75-yr-old woman rescued
Had been locked in a room of a house for four days
Ludhiana, May 8
In a shocking incident, a 75-year-old woman, suspected to have been thrashed, was rescued from the room in a house where she had been locked for four days. Naseeb Kaur, a resident of White Quarter near Abdullapur Basti, was rushed to the DMC Hospital in a serious condition.

Vacation plans go awry as long route trains choked to capacity
Ludhiana, May 8
With most of the long-haul trains on trunk routes choked to capacity, vacation plans of city residents as well those of a sizeable section of migrant labour, intending to visit their native places during the summer break in the schools, have gone sour. Railway reservation not being available in any class even a month or a month and a half in advance, those having travel plans till mid-June are perplexed as no alternative travel modes other than railways are available for such long journeys.

15-yr-old dies in freak accident
Ludhiana, May 8
In a freak incident, a 15-year-old boy died after he fell from a staircase and a scissor lying on the floor pierced his heart here this evening. The incident took place when Deepak Kumar, a class VIII student, was playing with his friends on the rooftop in Guru Arjan Dev Nagar near Samrala Chowk.

16-year-old suffers eye injury

A petty quarrel with a classmate proved costly for 16-year- old Gagandeep Singh, who has suffered partial blindness. Gagandeep's classmate had attacked him with a compass following a quarrel at a school here on May 3.

Thieves strike twice, 1 nabbed

Striking in a house for the second time proved costly for the thieves, as one of them was nabbed by an NRI resident and his friend at New Sarabha Nagar on the Pakhowal Road here today.

Stray dog menace at Doraha
Doraha, May 8
A group of stray dogs is a common sight in Doraha. The stray dog menace has literally taken the town in its stride. The stray dogs have become a nuisance for residents of the town. “We are nowhere safe. The moment we step out of our homes, the stray dogs standing in the streets give us an ignoble welcome. Children are the worst sufferers, as they fail to get rid of them by just shooing them away,” expressed Arun Bector, a resident of the town.

Ward number 7 presents a picture of neglect
Ludhiana, May 8
A view of the market, the shops of which have not been allotted to shopkeepers Ward no. 7 is an evidence of neglect by the civic body and ward councillor Mandeep Kaur Sandhu. Most of the areas of the ward are deprived of basic amenities like clean potable water supply, sanitation and sewerage. Some of the areas have been turned into roadside dumping grounds while streets and all vacant places are filled with garbage. Stagnant water on the streets and uncarpeted roads make life of the residents worse.

Basic amenities non-existent at ward number 8

Slush on the Tibba Road at ward no. 8 of the Municipal Corporation in Ludhiana. While development work is on in some of the colonies of ward no. 8, a large part of it is deprived of even basic civic amenities. Entering the ward from the GT Road, the area seems somewhat developed, but beyond Guru Gobind Singh Nagar, the pathetic condition of the colonies speaks volumes of the negligence on the part of the authorities.

Industrial State Level Advisory Board formed
Ludhiana, May 8
The Industrial State Level Advisory Board has been notified by the Governor of Punjab. The main aim behind forming the board is the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME).

A team of the PWD officials led by an XEN, Ropar circle, Karnail Singh, and the SDO Kirpal Singh swung into action to remove illegal constructions on Ludhiana-Chandigarh road at Khant, Pohlo Majra and Sanghol villages. The officials reached near Bus Stand Sanghol with a JCB in the morning at 9.30 am and other concerned officials also reached with the police force.

Police to crack whip against tipplers
Ludhiana, May 8
Tipplers, who were enjoying till now Patiala pegs while sitting in their vehicles outside eateries located on Pakhowal road, would have to relocate a safe heaven as the police has decided to crack it whip on boozers.

Income Tax officials on lunch strike at their office in Ludhiana on Tuesday. Income tax officials at their office at Rishi Nagar held a lunch hour demonstration here today. The officials were protesting against their long pending demands and said that they had asked the director of central board of direct taxes to give them time so that their problems could be discussed thoroughly.

The students of Government College for Women submitted a memorandum to the Additional Deputy Commissioner to stop the acquisition of the sports ground of the college for widening the road.

Ludhiana, May 8
In a major breakthrough, the Division No 4 police nabbed notorious criminal, Vicky Mahant, who was at large in a rape case. The accused, who was arrested from Joshi Nagar in Haibowal along with a stolen motorcycle, was also wanted in several snatching incidents.

Man attacked with weapons
Mandi Gobindgarh, May 8
Yadvinder Singh, a resident of Sanaur district, Patiala, had a narrow escape when over 18 assailants armed with sharp edged weapons attacked him.

Theft at factory unit
Ludhiana, May 8
There seem to be no stopping of the theft incidents at Focal Point and Sahnewal area. In a latest case, thieves struck at a factory unit at Sahnewal and decamped with scrap material and forging tools worth Rs 3 lakhs.

Trials to select probables for the state handball team (sub junior girls) will be conducted at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Punjab Agricultural University campus, here at 10 am on May 11, according to Balkar Singh Brar, honorary general secretary, Punjab Handball Association.
