Cuttack, May 1
Skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Cameron White's brutal hitting at the death proved to be the decisive factor as Deccan Chargers defeated Pune Warriors by 13 runs in their Indian Premier League match, here today. Chasing a stiff target of 187, the visitors could manage 173 for five after Sangakkara (82; 52b, 10x4 2x6) and White (74; 45b, 4x4 4x6) bludgeoned the Pune bowlers to score 95 runs in the last six overs.

Sangakkara's partnership of 157 for the third wicket with White, which is incidentally the highest third-wicket stand in the history of IPL, ensured that home team post a massive total. The key was the 18th and 19th over of the Chargers innings when Sangakkara and White took 25 runs each to consolidate their position. It was 40-year-old Pune skipper Sourav Ganguly who was clobbered for 25 runs in the 18th over which changed the complexion of the match.

In reply, the Warriors lost Manish Pandey with nothing on the board in the very first ball of the innings, but Sourav Ganguly (45 off 40) and Clarke (41 off 31) kept alive the visiting team's chances by scoring at a brisk pace. Steven Smith top-scored for the visitors with a well-made 47 off 27 balls but his effort went in-vain.

But before his arrival, it was the duo of Ganguly and Clarke that dominated the proceedings. The two played some breathtaking shots during their 90-run stand for the second wicket but Ganguly was also guilty of playing too many dot balls which increased the pressure.

One of the world's premier fast bowlers, Steyn was hit for two successive boundaries by Ganguly on either side of the wicket but he was unusually subdued against his statemate Veer Pratap Singh whom he couldn't hit for boundaries. That was not all as Steyn leaked 17 runs in his next over. Ganguly launched the assault by hitting the pacer over cover in his trademark style and after that, Clarke collected three fours - one over square-leg and two through point - to put the pressure back on the Chargers.

There was some respite for the Chargers after Amit Mishra ran Clarke out in the 12th over. Even as the regular bowlers failed to make a breakthrough, Shikhar Dhawan's part-time spin did the trick as he had Ganguly caught by White at cover.

With two new batsmen at the crease, it was not easy for Pune to keep up with the required run-rate, but Smith and Robin Uthappa tried their best to make a match of it. But in the end, it was Sangakkara and White's onslaught that made the difference and helped Chargers record their second win of the league. — PTI

Sehwag too hot to handle for Royals

Jaipur, May 1
Virender Sehwag continued his sensational form as well as his team’s superb run as they did the double over Rajasthan Royals, beating them by six wickets in an IPL match, here tonight.

Sehwag was at his brutal best as he slaughtered the Royals’ bowling all over the park in a 38-ball 73, that included 12 fours and a six. Chasing a moderate 142 for a win, the Daredevils wasted presious little time and energy as they raced past the finish line in the 16th over when Naman Ojha hit Ashok Menaria for a lofted boundary over covers.

Earlier, young left-arm spinner Pawan Negi bowled the best spell of his short career as Delhi Daredevils restricted Rajasthan Royals 141 for six.

The 19-year-old Delhi lad had brilliant figures of four for 18 as he ran through the Royals top-order after the home team were off to blazing start.

Current 'Orange Cap' holder Ajinkya Rahane (42, 32 balls, 7x4) and skipper Rahul Dravid (57, 43 balls, 7x4) added 71 runs from only 8.3 overs before Negi dismissed Rahane, Shane Watson (8), Brad Hodge (1) and Ashok Menaria (1) to get Daredevils right back in the match.

Even though Dravid completed his half century in only 35 balls, the Royals had lost momentum courtesy a brilliant Negi and never recovered from that batting collapse. Rahane, who has been in sublime form during this edition started off from where he had left against Daredevils in the match at the Kotla. The third over of the innings -- second from Irfan Pathan saw the left-arm medium pacer hit for four boundaries. With skipper Dravid also playing confidently, runs flowed from the blades of the two batsmen. The 50 came at the end of five overs and Royals were off to a flier.

Daredevils' find-of-the-season Shahbaz Nadeem didn't bowl a good first spell but another youngster — Delhi boy Negi rose to the occasion as he got four wickets in a space of three overs. First it was Rahane who needlessly played a reverse sweep only to offer a simple catch Sehwag. — PTI

RCB hope to return to winning ways

Bangalore, May 1
Dropped to the fifth position from third in the points table, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) would look to return to winning ways against an improving Kings XI Punjab here tomorrow to brighten up their play-off chances in the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League.

The loss against Kolkata Knight Riders by 47 runs in their last game notwithstanding, RCB would look to draw inspiration from the five-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab in the last encounter between the two sides at Mohali. But RCB will have to fight tooth and nail against Kings XI to conjure up a win at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

It has been a mixed outing for RCB so far in the tournament, winning four games and losing as many from nine outings with one match against Chennai Super Kings being washed out. RCB's foreign recruits - Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and to some extent Tillakartane Dilshan - have played stellar roles in the victories, but the form of its domestic players has been a major worry for the Bangalore outfit.
Virat Kohli will look to find some form as his team try and break into the top four
Need a Virat show! Virat Kohli will look to find some form as his team try and break into the top four.

Gayle and de Villiers have been at their devastating best with the bat, but find themselves waging a lonely battle time and again because of the lack of support from domestic players. Virat Kohli, Saurabh Tiwary, Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara all have failed to contribute with the bat so far, thereby putting extra pressure on the foreign players, especially Gayle to do the bulk of the scoring.

On the flip side, Kings XI is slowly and steadily finding their form after a slow start to the tournament. And come tomorrow, the Punjab outfit would look to extend their winning run following the the seven-run victory over defending champions Chennai Super Kings in their last game.

Mandeep Singh has been in superb touch for the Kings XI all through the IPL.

Kings XI has eight points from nine games with four wins and five loses and the visitors would look to increase their tally to keep alive their play-off chances.

But Punjab's misery is compounded by the absence of their skipper Gilchrist, who is out with a hamstring injury.

In the absence of Gilchrist, Kings XI would be banking heavily on stand-in-skipper David Hussey to deliver the goods. The younger among the Hussey brothers, has so far scored 210 runs from eights innings at an average of 30.

Besides Hussey, another Australian Shaun Marsh has also been amongst runs.

He has so far notched up 258 runs in nine innings and has been instrumental in Kings XI's wins.

Young Mandeep Singh, who has 234 runs under his belt, would also like to carry on his good showing up the order. — PTI

Super Kings challenged for the first time, says Fleming

Chennai, May 1
In a candid submission, defending champions Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming has said that his side has been "challenged for the first time" in the history of the Indian Premier League. Fleming admitted that CSK has been "below par" in this edition of the tournament after suffering a five-wicket loss at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders here last night.

Star-studded CSK has been inconsistent in the ongoing IPL and is occupying the fourth position in the standings with nine points from 10 games. "We have to analyse the fact that for the first time we have been challenged. We usually have been consistent, but now there are number of issues that needs to be fixed quickly," Fleming said at the post-match press conference.

"We are very aware that we are struggling at home. It's disappointing because we have been so strong at home in the previous years. We have struggled to come to terms with the surfaces but certainly there are no excuses. We played below par and it's hurting us.

"We now have to win games away. It's the time of the tournament we need to play good cricket. We are not out of it, but we need to tidy things up," he added. Asked about the reason behind the defeat against KKR, Fleming said his side was not upto the mark in all the departments of the game.

"It came to the last over and gave us a chance. But there were couple of areas we could have done better. The intent was lot better with the bat but we couldn't get that 15-20 runs which we usually get through boundaries," Fleming said. "With the ball we bowled a lot of wides. And on the fielding front we were not quite accurate." — PTI

Awana to work harder after India ‘A’ snub

New Delhi, May 1
By his own admission, it has been quite a struggle for 25-year-old Parvinder Awana during his five years of first-class cricket and the snub from national selectors for India A's tour of West Indies is just another addition to that list. "Obviously, when you get 57 wickets in the domestic season, you expect a call-up. I was hurt initially but this rejection has made me even more determined to perform even better in the next domestic season. I haven't spoken to anyone after the news of the team selection came out. Just spoke to my folks and informed them that I haven't been selected," Awana told PTI during an interaction.

"I have never got anything easily in my life. Even when I have played for Delhi, I have treated each and every match as my last opportunity. I have been conditioned in such a way that I have learnt to take rejections in my stride. You don't stop working hard because you have been rejected.” — PTI

I am not joining politics: Sachin

Pune, May 1
Sachin Tendulkar today said that his nomination to the Rajya Sabha was an honour but made it clear that he was not quiting cricket to join politics and will always remain a sportsman. Speaking for the first time since he was nominated for a Rajya Sabha seat on April 26, Tendulkar stated he would never enter politics by giving up cricket which he said was his life.

"I am not a politician. I am a sportsman and will always remain one. I am not going to enter politics giving up cricket, which is my life. I will continue to play cricket," he said during a felicitation function by a private firm for scoring his 100th international ton.

Tendulkar's acceptance of the Rajya Sabha membership has evoked a mixed reaction amongst sportspersons and politicians. While many have hailed the government's decision to honour him, there were others who have raised doubts on whether the champion batsman can find time and contribute in the Rajya Sabha.

The 39-year-old Tendulkar acknowledged that the honour bestowed on him was for his contribution to the field of cricket. "I believe the President has chosen me after recognising what I have done for over 22 years," he said. "Cricket is my expertise. I would like to contribute to that field. I am a sportsman and I will always be a sportsman," said Tendulkar who is the highest run getter in international cricket.

He said many eminent persons, including melody queen Lata Mangeshkar and actor Prithviraj Kapoor too, had been nominated by the President for their contribution in their respective fields.

Replying to a question on his scoring the 100th international hundred, Tendulkar said winning the World Cup was his most cherished dream, for which, he waited for close to 22 years. "John Wright (the then coach) had told me in 2003 that I could become the first player to score hundred centuries. One has to keep chasing dreams till they come true," he said.

"Sometimes, success is waiting round the corner and one should always think of taking that extra step to achieve it," he added. Recalling the wild celebrations in the country when India won the World Cup last year, Tendulkar said, "Outside the stadium, my driver told me that fans are dancing on my car. I told him not to stop them. I did not worry about the dents to the car. The Cup had brought the whole country together and it was the greatest day of my life." On his handling of pressure situations, Tendulkar said, "While batting, it is important to concentrate on the present moment without thinking of the problems faced in the past. You have half a second to react while facing the next ball. One has to keep the mind blank and heart rate down to make the right decision." He told the audience that their good wishes were important for him to keep going. — PTI

Man City beat United in decider derby
Kompany scores solitary goal as Manchester City go ahead on goal difference with just two games left in the season

Manchester, May 1
Vincent Kompany's towering header earned Manchester City a momentous 1-0 victory over uninspired title rivals Manchester United on Monday to put Roberto Mancini's side within two victories of Premier League glory. The Belgian defender rose unmarked just before halftime at the Etihad Stadium to settle a compelling and frantic derby that lacked quality but more than made up for in tension.

Reigning champions United, thumped 6-1 at home by City earlier in the season, were disappointing and could not avert a rare "double" by their 'noisy' neighbours. City moved above Alex Ferguson's side on goal difference with a tricky away match at Newcastle United and a home game with strugglers Queens Park Rangers to come.

The Manchester rivals both have 83 points but City hold a superior goal difference of eight. The momentum is now with Mancini's side who have clawed back an eight-point deficit since Easter to move within sight of a first top flight title since 1968.

"It's far from over and we know that," Kompany told Sky Sports in the tunnel as celebratory songs from City's long suffering fans echoed into the Manchester night.

"But just to give our fans two wins against Manchester United this season... we have to finish it off and I hope we can show this in the next two games."

United had just two shots on target, hardly forcing City goalkeeper Joe Hart into a save, and Mancini, who took the club into the Champions League for the first time this season, said his side were deserved winners. "We are happy but next Sunday we have another difficult game (at Newcastle)," he said. "But we deserved to win this game, we had other chances for a second goal and they did not have any chances to score."

Ferguson was critical of United's overall performance. "It was feisty and competitive with not a lot of goal chances... and I'm disappointed we never tested their goalkeeper... our crossing was poor," he said. "We had control in some parts but not enough to cause any damage."

A crackling atmosphere greeted the players as the sun set in Manchester and it was Ferguson's experienced title winners, bidding to secure the club's 20th English crown, who looked the more comfortable in the opening exchanges.

There were clearly some nerves in the home ranks, both on and off the field, and United threatened in the opening minutes when Ryan Giggs was allowed too much time to cross into the box and, as City struggled to clear, Michael Carrick prodded wide.

With Diego Maradona watching from the stands it was City's South Americans who began to warm to the task, along with Spaniard David Silva who orchestrated City's attack. Argentine Carlos Tevez got free on the right but his cross was well cleared and then compatriot Sergio Aguero sliced a shot high and wide when well placed. — Reuters

Roy Hodgson lands England job

London, May 1
Roy Hodgson was appointed England manager on a four-year contract on Tuesday, ending months of speculation over who would lead the national team to next month's European Championship.

The experienced 64-year-old, who has been in charge of Premier League West Bromwich Albion since February last year, became the 13th permanent post-War England manager after succeeding Italian Fabio Capello.

"This is a very proud day for me, I'm a very happy man to be offered the chance to manage my country and I'm looking forward to the task ahead," Englishman Hodgson, who the FA said was the unanimous choice of the board, said at a news conference at Wembley.

"Everyone knows it's not an easy one but I'm hoping everyone, the fans and supporters get behind the team. "It's the team that counts and I will do my very best to make sure they are prepared as well as possible for the tasks that lay ahead."

Capello left his role as England manager in February, four years after taking over from Steve McClaren, despite a successful Euro 2012 qualifying campaign. Since then Stuart Pearce, the under-21s coach, had been in temporary charge with Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp the hot favourite to be offered the job.

FA chairman David Bernstein refused to talk about why Redknapp was overlooked, preferring to trumpet the credentials of Hodgson. "After putting together a shortlist Roy emerged as the standout candidate," Bernstein said. "We met at Wembley yesterday and we quickly agreed that Roy was the right man to guide us to the European Championship and future tournaments.

"I want to make it quite clear we were unanimous in choosing Roy," Bernstein added. "He is a manager of a vast experience of international and European football, in fact this is the first time the FA has appointed a manager with any previous international experience and this will I'm be a great benefit to him in making the adjustment from club management.

"Roy has outstanding contacts and could walk into any training ground across the world and command respect." West Brom confirmed on their website that Hodgson, who replaced now Chelsea caretaker coach Roberto Di Matteo last year, would remain in charge for the final two games of the season, away to Bolton Wanderers and home to Arsenal.

"Roy's appointment as England Manager is obviously disappointing news for the club as we would have liked him to sign a new contract, which was in the process of negotiation, and remain as our head coach," West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace said in a statement. — Reuters
