MCD poll in for ‘faceless’ campaign
New Delhi, March 15 Just like the municipal elections in 2007, the Election Commission (EC) today said the municipal elections, which are to be held on April 15, would be bereft of hoardings and posters. Any violation may land the candidate behind bars for one year or can lead to a fine of Rs 50,000. Today, the EC held a meeting with the deputy commissioners of the Delhi government, MCD and the police to discuss the guidelines for strict implementation of the moral code of conduct and the steps to be taken for the conduct of free and fair elections. Election commissioner Rakesh Mehta said the meeting was to ensure a better coordination among the three agencies involved to ensure that there is no violation of the rules during the polls. "We laid down guidelines to ensure strict implementation of the moral code of conduct, which will come into play on March 19," said Mehta. Giving details of the code of conduct, Mehta said apart from banning all kinds of hoardings and posters in the run up to the elections, the use of loudspeakers would be regularised. "The candidates can use loudspeakers at a moderate volume only between 6 am to 10 pm," he said. During the election period, the sale and distribution of liquor will also be monitored with the help of the Delhi police. The city will be declared dry 48 hours prior to the polling. "We have decided to stop the sale of liquor 48 hours before the polling, which means that the dry hours will come into effect on the evening of March 13," he said. The State Election Commission has also set a cap of Rs 4 lakh per candidate for campaigning. Besides that, campaigning through print and electronic mediums will be regularised and misuse of vehicles will also be checked. "For campaigning through the electronic medium, the candidate will have to take permission from the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM)," added Mehta. |
Tourist info counters at airport metro stations
New Delhi, March 15 The Delhi tourism department has set up information counters at the New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium stations. Now, tourists will not have to deal with touts, as they can get all information related to tourist destinations at Metro stations itself. Further, there will be buses that will take travellers to tourist destinations in Delhi. Tourists can book their trips at the Metro stations itself. Visitors who wish to travel to places out of Delhi like Agra, Jaipur, Chadigarh, Manali etc. can also book tickets at the stations. "Tourists mostly reach Delhi either by trains or airlines. Reliance Metro is well connected with both the New Delhi railway station and the airport terminals because of which Delhi Tourism found Reliance Metro stations a suitable place to set up the counters," said a Reliance Metro spokesperson. — TNS |

Taps go dry as two plants shut
New Delhi, March 15 The level of ammonia in the raw Yamuna water, supplied from Haryana, has increased to above the permissible limit. The permissible level of ammonia in raw water is around 0.6 ppm (parts per million), according to a Delhi Jal Board official. Therefore, the treatment of water in the Wazirabad and Chandrawal plants was suspended at 6 am yesterday, he added. "The level of ammonia in Yamuna, which was expected to come down this morning, instead increased to 2.8 ppm (parts per million). So the plants remained closed," said the official. Most areas in central, south and west Delhi get water supply from these two water treatment plants. Following the closure of the plants, taps in these areas have gone dry. The DJB has requested the Haryana irrigation department to release additional water from the Munak barrage to dilute the concentration of pollutants in the river. The official said Haryana had already released some water from the barrage, which was expected to reach the Wazirabad barrage by tonight. "It is expected that treatment of water at both the plants will begin by tomorrow morning," the official said. The Delhi government had last year taken up the issue of Haryana releasing industrial effluents into the Yamuna with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). |
