Tech conference concludes
: The two-day national conference on “Emerging trends in computer science and engineering - ETCSE-2012” concluded at the Guru Kashi University today. The participants were welcomed by the director, Dr Narinder Singh. The technical sessions were chaired by Dr Lakhwinder Kaur of the Panjab University, Chandigarh and Dr Savita Gupta of the Punjabi University, Patiala. The certificates were distributed to the speakers.

Chandigarh: The BJP has invited applications from those who want the ticket for the MC poll in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Patiala and Ludhiana. The aspirants are to send their application to district presidents.The application fee is Rs 1000 for general category candidates and Rs 500 for women, SC and BCs .

Newborn found
: A newborn baby boy was found abandoned in the Jaobpura locality here on Saturday. The boy is about 9-day-old. Dr Praveen Garg, Civil Surgeon, said the newborn was found abandoned at the Jain temple on Friday night. The temple managers brought the child to the General Hospital.

9 arrested
: With the arrest of nine persons, the police has busted a gang of burglars. Stolen property worth Rs 24 lakh has been recovered from their possession. Rakesh Kumar Arya, district police chief, said three accused who were remanded to police custody, confessed that they committed a burglary at Subhash Bajaj’s house in Vishnu Colony on February 18.

Fire in mill
: Two sawing machines and a huge stock of timber worth over Rs 5 lakh were destroyed in a fire, which broke out in Charan Singh’s saw mill on the Rewari-Mahendergarh road on Saturday night. Several fire tenders worked for about six hours to extinguish the fire.

2 held for selling stolen mobiles
: Two accused, Shankar Thapa and Deepu Thapa, relatives and resident of Raipur, were arrested by the Raipur police while selling the stolen mobile phones at Raipur on Sunday. The shopkeeper Ajit Kumar at Ranipokhri and a hotelier Vikas were also arrested by the police for purchasing the stolen mobiles from the accused. The accused admitted to breaking into Sachdeva Mobile Shop situated at Raipur from the rear side on March 24 and stealing 14 mobiles and some cash. Shankar Thapa was also arrested in the past for committing theft in a temple as well in the city. 

Illegal arms to be destroyed: One hundred and seventythree illegal revolvers and rifles, had been directed to be destroyed by the department of the Joint Director, Planning, on Sunday. A committee of three members constituted by the District Magistrate, comprising the City Magistrate, the Superintendent of Police, Traffic, and an officer from the Planning Department will ensure the action. The money procured from this process would then be deposited in the state treasury.

Shortage of LPG cylinders in Lal Kuan: The residents of Lal Kuan town in Nainital district are facing an extreme shortage of LPG. Things have come to a pass that the women of the Ambedkar Nagar locality of the town lost their patience on Saturday and locked the gas agency with the employees inside. The matter was resolved after the intervention of the police. The residents of the town claim that the supply has been disrupted for almost a month now. They claim that while the domestic consumers are not getting gas cylinders, the hoteliers are not facing any such shortage. They have been alleging that the cylinders are easily available in the black market at a premium.

Green Haldwani drive launched: A drive has been started across Haldwani to make every government department office green. Saplings are being planted on the premises of every department under the drive that has been named Clean Haldwani Green Haldwani. The initiative in this regard has been undertaken by the newly-elected legislator and cabinet minister Indira Hridayesh. The departments are also being encouraged to adopt public parks and ensure their maintenance.

Youth run over by train: A youth was killed near Rudrapur after he was run over by a train. The deceased is yet to be identified. The body was found lying adjacent to a railway track near the Chhatarpur railway crossing on Saturday. The passersby informed the police who took the body in its custody. The efforts are on to get him identified.

Initiative to protect Sharda Ghats: The local municipal body in the Tanakpur area of Champawat district has launched an initiative to renovate and protect the Sharda Ghats that were devastated in the monsoons last year. The initiative has been launched in coordination with the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC). A survey of the ghats has been carried out and it has been decided that a 30-m spur at Rs 10 lakh would be constructed to protect the ghat.
