3 die as car rams into tree
Shahkot, May 10 The deceased were identified as Ranjit Singh, his aunt Balbir Kaur (residents of Purana Moga) and
car driver Jaspal Singh of Sohnewala village in Muktsar. The condition of Ranjit's wife Sarabjit Kaur and sister Babli was said to be serious. They are admitted to the trauma ward of the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar. The injured said the accident took place as the car driver lost control over the wheels while trying to escape a collision with a motorcycle. Initially, the injured were rushed to the Shahkot Civil Hospital from where they were taken to the Nakodar Civil Hospital. As all of them were in serious state, doctors again referred them to Jalandhar, where two victims succumbed to injuries. The car driver succumbed to the injuries while on the way to the hospital. Sources said occupants were heading to Amritsar for a medical checkup. |

Hoshiarpur, May 10 Police sources said all the injured persons (five travelling in a car and two in the bus) were admitted to the local Civil Hospital.

Tarn Taran, May 10 The Goindwal Sahib police has registered a case under Sections 307, 148 and 149 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act. The accused include Sabbi and his two sons. The owner of the marriage palace too has been named in the FIR for his negligent attitude. SHO Naurang Singh said the injured have been identified as Roppa of Maqbalpura (Amritsar) and Raj Kumar of Gurbax Nagar locality of Amritsar besides Arjun of Rajasansi. The injured woman was yet to be identified. |

Army exercise enters culminating phase
Jalandhar, May 10 The exercise has seen combined efforts of various formations of the corps and that of the Western Air Command (WAC) with major thrust on synergy between the two forces in a near war-like situation. Exercise ‘Rudra Aakrosh’ started last month in parts of the central Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir and was aimed at testing the battlefield preparedness of the forces and effectiveness of the formations to deal in combat zones. Around 20,000 troops took part in the exercise, in which soldiers practiced battle tactics with major infantry, mechanised infantry, tanks, artillery, heliborne troops and surveillance equipment. Unmanned aerial vehicles, fighter aircraft and helicopters of the WAC were seen practicing the concept of ‘man behind the machine’ along with the latest weaponry of the Army. “The corps has been playing the additional role of guarding this stretch in conjunction with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI)”, sources said. Earlier, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Western Command, Lt Gen SR Ghosh along with many senior officers witnessed the operational preparedness of the forces in the exercise. |
