Hyderabad, May 10 Playing only in his second match this season, Warner smashed 10 fours and seven sixes in his explosive knock to help Delhi chase down a stiff target of 188 with 20 balls to spare at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium at Uppal here. The Australian dynamo shared a massive 189-run partnership for the unbroken second wicket with Naman Ojha (64 not out) as the duo sent the Deccan bowlers on a leatherhunt. Ojha turned out to be the ideal ally for Warner as he rotated the strike with his partner initially by scoring in singles before hitting some lusty blows later in his 46-ball knock, which was studded with two fours and five sixes. With the win today, Delhi once again jumped to the top of the table and are virtually assured of a play-off berth with 18 points from 12 matches. Warner was on song from the beginning and he was the one who took on the bowlers initially. He hit TP Sudhindra for a four and a six in the fourth over and followed that up with two sixes and as many fours off Ashish Reddy in the sixth to take Delhi to 64 for one at the end of first powerplay. He completed his sixth IPL half century with a single to the off side off Manpreet Gony. The run riot continued with Ojha joining in with two consecutive sixes off Shikhar Dhawan. Delhi were well-placed at the halfway stage at 112 for one, with the asking rate below eight an over. There was no stopping the Warner-Ojha duo as they rained in fours and sixes and by the 14th over, the asking rate was down to below six an over. Warner brought up his century in style — his second in the IPL — by lifting Ankit Sharma for a six off the 52nd ball he faced. Delhi though did not have a good start as their skipper and dangerman Virender Sehwag was out for just four in the second ball of the innings of the bowling of Shikhar Dhawan. Sehwag was in his belligerent mood as he greeted Dhawan with a four in the first ball of the innings but this was not to be his day as he perished next ball while attempting for another big hit, with Cameron White effecting a fine diving catch at long-on region. — PTI SCOREBOARD Delhi Daredevils |
Pune, May 10 After their crushing nine-wicket win over Mumbai Indians, Bangalore are placed fourth in the table while Warriors are languishing at number eight. It will be a big challenge for Warriors to arrest their slide as they are coming into the clash with six straight defeats. They have failed to fire as a unit as their batting has flopped and bowlers too have not made the desired impact. Nothing has worked for the hosts. Neither the inclusion of Australian skipper Michael Clarke nor the change in batting order. All their efforts have been fruitless as the league has progressed. Bangalore too have their own problems, but they have in their ranks a game-changer in Chris Gayle, who has made a significant contribution in keeping his side in play-off contention. His whirlwind batting shifts the momentum in his side's favour at any given point of time. Then they have AB de Villiers, who on his day is a match-winner and stand-in captain Virat Kohli, who is gradually getting into the groove. It is not not known if regular skipper Daniel Vettori would return for tomorrow's clash. And if he does so, the team will have a headache to exclude one foreign recruit. Tillekaratne Dilshan did well yesterday along with Gayle and Muttiah Muralitharan too has done well after being inducted into the side again. But if either of the two will have to make the way for the captain if he returns. — PTI |
Ancient Olympia, May 10 Dignitaries at the ceremony included the president of the International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge, as well as the head of the London organising committee, Sebastian Coe. "We promise to protect the flame, to cherish its traditions and stage an uplifting torch relay of which we can be proud," Coe said in a speech, vowing the event would "lift the spirits and hopes of people across Britain and across the world". After thanks to the god Apollo, "king of the sun and the idea of light", in the shadow of the Greek, British and Olympic flags, the flame was handed to the first relay runner, Greece's Liverpool-born open water swimming champion Spyros Gianniotis. He then passed it to 19-year-old British boxer Alexander
Loukos, whose father hails from the Greek island of Lesbos and grew up in the east London borough where the Olympic Stadium is situated. Gianniotis said after the full rehearsal at the temple on Wednesday that the torch ceremony was "a very big moment" for him. —

IOA opposes government move to postpone South Asian Games
New Delhi, May 10 “There are a number of factors which preclude the possibility of hosting the Games before the second half of 2014. It would not be possible to hold the games during 2012 as it is the year of the Olympic Games. Thereafter, in 2013, due to elections to the Delhi Assembly, the Model Code of Conduct would come into force and hence there may be administrative difficulties in holding the Games in 2013 in Delhi. Incidentally, the year 2014 also happens to be the year of General Elections to the Lok Sabha. As such, India would be in a position to hold the Games only after the (Parliamentary) elections are held, i..e the second half of 2014”, the Sports Ministry’s letter stated. But the IOA would have none of it, as it wants to stick to the original schedule. Otherwise, the SAG rotation cycle will be disturbed. The IOA has reacted strongly to the Government suggestion, noting that any abdication of responsibility to host the Games at this stage, will be a “standing shame” for the country. “The reasons advanced by the Sports Ministry to defer the Games for another year and a half are laughable”, IOA acting president Vijay Kumar Malhotra said here today. He said the IOA had not made any bid for these Games, but were committed to conduct them, as per the rotational allotment. “This is part of the SAG charter that every member country has to conduct the Games as per rotation”, he said. Malhotra said the IOA had scheduled the Games for January/February 2013 so that the games could be held much before the Delhi Assembly elections, which will be due only in September/October, and there would arise no question of the violation of the Model Code of Conduct. Malhotra asserted that it was the Government, which was putting pressure on the IOA about hosting these Games, as since the middle of 2010, several meetings were held by the Sports Ministry officials with regard to the conduct of the Games. The Sports Ministry had even set up a high-powered committee, which had sought feedback from the IOA about these events and, which were duly provided to them. He said the Delhi Government was very keen to hold the Games in the Capital but the letter from the Sports Ministry has created confusion and uncertainty. Malhotra said Delhi was chosen as the venue to host the SAG since the infrastructure to host the Games were in place, and no additional construction of stadia or other infrastructure, were necessary. Therefore, only minimal expenditure would be required to host the Games. “I had written to the Prime Minister after he returned from the SAAARC meeting in Maldives late last year about these games”, Malhotra explained. And the Prime Minister’s Office, in response, had suggested that the IOA should hold meetings with the Delhi Government and the Sports Ministry and then comes back to the PMO. Malhotra said he was surprised at the “sudden U-turn” taken by the Sports Ministry. “Because deferring the Games till 2014 is neither feasible nor possible. I urge the Delhi Government to take up this matter with the Union Government”, the IOA chief suggested. “The Games can be held at a minimal cost. Bangladesh spent around Rs 80 crores on the Games and it should cost us much less because we don’t have to spend any thing on the stadia. There is a huge infrastructure already in place in the Capital, constructed for the Commonwealth Games.” Malhotra said the IOA had already made it clear that for the conduct of SAG, it will like the Government to deal with the financial aspect. “We want the Government agencies to handle the total expenditure of the Games. TV rights, sponsorships, and advertisements can generate surplus revenue. The Delhi government can take charge of opening and closing ceremonies. The IOA will also like some senior union minister to be the chairman of the Organizing Committee”, he added. He said this matter will be discussed in the General Body Meeting of the IOA this month. “We will explore all avenues and try to hold the Games here but will also keep our options open. We will also discuss alternative venues for hosting the Games in the country”. He said the IOA will also consult the National Olympic Committees of SAG before arriving at a final decision-for or against. |

Despite her defeat, India’s chief coach Bhawani Mukherjee is delighted with the performance of the Indian squad. Talking to The Tribune over phone from Doha, Mukherjee said though Shamini lost the match, she was glad that she fought brilliantly and gave a tough fight to Gabriala who enjoys much better world ranking. “Even while playing against better-ranked players, Indian players did not play like underdogs and the end result was quite fruitful. Though, it would be too early to say anything but I am sure that if they continue to play the way they did today, we will certainly have couple of more paddlers going to London Olympics this year,” he added. |

Albie, Anirudha win it for Super Kings Jaipur, May 10 Set a modest 127 to win in a rain-interrupted game, the Chennai top order never really looked at ease and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. It was down to some lusty hitting by Albie Morkel and Anirudha Srikkanth to help their team register a four wicket win. Both Srikanth and Morkel hit 18 off just six balls each to get the points for Chennai. But it was an erratic penultimate over by Shaun Tait that cost his team very dearly. After being hit for a six by Srikanth, Tait bowled him, but it was ruled a no-ball. The following delivery, which was a free-hit, was sent firing way down the leg-side and wrapped up the game in favour of CSK. Earlier, title holders Chennai Super Kings produced a disciplined bowling performance to restrict Rajasthan Royals to 126 for six. Sent into bat, Ben Hilfenhaus (2/8) produced a stunning opening spell to dent Rajasthan's prospects at the start. Hilfenhaus scalped two vital wickets of Rajasthan skipper Rahul Dravid and Shane Watson early during his breathtaking opening spell of four overs which yielded just eight runs. Dravid was Hilfenhaus' first victim as he fell in the second over, top-edging one to Michael Hussey at mid-off. Hilfenhaus then accounted for dangerman Shane Watson cheaply three overs later to derail Rajasthan's innings which was marred by three brief rain interruptions at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Watson was brilliantly caught by a diving Ravichandran Ashwin at the third-man boundary as the batsman went for a huge heave over square-leg only to get a leading edge. In-form Ajinkya Rahane (17) too perished soon in search of quick runs, again caught by Ashwin off Yo Mahesh (2/21) as Rajasthan slipped to 43 for three in the ninth over. — Agencies SCOREBOARD Chennai Super Kings |
