‘Sans affiliation’, institute promises jobs to students
Jalandhar, February 10 Their motive: Students thus trained will be employed for a programme to create a database of citizens across the state on internet. While the Unique Identification (UID) programme already exists, the organisation insists that it will focus on Punjab to ensure better services to the people of the state. FCE is charging Rs 7,500 per student as security, refundable after a year of the two-year course. The FCE centres are already running in Kotkapura, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Batala and Dera Baba Nanak, the centre in Jalandhar started with the enrolment of 15 students on Wednesday. Talking to The Tribune, FCE director, manager and observer, Punjab, Gurpal Singh, said: “We work under the Planning Department of India and are affiliated to the Union Ministry of Information Technology. At least 22,000 students across the state are studying under our programme so far.” “We recently returned the securities of 350 students at Kotkapura and also offered scholarships to many students,” he claimed. When quizzed why state or the Central government announced the project, Gurpal said: “We do not want to involve politicians. When politicians issue statements regarding projects, the projects’ credibility suffers.”If the director’s claim of 22,000 students across Punjab is true, securities worth over Rs 16 crore have already been collected. Interestingly, even as the plan is to provide computer education, the district manager of the Jalandhar centre said they do not have any computer so far as they will first give theoretical education for six months to students. When contacted, Kavita Singh, Director, Department of Information Technology, Punjab, said she was not aware of any such project. Jalandhar DC Priyank Bharti, too, said he had no information about any such free computer education centre or a parallel plan to create an internet database for citizens of the district. Database for Punjab?

Jalandhar, February 10 Unlike most colleges where a teacher enters a class with an attendance register in hand, the teacher at LPU walks in with a laptop. The attendance is noted on web-enabled enterprise resource plan (ERP) software which in real time can be monitored by parents, if their wards have given them username and password. The teacher has to upload the lecture at least a day before he/she takes it so that the students come somewhat prepared. This also comes as an advantage for students, who have missed the lecture, for they do not need to run around fellow students and can easily download it from the net. In another step, students get assignments from teachers from the university log in. The assignments are completely paperless as these have to be attempted digitally and submitted in the same format on the teacher’s ID. Aman Mittal, assistant director, public relations, said: “We have evolved a system whereby students do not have to run around to take extra time from the teacher for clarification on any topic. Instead, they simply have to use the same software for taking time from the teacher. The teacher on the other hand will have to be present for the student at the time he/she fixes for the purpose.” He added: “Our complaint system is also web-based. In case a student has a complaint against his teacher, he can address it to a senior lecturer. If he still feels unconvinced, he can address it to the HoD.” LPU’s examination wing too has gone a step ahead as students need not apply for the detailed marks certificate and can download it from the university software. Mittal said students could even use the ERP for getting no dues clearance from library, downloading curriculum, datesheet, important notices and registration for placement programmes. He added that it was a boon for the students as well for they too could use it for their attendance, salary slips and sending appraisals. All on the campus
Unlike most other campuses, the LPU has its own shopping mall equipped with escalators, top-end saloons, mobile shops, grocery stores, banks, stationery shops and garment shops. Called the Student Academic Resource Centre, the authorities have offered free space to students for starting their own venture. The campus has its own fire brigade and a hospital with dental chair and surgeon, eye specialist and physiotherapist. There is an in-house sewage treatment plant. The campus now also has flat-type hostels wherein the students even have an option to cook own food in the kitchen after purchasing vegetables available from grocery store. There are several kiosks offered all kinds of food, including continental, Italian, South Indian, Gujarati and all kinds of vegetarian food. The D3 café in the hostel is equipped with LCD TV sets, besides arrangement for a separate birthday party hall. There are plans to have open air projector system wherein the students would be shown documentaries or movies every evening. Nothing sweet
The Lovely Group that started with a sweets shop is yet to open one in the campus. Foreign students who are fond of non-veg food also need to venture out for the purpose as the authorities allow only vegetarian food inside. Even as Valentine’s Day is around the corner, there are no florists on the campus and students will to go to markets in Phagwara or
Jalandhar.

Another mentally challenged girl
abandoned
Jalandhar, February 10 Just a day after a five-year-old was abandoned at the Civil Hospital, another mentally challenged girl was found outside the Nari Niketan late last night. The girl was spotted by members of the 1098 Childline team on duty at the Nari Niketan who provided her shelter for the night. The 11-year-old girl was not able to communicate with anyone. Team members said she wasn’t even able to do basic things like eat food without assistance. Team member Kulwant Nagra expressed remorse at the increasing trend of parents abandoning their mentally challenged children. “These children, if left on streets, cannot find their way back home and they cannot share their predicament with anyone. Since the time we found her, she has not spoken a word. It is very difficult to look for her parents,” Nagra said. While a DDR report was filed at Bhargo Camp, the Childline team also completed the legal proceedings with naib tehsildar (acting executive magistrate) Karandeep Singh Bhullar. The girl was shifted to Guru Nanak Anath Ashram at Rama Mandi. |
Ongoing construction work adds to commuter’s woes
Jalandhar, February 10 However, the construction work of the central verges has added to the woes of commuters as construction material has been dumped on the road which often hinders the smooth flow of traffic. Commuters say that as the construction work is being done in during the day, vehicles, especially two-wheeler riders can skid on the concrete and sand spilled on the road. Ramesh Bedi, a commuter, alleged that yesterday his bike skidded on the construction material as labourer engaged in construction suddenly arrived in front of his speeding bike on the cool road. Another commuter, Nitin Sharma, said that during night, the construction material is not visible on the road. This can lead to a fatal mishap. Kulwinder Singh, superintendent engineer, said footpaths, central verges and reflectors are being fixed on the 70-km stretch in the city. He said special care is being taken not to obstruct the traffic. Asked why the already erected dividers were razed, he said the old dividers were low in height hence people used to cross over them during peak traffic hours. Now, higher central verges are being erected so that people don't cross them and it would also minimise the chances of accidents, Singh said. |
