Bio-remediation project by weekend

Having stayed only on paper for over a year, the Bio-remediation project to clean Budha Nullah is all set to start by the weekend.

20-yr-old woman ends life

Kusum, a 20-year-old woman, a resident of 42-E, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar here, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling last night "as her husband had failed to provide her a new lipstick".

A youth in his twenties was killed when an Enfield motorcycle he was riding on smashed into a building near Halwara village at the Ludhiana-Raikot road late last night. The deceased has been identified as Hardeep Singh, a resident of Umarpura village near Raikot.

Ludhiana, May 7
Finally, the Civil Surgeon office will be shifted to a safe building. Punjab Health Minister Madan Mohan Mittal announced this today during his visit to the city. s He said the office wiould be shifted to the Civil Hospital premises.

PWD minister writes to NHAI head
Ludhiana, May 7
Taking a serious note of five people losing their lives in an accident which took place due to potholes near Jagraon yesterday, state PWD minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon has shot a letter to Chairman, National Highways Authority of India. The PWD minister said the Ludhiana-Talwandi Road, where this accident took place, was handed over to the NHAI for upgradation to four-lane last year and the contract was handed over in January 2011, but the work had started yesterday and that also after this accident.

Arms dealers face government’s apathy

In the recently issued directions, though the state government has asked all District Magistrates and Police Commissioners to renew licences of arms dealers within 15 days, ironically major lapse lies with the department of home, law and justice II where documents gather dust for months together. And the arms dealers suffer unnecessary harassment due to the “callous” attitude of the government.

The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation went into a cleanliness overdrive ahead of the BJP national president Nitin Gadkari’s visit to the city today. Work to clean all the roads, which Gadkari was to pass, started last evening. At some roads, the MC staff was seen engaged in cleaning in the morning as well.

‘Constitute awareness clubs in schools’
Ludhiana, May 7
To make students aware about ill effects of drugs on health, the education department of the state has directed the schools to constitute an awareness club in the schools. The department asked the government schools to constitute these clubs by May 31. The awareness club would be constituted in government senior secondary and primary schools of the state.

3.57% migrated to cities in last 10 yrs
Ludhiana, May 7
Due to the fast growth and development in the cities and many other opportunities available, 3.57 per cent of the rural population (about 10 lakh people) has been migrated to the cities in the last 10 years in Punjab. The data available with the rural development department show Mohali city had attracted maximum villagers, followed by Bathinda, Jalandhar and Ludhiana cities. The rural population has been attracted towards these cities due to the vast development, better employment opportunities and avenues.

Jewellers heave a sigh of relief
Ludhiana, May 7
Jewellers in the city were in a jubilant mood after the Finance Minister announced a rollback of the budgetary proposal of levying excise duty on unbranded jewellery and consumer tax. Buckled under severe pressure, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announced a rollback of the excise duty not only on unbranded but on branded jewellery as well. Before the budget, jewellers dealing in branded jewellery were paying excise duty.

Lopsided development in ward number 5

Despite all the efforts made by sitting councillor Tarsem Singh Bhinder to develop ward no. 5, the residents of four colonies of the area have complained that these lack the basic facilities.  According to the residents of the well-maintained areas of the ward, the former councillor did a lot of development in their area so Bhinder did not need to do much.

Ward number 6 seems alien to development
Ludhiana, May 7
Ward no. 6 seems alien to development. The only place that seems to be a veneer of cleanliness is the road near the councillor's residence in the ward. Move around, and you come across shoddiness in many areas of the ward.

Industrialists meet Gadkari

The representatives of the local industry today met Nitin Gatkari, national president of the BJP, who was on a visit to the city. Discussing the problems with Gadkari, the representatives said be it the Centre or the state government, both are forming anti-industry policies.

TT tourney from May 11
Ludhiana, May 7
To promote the game of table tennis in this part of the state, the Varinder Cultural Society, in association with a sports promoter unit, Maverick, will be organising an Open Table Tennis Tournament in the memory of Punjabi film star, Varinder, on the Punjab Agricultural University campus from May 11 to 13.
