3 traders held in China
Ludhiana, April 28 The information gathered from industrialists, who are part of the delegation, has sent shock waves in the cycle parts industry of the city. The industrials, including one from Turkey, one from Delhi and three from the city were detained by the Chinese police at around 2:30 am on April 26 following a complaint lodged by the woman. The Chinese police further checked the footage of close circuit television cameras (CCTVs) installed on the premises of a hotel to cross check the woman’s claim. The police took the industrialists into custody while they were sitting in their hotel rooms. Sources said they were arrested following a brawl at a massage centre. However, the family of the industrialists has blatantly denied the allegations levelled by the woman and claimed that the rival businessmen were concocting stories to defame them. In the backdrop of the incident, which has rocked the entire cycle industry of the city, the United Cycle Parts Association conducted emergency meeting to discuss the issue. The meeting was chaired by MS Khalsa, chairman of the United Cycle Parts Association. He added that as per information provided by Gurmeet Singh, president of the association, the trio had been remanded in 10 day police custody. Senior executive member of UCPA confirmed that president Gurmeet Singh spoke to him and briefed about incident. Members of the association said they would take a report from the delegation once they return from China and the membership of the industrialist would be canceled if he was found guilty. |

MC Commissioner proposes, contractor refuses
Ludhiana, April 28 The underpass will be thrown open for public in the next a few days. The foundation stone of this Rs 3.5 crore project was laid by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in November 2010 and municipal officials were expecting it to complete by November 30, 2011. But due to incessant rains in August 2011, the work on project remained stalled for a few weeks. Jaggi, who visited the spot today afternoon, said he wants to develop it as a model for others to follow. “Although the underpass is ready, but when I looked at the ceiling, it gave a very shabby look. It was
then that I decided that the contractor should install a false ceiling to beautify it. We are ready to wait for another 10 days because we know that in the end, the project would look nice,” claimed Jaggi, who said the cost of false ceiling, which would be around Rs 2.5 lakh, would be borne by the contractor himself. When contacted, the contractor refused to install the false ceiling. “We have readied the underpass and will be handing it over to the corporation on Monday. If it wants to install a false ceiling, it can float fresh tenders for the same and maybe then we can think on it. Moreover, if Jaggi wanted us to install false ceiling, he should have told us in advance ,” said the contractor. There was financial crisis in the civic body when almost 90 per cent of the work was completed. The contractor was not paid Rs 50 lakh on time. Due to which, the contractor stopped working and the project got delayed further. The contractor has installed fiber glass sheds on both sides of the underpass out of his own pocket. |

Labs still dysfunctional
Ludhiana, April 28 The department had set up Edusat laboratories in the government schools to uplift education standards and make the students tech-savvy. Earlier, the department had installed Edusat single screens system, where students get lectures live. After those Edusat laboratories, the department has installed laboratories with 24 LED systems. In these laboratories, the students can access Edusat systems individually and prepare for those lectures, which they missed in the main session. The department has started installation work in December at Government Senior Secondary School, PAU. Now, all hardware is installed but the lab is not functional due to some technical reasons. Principal Sanjiv Thapar, Government Senior Secondary School, PAU, said, “New Edusat laboratory is not yet functional because it was not installed properly. Replace obsolete computers, say teachers
Ludhiana, April 28 The ICT project was introduced in 2006 to provide computer education to the students of the government schools from class VI to XII. The government had provided computers to all the government schools of the state in three phases. A private computer-manufacturing company has been taking care of maintenance and providing other required service for these computers under this project. Most of the computer teachers of the government schools in urban areas are satisfied with the service of the company but some teachers complain of frequent breakdown of computers. A computer teacher from Government Senior Secondary School, PAU, said: "Sometimes it depends on workload. Our school is running in two shifts so the computers are used the whole day. Though the company is taking proper care of the computers, the performance of the hardware is not satisfactory". "It is common that after six years hardware cannot work properly. We hardly face problems with the configuration and software. But hardware failure is a routine thing. The government should replace the systems," said another computer teacher from the local government school. Jasbeer Singh, District Project Coordinator, ICT, said: "The department has hired a company for the maintenance of the computers, and we have seven engineers who take care of complaints. We are aware that the computers need to be replaced. It is a state-level project. Only the head office can take any decision on it,” he said. |
Debate on remarriage
Ludhiana, April 28 Dr Harmeet was in the city to participate in a debate on the issue of remarriage. Sunita Arora, a sociologist, said the increasing number of divorces is a cause of concern, as complications for children, individuals and thus society are growing. The number of divorce cases is increasing because of increasing financial independence of women and nuclear families. Couples seeking divorce should seek counselling before divorce, because many times, these just turn out to be ego issues or differences created by families, she said. Issues can be sorted out. But if there is a complete mismatch, there is no point sticking in the bad marriage, she said. According to Ravindran Sharma, president of Adhar Foundation, life for women divorcees or widows becomes difficult. According to PL Ahuja, a resident, women become enemies of women when it comes to divorces in families. There should be life and a chance to live a new life in case the marriage doesn’t last. Religious organisations can play an important role in helping remove this taboo attached to remarriage, said Ahuja. |
