A jilted lover repeatedly stabbed a 22-year-old girl at her house in Baterla village, Sector 41, here this afternoon. Sonia was rushed and admitted to the PGI in a critical condition.

No let-up in heatwave

Even though the mercury has declines by about one notch, there is hardly any relief for the residents from the severe heatwave which has been lashing the tricity region for the past couple of days.

Complaints of low water pressure flood MC centre
Chandigarh, June 1
In the last two days, the municipal corporation has received 83 water complaints at the centre, which is set up by the authorities especially to deal with water-related complaints. The records of the corporation revealed that the complaints received from sectors, including 7, 11, 15, 38, 40, 44 and 46, are about low pressure of water supply due to which overhead tanks in the respective areas are not filled.

MCM-11, DAV-10 begin admissions

Students having a look at the MCM College prospectus on Friday. The race to city colleges has begun for the students with a few colleges already starting the admission process. The sale of prospectus and forms of MCM College, Sector 11, has already begun. Forms for admission to DAV College, Sector 10, are available online and the prospectus would be released soon. The government colleges that have a joint prospectus are yet to release it.

Following directives of the CBI, the UT education department has started retrieving and submitting the application forms of absentees and non-qualified candidates of 2009 teacher recruitment to the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC).

PU students excel in GPAT
Chandigarh, June 1
Proving their mettle once again, students of Panjab University's Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS) have performed brilliantly in the Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test-2012 (GPAT), managing to secure five positions in the top 100. Around 40, 000 students from across the country had appeared in the test. The UIPS students bagged all India ranks 14, 19, 20, 28 and 82.

High security number plates to be installed

High security number plates will be installed on all the vehicles in the district as per the directions of Supreme Court and the campaign has been started from today onwards, all old and new vehicles will be covered under this scheme, said Yashvir Mahajan, Deputy Commissioner, while inaugurating the new project by installing number plate on a vehicle here today.

209 examined during free medical camp
Dera Bassi, June 1
A free medical and immunisation awareness camp was organised at Sri Sukhmani Multispeciality Hospital in association with Sri Sukmani Dental College, Dera Bassi. The camp was organised by a team of doctors under the supervision of Dr SS Rana (MS, orthopedics) and Dr SS Walia (MD, medicine). The medical camp included free checkups for bone mineral density, asthma, and dental problems.

An unidentified pedestrian was killed in a road accident here on Friday morning near Dera Bassi on the Ambala-Chandigarh national highway. The deceased could not be identified and seems around 35 years old.

Problems of school dropouts discussed

Universal Group of Institutions, Lalru, held a seminar on June 1 at the college campus to discuss the problems of school dropouts. Village heads and sarpanchs of 109 villages and approximately 105 principals of schools in Lalru and nearby areas attended the seminar and shared their views.

Notices issued on transfer of SHOs
Chandigarh, June 1
The Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, comprising Acting Chief Justice MM Kumar and Justice Alok Singh, today issued notices for August 22 to the states of Punjab and Haryana and its DGPs, on a PIL for action against SSPs ordering indiscriminate transfers of SHOs before completion of their tenure.

Nirmal Yadav case adjourned

Hearing of the Justice (retd) Nirmal Yadav bribery case, today adjourned to July 14. The hearing of the case was adjourned following the Supreme Court directions to adjourn the case for at least three weeks since the special leave petition of Justice (retd) Nirmal Yadav is pending before the Supreme Court.
