Aamir Khan to discuss plight of deserted NRI wives
Jalandhar, May 8 Bollywood actor Aamir Khan will be discussing the sensitive issue on his new show on the small screen - Satyamev Jayte. Aamir interviewed Paramjit Kaur of Nawanshahr whose Australia-based NRI husband reportedly deserted her a week after her marriage. She was invited to Mumbai for the episode. Aamir Khan also invited the Regional Passport Officer (RPO), Jalandhar, Perneet Singh to Mumbai for an interview, highlighting his role in launching a massive campaign to save ‘holiday wives’ from the shackles of sham marriages. Talking to The Tribune, Perneet Singh said it was a 10-minute interaction in which he answered the queries of Aamir Khan, hence highlighting the process and the impact of impounding passports of such grooms settled abroad under Section 10(3b) and 10 (3h) of the Passport Act, 1967. “After going through stories of ‘holiday wives’ in newspapers, Aamir’s production team contacted me for the episode in March. Through this episode, it was highlighted how women in different parts of Doaba belt, including Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur and Nawanshahr, were being exploited by NRI grooms on the pretext of marriage,” he said. The Regional Passport Officer said he had launched a special ‘Women Grievances Cell’ to readdress such cases of sham marriages. “It was a pleasure to see Aamir lauding my efforts of having solved the cases of as many as 30 such women and impounding 84 passports of NRIs since last year,” he added. Aamir also interviewed Akali leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia for his untiring efforts in taking up the issue of ‘holiday wives’ with the state and the Centre governments. |
