Anna returns to Jantar Mantar
New Delhi, March 25 The protest drew thousands of people, including women, children and even good number of elderly supporters. The venue of agitation, which advocated protection of whistleblowers in the cases of corruption, had a big banner with a picture of Hazare and 19 martyred whistleblowers on the stage. On the podium, Hazare was accompanied by Justice Santosh Hegde, Shanti Bhushan, Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi and Manish Sisodia. It was Hazare's first protest of this year in the city after his agitation in December last year at the Ramlila Grounds which had to be called off midway due to his ailing health. People were spotted wearing Anna caps with Tricolours in their hands as patriotic songs played in the background to keep the momentum going. The daylong protest had all the usual ingredients, with almost 2,000 people assembling at the venue much before Anna Hazare arrived after a visit to Rajghat. "I am a regular visitor of Annaji's campaigns. I went to the Ramlila Grounds last year also," said Kunal Sachdeva, a final year student who had come from Rohini. By lunchtime, several people who could not find a comfortable spot inside the venue scaled up the walls and soon enough, even the walls were full. Some supporters had come from the outskirts of the Capital like Ghaziabad and Faridabad. "It was my day off from work. So I came here as I to have been a victim of corruption," Shrishti Babar, one of the Anna supporters. Big screens were installed around the venue to help people view on-stage proceedings. A small film on whistleblowers was played on the screens and brief descriptions were given about them. In between, patriotic songs were also sung. "For the protection of the whistleblowers and a speedy justice for those killed fighting corruption, we have been demanding the implementation of the Jan Lokpal Bill for the past one year," said Anna. But both the government and parliamentarians are creating hurdles in the passage of the Bill, protecting the corrupt politicians," he said. |
Cong, BJP rely on bigwigs for MCD battle
New Delhi, March 25 The lists of the candidates are a clear indication that the bigwigs of the parties have managed to bag tickets for the crucial elections. In the Congress, special care has been taken of senior municipal leaders, including the Leader of the Opposition Jai Kishen Sharma, Mukesh Goel, Chaudhary Ajit Singh. Whereas, former Mayor Jaishree Pawar, who had applied for ticked from Shahpur Jat, was rejected by the party high command due to her indictment in a sting operation. Members of the Congress apex committee set up to select the candidates said that it was a very tough job as the state office was flooded with at least 6,000 applications. "We tried to focus more on young leaders and people involved in local politics. Different aspects, including education and even the personality, have been taken into account while selecting the candidates," said Vivek Sharma, Delhi Congress spokesperson. On the other hand, the BJP has focused more on the candidates with proven track records in their respective wards and Assembly elections held in 2008. The final list of the BJP includes the likes of standing committee chairman Yogender Chandolia, Mayor Rajni Abbi, education committee chairman Mahender Nagpal, Meera Aggrawal, Ram Krishan, Rajesh Ghelot and Anil Sharma. "We made the selections on the basis of a survey conducted by us to get feedback from general public on the civic body, the report from the zila parishad and the activisim of our leaders in the Assembly polls of 2008," said Subhash Arya, who will be fighting from Rajauri Garden. Though, 136 of the total 272 seats are reserved for women, the BJP leaders said the total number of women candidates was exceeding the mandatory limit. The polling for the North, South and East Delhi municipal corporations will to held on April 15. |

For the common man, AIIMS facilities except the emergency department may be shut on a Sunday, but not for VIPs. While the practice is a routine for the premier institute, an unusual matter of a dog given radiotherapy at its Dr B R A Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital (IRCH), has come to light.
In August last year, the pet dog (Simpa) of the AIIMS deputy director (administration), Vineet Chaudhary, received radiotherapy at the centre on a Sunday, when the hospital doesn't treat patients. The pet died later. As learnt from sources, the hospital's staff and doctors had specially come for Simpa's radiotherapy on a weekly holiday. Demanding an inquiry into the matter, an NGO Janhit Abhiyan, has written a letter to Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is the president of the institute. A response has also been sought whether AIIMS, which has a waiting period for cancer patients for two to three months, has any provision of treating animals along with humans. For the Punjabis
A well-known name amongst the Punjabis of Delhi, Jaswant Singh, aka Bobby, has been elected president of the Punjabi Promotion Council for a two-year term. The council is also planning to launch a Punjabi weekly on web. According to Jaswant Singh, the broader vision of the council for the development of Punjabi can he achieved only when the issues and directions are clear. A number of Punjabi organisations are known only for music and dance. Mobile phones switched off
Senior politicians who are in the election committee of the two major parties in Delhi--the BJP and the Congress-keep their mobile phones switched off to avoid questions of the media persons and the ticket seekers. Just after the date for submission of application for tickets to contest the MCD election was over, the media persons started calling the leaders to know the names of candidates finalized by the election committee of the each party. The ticket seekers also tried to contact the election committee members. Media persons and ticket seekers visited the party offices also but came back after finding their offices locked. This always happens in election time! (Contributed by Ananya Panda, Syed Ali Ahmed) |
