Teacher beats up girl
Admitted to hospital with back injuries; had recently undergone treatment for heart ailment
Samrala, June 1
The victim, Simran, who sustained back injuries after her teacher beat her up, admitted at the Civil Hospital in Samrala on Friday.
In a shocking incident, a government schoolteacher allegedly beat up a girl student, who recently underwent treatment for a heart ailment. Although the incident took place at Lal Kalan village on May 30, the matter came to light today when the girl was admitted to the local Civil Hospital with back injuries.

Factory worker gets stuck in escalator, dies
Ludhiana, June 1
An 18-year-old youth died due to asphyxiation after an escalator meant to ferry building material on the top floor of a box factory got stuck in Deep Vihar near Bahadurke Road in the Salem Tabri area here today.

Garments, dry cleaning to cost more now

In the aftermath of the hike in petrol prices, garment manufacturers and dry cleaners are all set to increase the prices of their products and services. The increase in petrol prices will lead to a rise in the cost of garments by 40-45 per cent and dry cleaning services by 20 per cent.

Man gets 10-yr for rape
Ludhiana, June 1
Sessions Judge Gobinder Singh Matharoo has convicted Paramjit Singh, a resident of Haibowal Kalan, of rape. He was sentenced to 10-year rigorous imprisonment and was told to pay Rs 5,000 as fine.

5 kg opium seized at Machchiwara
Machchiwara, June 1
The Machchiwara police has claimed to have arrested a man and seized 5 kg of opium from his possession. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Samrala Tejbir Singh and Station House Officer (SHO) Machchiwara Harjinder Singh said at a press conference that a police party nabbed the accused during a routine check here last night.

Close shave for passengers as bus overturns
Khanna, June 1
The LPG cylinders that did not explode even after a bus overturned. Passengers had a miraculous escape when the bus in which they were travelling overturned near Khanna, but four LPG cylinders that were in the bus did not explode. As many as 24 passengers were, however, injured in the accident. Three cylinders were filled and the fourth was being used to cook a meal during the journey. Fear gripped passengers who thought the cylinders would explode.

Poll code delaying opening of bridge
Ludhiana, June 1
The incomplete Gill Road flyover on the Sidhwan Canal Expressway in Ludhiana. The opening of the Gill Road Bridge located on the Sidhwan Canal Expressway project has been delayed further. PWD minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon had on March 31 announced that this bridge would be opened to vehicular traffic by May 30. But, the project remains incomplete even after passing of this deadline.

Filthy water floods streets
Jagraon, June 1
Water from sewerage floods a street of Gandhi Nagar in Jagraon. The residents of Gandhi Nagar and Ajit Nagar localities situated on Raikot Road, Jagraon, have been forced to live in a highly unhygienic condition. The streets of both these localities are flooded with sewerage water due to chocked sewerage system that has turned the lives of the residents into a virtual hell.

Admission to BCom colleges on city periphery goes online
Ludhiana, June 1
Admission to BCom I of the Panjab University affiliated college falling in ‘urban conglomerate’ of Ludhiana city will take place via the centralised online counselling system from this year. Urban conglomerate are the peripheral areas located within 1-km boundary of a city.

Vendors thrive, MC feels helpless 
Ludhiana, June 1
A makeshift vegetable market on the encroached portion of the road at ward number 17 in Ludhiana. It seems that the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation is helpless in controlling the menace of temporary encroachments in Janakpuri. A few ‘rehri’ owners, most of whom are vegetable vendors, operate by stationing these in the middle of the road. The municipal officials are aware of this menace, but it seems that they are either not bothered or are not interested in clearing the temporary encroachments.

State BJP chief warns dissidents

President of the state unit of the BJP Ashwani Sharma has expelled a dissident BJP candidate Jasveer Singh Jassa, who is adamant that he would contest election from ward number 40 against BJP candidate Devi Sahay Tandon, from the party for six years.

Gang of yarn thieves in police custody

The CIA-II police has claimed to have busted a gang of yarn thieves that had created panic among hosiery traders with its repeated strikes, with the arrest of six persons.

Gang of robbers busted
Jagraon, June 1
The members of the robbers’ gang being produced in the court at Jagraon on Friday. The local police has busted a gang of robbers with the arrest of three of its members. Those arrested have been identified as Kuldeep Singh, Nirmal Singh and Sukhwinder Singh, all residents of Samalsar village near Baghapurana. The police has also recovered Rs 24,000 cash and a Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle (PB 65 A 8115) from their possession.

Pickpockets arrested
Ludhiana, June 1
Two pickpockets were nabbed by residents during a chabeel at Gill road today. This incident took place today afternoon when the duo mingled in the crowd and started stealing money from the pockets of those who stopped to drink sweetened water.
