Smith wins it for Mumbai
Hits a six and two fours off the last 3 balls

Mumbai, May 6
Dwayne Smith emerged as an unlikely hero for Mumbai Indians as he smashed a six and two fours off the last three balls to secure a sensational two-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in their Indian Premier League match here today.

Chasing 174, Mumbai needed 16 runs off the last over, bowled by pacer Bel Hilfenhaus, and equation became 14 off the last three balls as the Australian castled Lasith Malinga off the second ball and conceded one run in the next ball.

Smith hit a towering six over long-on in the fourth ball and reeled off two consecutive fours to snatch the win for the hosts in a match, in which fortunes fluctuated like a pendulum.

Sachin Tendulkar (74) slammed his first half-century of the season and shared a 126-run stand with Rohit Sharma (60) to lay the foundation for the win but regular strikes brought Chennai back in the match.

Chennai had put up a challenging 173 for eight after being invited to bat as their top and middle-order batsmen batted superbly with Murali Vijay top-scoring with his 41.

Mumbai were handsomely placed at 144 for one in the 16th over before Chennai stormed back in splendid style to reduce the home team to 159 for 8 with four balls left.

The wicket of Tendulkar, who struck 11 fours and a six in his excellent innings, triggered the collapse as seven wickets fell for just 15 runs which almost put Mumbai on the brink of defeat.

West Indian Smith pulled it around with his splendid, unbeaten 24 in 9 balls, that included two sixes and as many fours.

Tendulkar and Rohit's partnership had virtually looked to have sealed Chennai's fate on a splendid batting track before the sensational collapse.

The duo had cut to size the Chennai attack that looked clueless on how to stop the rampaging second wicket pair.

Rohit hit eight boundaries, including two sixes.

Tendulkar departed in the 16th over, caught brilliantly at short extra cover by Francois du Plessis off R Ashwin when 30 runs were needed and what appeared to be a comfortable task became difficult with a spate of wickets including that of Rohit in the 18th over.

The mayhem began when Dwayne Bravo castled Dinesh karthik (11) and Ravindra Jadeja struck twice in the 18th over to remove Ambati Rayudu (0) and Rohit.

In the end their third straight victory boosted Mumbai's tally to 14 and placed them one point adrift of second-placed Kolkata Knight Riders. — PTI

Sehwag-Gambhir gambit will be a thing to watch
MS Unnikrishnan
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 6
When Virender Sehwag matches his wits against his former Delhi teammate Gautam Gambhir in the Delhi Daredevils vs Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clash in the Indian Premier League at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground here tomorrow, it will be an interesting and keen gambit.

Both the captains would look to maintain their winning run to ensure that their teams make a smooth passage into the play-off stage. Delhi Daredevils are riding on top, have logged 16 points from 10 matches, while KKR are just a point behind, but from 11 matches.

Both the captains are in superb form — leading from the front — to help their teams record a few breathtaking wins. Both have set a high benchmark in amassing runs.

DD captain Virender Sehwag has scored five half centuries to set a new record in IPL while Gambhir has compiled over 400 runs with three half centuries.

Sehwag and Gambhir - having opened together for India, Delhi and Delhi Daredevils and having captained all the three teams at various times - know each other’s game, strategy and intent quite well.

Fans will be keenly looking forward to their face-off when Daredevils and KKR clash for the second time in the league.

Daredevils, having beaten KKR at Eden Gardens by eight wickets and having had a good cruise so far with an enviable record at their home ground in Kotla, will be striving for an encore, while Gambhir will be looking to settle a score for KKR’s defeat on April 5.

KKR have since recovered their ground to almost catch up with Daredevils while Delhi have consolidated their position, despite a couple of unexpected mid-tournament losses, including one at home against Sourav Ganguly-led Pune Warriors India.

But Daredevils’ last two home wins against Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals have been very close, particularly their one-run, heart-stopping last-ball victory against Royals.

The hosts, therefore, cannot afford to show any laxity or mercy against the Kolkata team, as Gambhir has proved that he is an inspiring leader, who can change the course of a match on his own with his clinical batting display.

AB de Villiers blows Deccan Chargers away

Bangalore, May 6
AB de Villiers blasted a whirlwind 17-ball 47 at the death after Tillakaratne Dilshan’s strokeful 71 to help Royal Challengers Bangalore notch up a sensational five-wicket victory over Deccan Chargers in their Indian Premier League match here tonight.

de Villiers emerged as the game changer as he smashed five fours and three sixes to help RCB score 72 runs in the last 3.5 overs and overhaul Deccan's target of 182 with seven balls to spare at the M Chinnaswamy stadium here.

In the 18th over, de Villiers tore apart his countrymate Dale Steyn, smashing two sixes and as many fours to accumulate 23 runs. He then followed it up with two fours and a six in the first three balls of the penultimate over to take his team on the threshold of a much-needed victory.

Chasing 182 to win, Dilshan single-handedly led the runchase and forged a 91-run opening partnership with Chris Gayle (26) to set the foundation but the hosts slipped to 117 for 4 before de Villiers played a blinder to take RCB to the fifth position in the points table.

Earlier, Shikhar Dhawan smashed a strokeful unbeaten 73 to help bottom-placed Deccan Chargers put a challenging score on board.

Opener Dhawan cracked 10 fours and one six in his 52-ball innings and forged 86 runs and 82 runs with Daniel Harris (47) and Cameron White (45) respectively.

Chasing the daunting total, Dilshan began with a flourish smashing Dhawan twice to the fence. In the next over, he fiercely pulled Steyn for a boundary.

Dilshan looked in an agressive form even as he exquisitley punched pacer Veer Pratap Singh between mid off and cover for a boundary in third over of RCB innings.

Running in hard in his second over, Steyn nearly had Chris Gayle when the ball missed the stumps as the West Indian batsman went for a big heave over long off. — PTI

Earlier win led to defeat: Hussey
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 6
Ever heard of a win becoming the reason for a defeat! This is what David Hussey, the stand-in captain of Kings XI Punjab, said during an interaction with the media after his team lost to Rajasthan Royals yesterday.

The over-confidence gained by their last win against Royal Challengers Bangalore made the team suffer a 43-run defeat against Rajasthan Royals, he said. “The defeat was not expected at the home ground in Mohali. But Kings XI Punjab players were yet to get over their four-wicket win over RCB in Bangalore,” he said.

"The players did not switch off well. I think we were still celebrating the win against Bangalore. The players got carried away. The pitch was good for the run chase, but we failed to do it successfully,” said Hussey.

Winning captain Rahul Dravid said that it would be wrong for other teams to take his young and inexperienced side lightly. “We have given a brilliant performance so far and moreover with no big names. People have tagged us as underdogs in the competition, but lack of expectation from us is helping us,” said Dravid.

He said, “We played good cricket against the home team and the result was in our favour. The right switch of foreign players, as per conditions, helped us win the game. With five more games to go, I expect we can get a bit of a roll here.”

On the shorter version of the game, he said, “I still like Test cricket. That format is a real test of players. In my personal experience, Test cricket, so far, is the best thing that has ever happened in my cricketing career.”

Indian women lift Asian squash title
Men falter against Pak

New Delhi, May 6
The Indian women squash team today created history by winning its maiden Asian title by defeating top seed Hong Kong 2-0 in the final in Kuwait. The men's team, however, went down 0-2 against Pakistan in the summit clash in the 16th Asian Team Squash Championship.

In the women's final, Joshna Chinnappa, ranked 71st in the world, waged a grim battle against world number 16 Joey Chan before winning 11-3, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8 in 38 minutes to put India 1-0 ahead.

Dipika Pallikal, ranked 14th, then complemented the superb show by her compatriot, winning 11-8, 12-10, 11-8 against world number seven Annie Au in 32 minutes to seal the issue in India's favour.

India's best performance in the women's team championship was a silver medal at the last championship held in 2010 in Chennai.

Unperturbed by the difference in rankings, Joshna stamped her class over Chan right from the beginning.

She took advantage of the fact that the previous day, her opponent had to endure five hard games against her Malaysian counterpart Delia Arnold.

Joshna's aggressive play, laced with delicate drops and deception, was simply too much for Chan to handle as she dropped the first game 11-2 in less than 10 minutes.

Joshna kept her composure to keep at bay an aggressive Chan in the second game. The Hong Kong racqueter seemed to be warming up in the third game and her shots were more effective as she had the Indian scurrying around the court.

Unaffected by the loss of third game, Joshna came back with a vengeance and wrapped up the fourth game and match to give India the much-needed first point.

Dipika went in next against world number six Annie.

Dipika had never beaten Annie earlier but that did not deter her determination.

Annie made a gallant fightback in the third game, but Dipika held her nerve to claw back from 4-7, winning six straight points to help India collect their first-ever Asian senior women's title.

The Indian men's team, however, faltered at the last hurdle against arch rivals Pakistan.

National champion Saurav Ghosal squandered a 2-0 advantage and went down in five games to Pakistan's number one Farhan Mehboob in the first singles.

The script did not change in the second singles as Siddharth Suchde lost to Farhan Zaman in five games.

The India's men's team equalled its silver-winning performance in the team championship in the inaugural edition of the tournament held in 1981 in Karachi.

Results (finals): Women: Joshna Chinnappa bt Joey Chan 11-3, 11-8, 8-11, 11-5 (32 min); Dipika Pallikal bt Annie Au 11-8, 12-10, 11-8 (37 min).

Men: Farhan Mehboob bt Saurav Ghosal 10-12, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-9.

Farhan Zaman bt Siddharth Suchde 11-7, 11-6, 11-13, 7-11, 11-9. — PTI

Kazakhstan's Prez Cup
Devendro Singh enters final

New Delhi, May 6
Olympics-bound Indian boxer L Devendro Singh continued his fine form at the International Republic of Kazakhstan President's Cup by entering the finals with a thrilling win in the last-four stage in Almaty.

The 20-year-old triumphed over his more experienced opponent — Olympian and Asian Games silver medallist Birzhan Zakipov of Kazakhstan — in an enthralling contest to make it to the final round.

Devendro, who beat Russian boxer Egorov Vasily in the quarters, made a strong start and set the pace of the bout with his fluent ring movement.

He was leading 3-2 after the opening three minutes of play and continued to add to his tally with some precise attacking in the second.

Zakipov though, kept coming back at Devendro with his counter-offence and was close on heels, trailing by just two points.

In the final round, the Kazakh boxer tried hard to take the game away from the Indian, but Devendro was solid in his defence. He lost the round but managed to win the bout on countback after the scores were level at 16-16.

"My opponent was a very experienced boxer and fought with very sound technique and strategy, it was a tough fight and I am very happy to have returned on the winning side of it," Devendro said.

He will be looking to secure his first gold medal on the senior tour when he takes on Cuba's top light flyweight boxer Yosvany Veita in the summit clash.

The other two Indian boxers in the fray in the round of four — Asian Games silver medallist Manpreet Singh (91kg) and debutant Kanwar Preet Singh (+91kg) — had to settle for a bronze medal finish from the tournament.

The two Indians lost out to the respective Kazakh opponents in the semifinals. Manpreet put up a brave fight against Abduganiev Arbek but in the end came up short 12-19.

Kanwar, on the other hand, went down in a one-sided contest, losing 3-13 to Dichko Ivan. — PTI
