage to escape quickly on their bikes after committing the crime. — Shashi Joshi |
CT students come up with detachable e-bike
Jalandhar, June 1 It is a single-seat bike which can even be converted into a double seater. The gross weight of the bike is just 45 kg. It has a feature of getting split into three parts, for the ease of storing when not in use or for carrying it for outdoor activities in a van. The vehicle is in fact a fusion of a bicycle and bike. The overall shape resembles a creature of the dinosaur era, so the students from the electrical trade, who have designed it, have named it “Predator”. Explaining the concept, the students - Charanjit Singh, Ashish Sharma, Rajandeep Singh, Davinder Singh, Manish Kumar and Amit Bhalla - said the bike had a battery-powered rear-wheel drive with a direct current (DC) motor, Al-cast rim and an integrated hub motor assembly. “To provide it dynamic balancing, the battery pack is centrally mounted. The micro-controller-base device governs all other necessary functions like torque, speed and voltage regulation. A hand-operated throttle has also been provided to run the bike at different speeds. Once fully charged, batteries can cover a distance of 60 km,” they said. |
