Jalandhar, May 7
Acting strict against the authorities of Bist Doab Canal distributary, Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner SR Ladher today directed Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti to ensure the participation of the departments concerned to clean the water body. Ladher directed officials of the Irrigation and Drainage Department, the Municipal Corporation, the Punjab Pollution Control Board and local NGOs to be present at a meeting to be convened on May 11.

The orders came following the intervention of environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal. Seechewal had taken cognisance of the report ‘Canal distributary or garbage dump’ published in these columns on April 14.

Following the decision of Seechewal to make it a massive campaign, Ladher, too, expressed concern over the worsening condition of the canal distributary.

Apart from the cleanliness drive, Seechewal has announced to launch a plantation drive on either side of the distributary. “Baba Seechewal has asked for earth moving machines from the MC . The campaign is not just confined to cleaning the distributary, but will also involve local residents to keep it clean,” said a volunteer associated with Seechewal.
