IIIT likely at Kapurthala
Jalandhar, February 6 The Central government will provide 50 per cent of the required Rs 128 crore for the public-private partnership project would. The Punjab government will offer its share in the form of land for the institute. The participating industry will fund the remaining 20 per cent. Principal Secretary, Technical Education, Suresh Kumar, who was on the PTU campus recently, took a round of the area and held deliberations on the issue with the staff of adjoining centres, including S Swaran Singh, Institute of Renewable Energy and Pushpa Gujral Science City. If the plans get materialised, the area can develop into an education hub with the PTU, Punjab Institute of Technology (PIT) and Punjab Institute of Management (PIM) already established in the area. Initially, the IIIT was to come up in a 50-acre vacant land of the Department of Industry at Focal Point in Kapurthala. Since the department is reportedly on a backfoot to offer the land, the deal has now come to the PTU to offer some 30 acres and acquire the remaining part from the two adjacent institutes. Department officials had also been contemplating on setting up the institute in Hoshiarpur where there is no prominent educational institute and is relatively more centrally located. The talks of the department with the leading industrialists there on getting land, however, have failed. Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar said: “The discussions are still in the preliminary stage. Let’s see how things materialise.” Regarding the industrial partner for the same, he said: “We had mooted the proposal. Just one business group from Punjab - Trident - has expressed the willingness to invest the money.” |

Jalandhar, February 6 Indian-origin British MP Virendra Sharma said, “Female foeticide and sex-determination test are banned in European countries, England, USA and Canada, and that is why women from these countries come to India for getting rid of female foetus.” He admitted that the sex determination test and female foeticide were illegal in India too. He said, “The law banning the sex-determination test and abortion of female foetus is not strict implemented in India.” However, the British MP refused to name any clinic involved in the sex-determination test and abortion of female foetus for foreign women. Hailing from Jalandhar, Virendra Sharma, said, “This is an open secret that several clinics in India are involved in the sex-determination test and abortion of female foetus.” Virendra Sharma said, “The representatives of a UK-based group, Jeena, recently visited several cities of India, including New Delhi, Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Jalandhar, and have collected evidence of such clinics and the group will soon publish a report in this regard.” Meanwhile, Jalandhar IMA president Dr Navjot Dahiya rubbishes British MP’s allegations. He said not even a single private clinic of Jalandhar was involved in the sex-determination test and abortion of female foetus. However, former president of the Punjab IMA Dr RK Vig did not rule out the possibility of involvement of some doctors in the sex-determination test and abortion of female foetus, despite ban. The IMA kept on spreading awareness among doctors against such illegal and immoral practices, he added. If any doctor was involved in such illegal and immoral practice, it was the duty of the government to take strict action against him, he added. Dr Dahiya and Dr Vig said, “The sex-determination test is not banned in several foreign countries as stated by the British MP.” |
