7 endangered species of turtles seized

A team of the People for Animals (PFA), along with the UT police, raided a house in Sector 22 here this evening and recovered seven turtles of an endangered species, which were being sold openly.

CTU to launch night service
Chandigarh, May 1
While the CTU is ready to launch its night service in the city, the condition of bus queue shelters like this one is pitiable. T Going beyond its standard timings for the plying of buses till 9 pm, the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) will now run its low-floor buses on the city roads till 3 am. At present, the night bus service is operational between the ISBT-17 and the ISBT-43 and to the railway station. The new bus service would be especially for night travellers.

Safai karamcharis in city go on strike
Chandigarh, May 1
Safai karamcharis protest near the MC office at Sector 17, Chandigarh, on Tuesday; and (right) bags of garbage thrown by residents near the bus stand in Sector 21. Employees of the door-to-door garbage collection association did not lift garbage from most of the sectors today in protest against the execution of contract system at Sector 22. Around 800 employees staged a protest in front of offices of the Municipal Corporation at 10 sectors demanding employment in the corporation.

Estate Office to verify occupants’ antecedents
Chandigarh, May 1
The UT Estate Office has constituted several teams of inspectors which will look into the complaints of EWS quarters having been rented out or sold by allottees. These quarters had been allotted to people in different parts of the city under the rehabilitation schemes of the Chandigarh Administration.

UT to act tough against auto-rickshaws coming from Panchkula, Mohali
Chandigarh, May 1
Members of the LPG Auto Drivers Union stage a dharna at Sector 25 in Chandigarh on Tuesday. The State Transport Authority, Chandigarh, has decided to act tough against the operators of diesel and petrol-run auto-rickshaws that ply from the neighbouring towns of Mohali and Panchkula. The transport authority has been issuing permits to the owners of the registered LPG auto-rickshaws and to those who have made alterations in their diesel/petrol-run vehicles in order to run them on LPG.

Golden Forest investors to launch stir 
Chandigarh, May 1 
After not getting any response from the liquidation committee of the Supreme Court, which was formed to settle the claims of investors of the Golden Forests India Ltd (GFIL), investors have threatened to launch an agitation against the committee if their claims were not settled within three months.

More errors in PU paper

Errors in question papers seem to have become a common feature in examinations conducted by Panjab University (PU). After the blunders reported in several papers in the ongoing undergraduate examinations recently, errors were reported today in the second semester examination of Family Law.

338 students honoured on annual day
Patiala, May 1
Minister of Parliament Balwinder Singh Bhunder was the chief guest on the annual day function celebrated at Khalsa College, Patiala, today. A total of 338 students were given prizes on the occasion. For the session 2010-11, 47 students were awarded rolls of honour, 36 were given college colours and 13 students were honoured with special prizes. For the session 2011-12, 30 students were given rolls of honour, 49 were awarded with college colours and 12 were given special prizes.

Specify nature of land in two weeks: High Court
Chandigarh, May 1
Nearly a week after the Punjab Government claimed it was probing whether the land purchased by no less than 60 high-ranking officers on the periphery of Chandigarh was public, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today set two weeks deadline for specifying the nature of the land.

A lower court has directed the Chandigarh police to register a case of murder in connection with the mysterious death of a Burail resident last year. On October 31, 2011, a youth died after falling off the roof.

NIA in dock over arrest

The National Investigating Agency (NIA) today found itself in a spot as it admitted that Kamal Chauhan, an accused in the Samjhauta bomb blast case, was in custody on February 10.

Chain snatched
Chandigarh, May 1
Incidents of snatching continue unabated in the city. Shakuntla Sharma, a resident of Sector 40, reported to the police that two unidentified motorcycle-borne persons sped away after snatching her gold chain near her residence.

Mohali, May 1
Three motorcycle-borne youths snatched a gold chain of an aged woman at Sector 68 here this morning. The police registered a case at the Phase-VIII police station. The victim, Mohinder Pal Kaur, reported that she was buying vegetables in front of her house around 8:30 am when the incident occurred.

Two woman snatchers held
Mohali, May 1
Two women attempting to snatch the purse of another in front of a gurdwara at Sohana were nabbed red-handed by the public this afternoon and later handed to the police.

3 booked for not giving details of PGs
Mohali, May 1
Taking action against landlords who have not furnished details of their paying guests (PGs) or tenants, the Mohali Police booked three persons under Section 188 of the IPC here today.

21-year-old girl commits suicide
Panchkula, May 1 
A 21-year-old girl, Payal of Sector 14, committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her house late last night.

Two Mohali XENs held for gangrape
Panchkula, May 1
After more than a month, the local police has arrested two officers with the Punjab government for gangraping a 19-year-old resident of Sector 15 on March 25. The accused were identified as Jaswinder and Jasveer, executive engineers (XENs) with the B&R wing of the PWD at Mohali.

Manjeet to fly to london

Manjeet Singh. Rower and an ex-trainee of the Chandigarh Rowing Training Centre at Sukhna Lake, Manjeet Singh, made the city proud after booking his ticket for London Olympics 2012, on Sunday.
Manjeet started his career in 2004 under the guidance of Arvind Sehgal, a coach from Chandigarh Sports Council, here.
