Ensure safety of witnesses, IGP tells SHOs
Jhajjar, May 21 The district police chiefs have been directed to appoint any gazetted officer of their area concerned as nodal officer to ensure safety and security of witnesses, especially during deposition process. Alok Mittal, IGP of the Rohtak Range covering Rohtak, Jhajjar, Sonepat and Panipat districts, said the directives had been issued in view of some recent incidents wherein key witnesses were murdered by their rival groups when they were going to court for giving their deposition statements. “The SHOs of those police stations will now be responsible for dereliction in duty if any incident of assault on witnesses takes place under their jurisdiction. They have also been directed to carry out a regular review regarding security arrangements of witnesses of those criminal cases which are the outcome of personal enmity or gang wars,” said Mittal. The police has also decided to make sufficient numbers of security personnel available for those witnesses who receive threat of dire consequences from their opposite group to depose before the courts, said the IGP. He said the SHOs had also been directed to keep a close tab on the activities of those accused of heinous crimes who were out from prison either on bail or parole. Mittal said the DSPs had also been asked to hold special meetings with SHOs concerned at regular intervals to evaluate security and safety of witnesses of their area concerned. Notably, a sharp rise in the incidents of lethal attack on witnesses has been reported in the state during the past some time. In a recent incident occurred in Panipat on April 27, Kuldeep Singh, a key witness in a murder case and a former sarpanch of Nara village, and his security

Haryanavis prone to contracting heart diseases, says expert
Fatehabad, May 21 Dr Gurcharan Singh Kalra, Director, Cardiology, in Fortis, Mohali, said Punjabis ate heavily while they had a sedentary life style. Dr Kalra, who was here today to examine patients in a Cardiac Diseases Camp organised by Punjabi Sabha Hospital today, said eating more and working less coupled with genetic reasons make Punjabis susceptible to cardiac diseases. He said in Haryana, too, the lifestyle and eating habits of people were much like Punjab with the added problem that people smoke a lot in this state. He said he had observed during his practice that even women smoke a lot in Haryana. Further, the prevalence of diabetes is more common in Haryana, Punjab and other parts of the northern belt, aggravating the situation
more. “Over 45 per cent of diabetic patients have been found to be suffering from heart diseases, too,” said Dr Kalra. Describing cardiac diseases as the commonest cause of deaths in India, particularly in the northern region, the noted cardiologist said the prevalence of heart diseases cuts across societal and economic status barriers in the region due to genetic reasons. He said it was important to keep high blood pressure under check, keep the body weight within normal limits and control cholesterol levels at a younger age. Dr Kalra said too much of milk was not good for the health; one teaspoonful of desi ghee per day was fine while vegetables and fruits were the best food. |
