A 25-year-old boy was killed and five of his friends, including three girls, were injured in a deadly accident when the car they were travelling in first hit a divider and then rammed into an electricity pole in the Shakarpur area of east Delhi late last night.

All six friends were heading towards India Gate after watching a movie at Great India Place mall in Noida when the accident took place at Vikas Marg near ITO.

According to police officials, the deceased has been identified as Shubhneet Bishnoi, a BTech student from Rampur district in Uttar Pradesh. The injured include Shubham (19), Gurjeet (21), Shikha (20), Nikita (20) and Kavita (19).

"We had received a call about the incident around 1.45 am today. When we reached the spot we found a badly damaged car with five occupants stuck inside. Gas-cutters were used to rescue them," a senior police official said.

Nikita's left hand was separated from her body.

One of the injured, Shubham, also plays cricket for Delhi. Recounting the horror of the accident, he said that after watching a movie in Noida, they all came back to Laxmi Nagar where they stayed.

After a while, they planned to visit India Gate and took off in a Toyota Corolla which was being driven by Gurjeet.

Kavita was seated beside Gurjeet. He, along with Nikita and Shubhneet, was sitting in the back seat. The vehicle was being driven at a very high speed and hence hit the divider, said Shubham.

When the PCR vans reached the spot, the car had turned over several times over to the side of the road with all six friends trapped inside. Subhneet and Nikita were taken to LNJP Hospital while others were taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital.

Gurjeet received serious injuries and is currently in the ICU.

While the process of ticket distribution has not begun so far, ticket seekers have started meeting senior leaders who are considered helpful. Those who have been active for years in a party are sure that they will get the tickets to contest the MCD elections.

However, when a party activist met two senior leaders and submitted her bio-data a few days ago, she realized to her chagrin that being active in the party was not a guarantee for getting the ticket. Two things--money and networking-do help in getting a ticket. So, have money and good contacts with the powers that be for the ticket.

"Those who work for senior leaders with sincerity should not feel sure of getting the ticket as these leaders are too busy in their work and just forget workers' contributions," said a disgruntled worker who has been active in politics for the last 15 years.

Loan to minorities

Loan to scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, other backward classes and minorities is a cumbersome process in Delhi. For every loan applicant, a guarantor is required. The guarantor should be a gazetted officer.

It has been noticed that in the case of minorities, the officers belonging to the minority community signing as guarantor are quite few which may be the reason that less than one per cent minorities have availed themselves of the loan facility of the government.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit recently held a meeting on the issue with Delhi Minorities Commission chairman Safdar Khan and members Pushpinder Singh and A.C. Michael. It was suggested in the meeting that the 'no-guarantee bar' up to a loan of Rs 50,000 be raised to Rs 1.50 lakh. If that happens, it will be great relief to the minority communities.

CCTV cameras installed at all Metro stations

In the wake of numerous suicide incidents reported from several Metro stations in the Capital over the last few months, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has installed CCTV cameras on all its 139 stations on the 168-km network.

The DMRC authorities are now in the process of connecting each station with a control room. About 5,200 CCTV cameras have been installed, which cover every nook and corner of a station. Every underground station has about 45 to 50 cameras installed while the elevated stations have about 16 to 20 cameras each. The monitoring of these cameras is done by the CISF, which is in charge of the security of Metro.

‘300 Ramayanas’ may go off DU history syllabus
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 18
Delhi University may finally drop the much-controversial essay, "300 Ramayanas" by historian AK Ramanujan from the BA history syllabus at its upcoming academic council meeting on Marc h 20. The minutes of the previous meeting for removal of the essay have been put up for confirmation at the meeting this time.

Ending all hopes for the revival of the essay, the agenda of the upcoming meeting does not even include a review of the controversial decision to drop the essay.

The proposal for the removal of the essay from the syllabus was approved in October last year.

"The academic council considered the external peer review reports of eminent scholars on the essay. After extensive debate, the academic council resolved to discontinue the said essay from the list of suggested readings in BA (Hons). Ten members dissented," the agenda says.

Once the minutes are approved, the decision will go to the University's executive council, which has the authority to ask for a review, said members of the executive council. The executive council is set to meet on March 21.

Individual political groups on campus, which led a strong protest on the dropping of the syllabus earlier, are likely to raise the voice against the move.

The democratic teachers' front (DTF) is yet to decide on its protest move for the meeting scheduled on March 20.

"The university has been unfair and we have our stand and we will stand by it," said a member of the academic council of the DTF.

New Delhi, March 18
The Congress is facing an uphill task in finalising the candidates for the south and north Delhi municipal corporations and it seems that the final decision will be taken by a special committee consisting of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Jaiprakash Agarwal and Delhi state affairs in-charge Chaudhary Virender Singh.

The Congress has constituted election committees under the chairmanship of MPs for taking decisions regarding all three corporations. The committees consist of MLAs and other senior leaders. The MPs, on the basis of suggestions given by MLAs, will recommend names of the prospective candidates, according to sources.

However, if the sources are to be believed, the party may be in for some problems in south and North Delhi due to lack of coordination between MLAs and MPs.

According to the sources, for the Congress, decisions regarding the East Delhi Municipal Corporation, which has 64 wards, may be easier to arrive at as there is good coordination between the MPs and the MLAs of the area. East Delhi has two MPs-- Jaiprakash Agarwal and Sandeep Dikshit.

But the party may face some difficulties in North Delhi. The North Delhi Municipal Corporation covers the entire area of Chandni Chowk and North Delhi parliamentary constituencies, which are represented by Kapil Sibal and Krishna Tirath, respectively. But the North Delhi Municipal Corporation also covers some areas of the West Delhi parliamentary constituency which is represented Mahabal Mishra.

The Congress can manage the MLAs and MPs of Chandni Chowk and West Delhi, but it will have to iron out some differences between the MLAs and MP of North Delhi.

Meanwhile, according to sources, taking into account the alleged disagreement between the MPs and MLAs in south Delhi, it seems that the committee of Jaiprakash Agarwal, Sheila Dikshit and Virender Singh will have to take the final decision about the candidates. The situation is expected to benefit the aspirants who are close to these leaders.

The South Delhi Corporation has two MPs-- Ramesh Kumar from the South and Ajay Maken from the New Delhi parliamentary constituencies. Some part of West Delhi also comes in this municipal body.

The elections for the three corporations will take place on April 15.

NGO run by BJP chief’s wife gets govt notice
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 18
The exchange of allegations between the BJP and the Delhi government has taken the shape of a legal battle after the city government has slapped showcause notice to NGO Sampurna being run by the wife of the Delhi unit chief of the BJP, Vijender Gupta.

The government served notice to the NGO on Wednesday for allegedly failing to provide the annual list of governing body members since its inception in 2000 which the government said was a violation of provisions of the Society Registration Act, sources said.

The sources said that the notice was served by the Firm and Societies Section of the Industries department two days after Dikshit alleged that the NGO headed by Gupta's wife Shobha Vijender get huge sums of money from the BJP-ruled MCD and Social Welfare Department of the city government.

The department has directed the NGO to file its reply to the allegation as well as furnish the list of its governing body members within 15 days, warning that failing to comply with the notice will invite action prescribed under the Act.

The second notice was issued on Thursday by the industries department after it received a complaint alleging that the NGO furnished a "false affidavit" to obtain government registration.

The complainant, S C Kohli, who is the secretary of an NGO called Jan Adhar Manch, sought action against Sampurna alleging that the NGO produced a "false affidavit" stating that none of its members has blood relations with each other, which is a mandatory norm for any voluntary body to get government registration.

The NGO has been asked to reply within seven days to the show-cause notice as to why action should not be taken against it as per provision of the relevant law.

JNUSU to step up stir on viva marks in entrance exam
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 18
The indefinite strike of the JNU Student Union entered the fifth day today. The union is demanding reduction in viva marks at the entrance exam to be addressed at the university's Academic Council meeting tomorrow.

The JNUSU has now called for a university strike and a massive demonstration right in front of the council meeting.

The union has been contending over the past week that the AC meeting doesn't include any of the longstanding student issues, including enhancement of merit-cum-means scholarship, non-NET scholarships, financial assistance to PH/VH students, which have not been increased for several years.

"From extensive analysis of admission data, we have concrete proof that the high weight of the viva marks in JNU's entrance exam is being used to exclude students from getting admission. In JNU, the weight of viva marks is as high as 30%, and we have several instances of students getting high marks in the written exam, but low marks in the viva. For example, in one centre, the average percentage difference between the general category and SC students in the written exam is 18.8%, while the difference in the viva exam is 46.8%. This trend is no exception - it can be seen in centres across schools," said Abhishek Kumar Yadav, JNUSU vice-president.

SAD (Delhi-UK) vows to implement pay panel report
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 18
Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi-UK) president Jasjit Singh (UK) said that the community should come forward to pressurise the authorities concerned for the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee election. It has been delayed for more than a year.

He appealed to the community members to support the SAD Delhi UK that has promised to implement the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations if it is voted to power.

He said that the present gurdwara committee is a caretaker that could not take any financial decision. Land of Guru Harkishan Hospital was allotted to the gurdwara committee for a charitable hospital. Giving it on lease to a private company is not appropriate.

The private company will not treat the patient on chartable basis, he added.
