45 saplings planted
: Shahid Bhagat Singh Educational Group observed the martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev with a blood donation camp and a tree plantation drive. As many as 40 units of blood were collected from student donors and 45 saplings were also planted on the occasion. Group MD Rajesh Bhardwaj spoke on the occasion.

Dal Khalsa hails martyr status
: Hailing the Akal Takht decision to accord martyr status to Dilawar Singh, the Dal Khalsa has asked Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh to take an initiative to install the portrait of Dilawar Singh at the Sikh Central Museum. The Dal Khalsa leaders, in a joint statement, said the decision to accord martyr status to both Dilawar Singh and Balwant Singh Rajoana was a welcome move. — TNS

Consumers lock LPG agency
: Angry customers locked an LPG agency at Tohana town in this district on Friday. The customers alleged that they had not been getting LPG supply despite standing in queues for several hours daily. Alleging serious irregularities in LPG supply, they demanded a probe into the functioning of the agency. The customers relented only after the local authorities assured that action would be taken in the matter.

3 held for robbing security guard
: The police has arrested three youths accused of robbing a security guard of his licensed double-barrel gun at pistol point near the Truck Union office here a few days ago. A police spokesman said the youths had been identified as Rakesh and Rajesh of Mittathal village of Bhiwani district and Yogesh of Majri Bhanda village in Alwar district in Rajasthan. He said the stolen gun, a country-made pistol, and a few cartridges had been recovered from them. They had confessed to stealing a tractor-trailer loaded with 400 bags of cement from Dadri earlier this month.

In-laws held under Dowry Act
: The police has arrested the husband and in-laws of a women, who has lodged an FIR against them under the Dowry Act. The women has alleged that after her marriage a year ago, her in-laws had started harassing her. Suspecting that she can be killed for not succumbing to their demands, she lodged an FIR. “A case under the Dowry Act has been registered and the culprits have been sent to the Almora jail,” said the police.

Motorcyclist killed
: A youth died and another was injured seriously after the motor bike that they were riding collided head on with a truck near the Levra bridge on Friday. Jaswant Singh, who was riding the bike, died on the spot while his friend was seriously injured. He has been admitted to a local hospital. The efforts are on to arrest the truck driver.

3 get imprisonment in molestation case
: District and Session Judge of Champawat has awarded imprisonment to three accused in a molestation case of a minor girl. One of the culprits has been awarded a 10 year imprisonment while the other two have been sentenced to two years of imprisonment. The case took place in 2009 at Koli Dhek in Champawat district. “A fine of Rs 5,000 has been levied on the two culprits and the court has established that on non-payment of the fine, the culprits will have to spend three more months in jail, “ said Sunil Kharkwal, DGC (criminal) in Champawat district.

Forest fires destroy 15 hectares of land
: The forest fires that broke out in the forests of the Hat range in Didihat has been put out by the department after much effort. The fire burnt more than 15 hectares of the forest area, KS Khati said here on Sunday. “We could check the fire from spreading further by applying cross fire system, “said a ranger.

Hospital gets Rs 32 lakh
: Nainital District Magistrate Nidhimani Tripathi has sanctioned Rs 32 lakh to Base Hospital at Haldwani for upgrading the facilities for the patients. The District Magistrate has also sanctioned Rs 5.5 lakh for the women's hospital at Nainital to upgrade the facilities. The money has been granted from local fund of the hospitals of which the District Magistrate is the chief of the management committee. The District Magistrate has emphasised cleanliness of the hospital and other sanitation works besides using the money in free medicines distribution network of the hospitals.

Plan to upgrade forest infrastructure: The Forest Department has prepared a plan for upgrading the forest infrastructure in the Terai region and the quality of the forest guard training in the region. “We have prepared a plan under which a forest guard will get a chance to be a forest ranger by training and qualifying the upgrade examination of the department,” said a forest officer, while adding that the government had sanctioned Rs 4 crore each for two forest training centres near Haldwani.
