4 kids hurt in lathi charge
Sirsa, May 21 The villagers, who are demanding that their school be upgraded from the matriculation to senior secondary level, locked the school building in the morning and sat on dharna. Later, they blocked traffic on the Sirsa-Bhadra road and demanded that education department officers come to the village and accept their demand. The villagers alleged that nearly 100 policemen led by Ravi Khundia, SHO of the Chopta police station, lathicharged villagers sitting on dharna and blocking the road. Four schoolchildren and a villager were injured in the police action. A child, Rohit, was rushed to General Hospital in Sirsa with serious injuries while the others were treated in the village. Angered at the use of force by the police, the villagers went on the rampage, pelted stones on policemen and torched three government vehicles and a private Alto car, allegedly used by the SHO, Ravi Khundia. The government vehicles burnt by the villagers include the tehsildar’s official vehicle, District Education Officer Kum Kum Grover’s vehicle and a Swaraj Mazda vehicle of the police. Some policemen took shelter in nearby houses and escaped from the village without their uniforms. Demanding the registration of a criminal case against the policemen responsible for the lathi charge on children demanding better education facilities, INLD MLA from Ellenabad Abhey Singh Chautala alleged that the police had violated human rights by committing atrocities on schoolchildren and villagers. The SP, Devender Singh Yadav, the SDM of Sirsa, Munish Nagpal, and City Magistrate Satish Kumar rushed to the village to defuse the situation. They were holding parleys with a group of villagers. Efforts made to contact Yadav and other officers did not yield any success. |

School bus rams into tree, kids hurt
Ratia, May 21 The 30-seater bus belonging to Mother India Convent School, Ratia, was reportedly carrying nearly 50 schoolchildren and going to Sardarewala, Ladhuwas, Nagla and Lathera villages to drop them after the school time today. The bus driver did not care to slow down the vehicle near Rattangarh on a road, which was under construction and stones were scattered over it. The bus hit a tractor and then rammed into a tree on the roadside. The bus driver, Manga Singh, jumped out and escaped from the scene after the accident. Panicked children cried for help, but there was none to rescue them. There was no help from the school authorities either. Parents rushed to the accident site after learning about the incident and took frightened children to their homes as most of them had minor injuries and bruises. Three children, Kartik, Riya and Heena, had to be rushed to the General Hospital due to their injuries. Naveen, the driver of the tractor that was hit by the school bus, was also rushed to hospital for treatment. The incident has exposed the violation of rules by the school authorities, negating claims of strict measures taken by the district authorities. The violation of rules can be gauged from the fact that a 13-year-old illiterate boy, Krishan, was accompanying the children as conductor with the school bus. While the driver escaped from the scene, the conductor, being a child, panicked after the accident and could not provide any first aid to children. |

Sources said the committee would meet early next month to finalise the chairman and two members of the commission. However, following an uproar in the wake of large-scale human rights violations, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was forced to announce the formation of the Human Rights Commission in the state in 2010.
