Jalandhar, May 13
Akali workers allegedly manhandled Malerkotla Nagar Council president Mohammad Sardar Dara in the presence of Local Bodies Minister Bhagat Chunni Lal during a state-level function at Red Cross Bhawan here on Sunday.

The trouble started when Chunni Lal handed over a cheque of Rs 12.60 crores to Akali MLA Farzana Alam instead of Dara at the function. Dara from the Congress took a strong exception of not being handed over the cheque. When he started protesting right in front of the dais, several Akali workers manhandled him and took him out of the venue

He said, “The cheque should have been handed over to me as was done in the case of BJP and Akali mayors of Municipal Corporations and the presidents of different Nagar Councils.” Dara alleged that the cheque had been given to the Akali MLA so that she could draw political mileage. “This is against the set democratic norms and a blot on the democracy,” he added.

Later, he also submitted a complaint against the Akali workers at Police Division number four.

Meanwhile, Bhagat Chunni Lal distributed cheques worth Rs 410 crore to the five municipal corporations of Jalandhar, Amritsar, Bathinda, Ludhiana and Patiala and 45 nagar councils of the state.

Former Local Bodies Minister Manoranjan Kalia, Chief Parliamentary Secretary Som Prakash and Local Bodies Director AK Sinha were present on the occasion.
