Disowned by ‘husband’, woman seeks justice
Jalandhar, February 2 Himanchali Yadav from Sundernagar has alleged that her husband, a city-based businessman, has turned her out of his home and now claims that he neither knows her nor the children. Her parents, who had arranged her marriage, have also refused to take the responsibility and refused to let her stay with them. With all the doors closed for her, she called the 1098 helpline, after which the city 1098 coordinators came to her rescue and took her to the local Sanjeevani home, where she is currently staying. Talking to The Tribune, Himanchali, who is well-educated and has degrees in MA Political Science and PGDCA, said, “I got married on 27 April, 2008. We stayed together till 2010. When I came back to Jalandhar after a trip to my parents’ house, he refused to take me in, saying he didn’t know us.” “My daughter was with me and I was pregnant with my son at that time,” she adds. “Following a case against my husband at the civil court at Sundernagar, a warrant was issued against him. I also complained against him at the local police station number 6 in April 2010,” she said. “The police had asked for proofs of the wedding. I deposited photographs and court documents at the police station in August 2011, but the case hasn’t been resolved. I have also sent applications to commissioner of police Gaurav Yadav,” she said. My husband stays at the local New Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar, but the police says that he cannot be found, she said. Himanchali’s husband Parmod Yadav said, “My name is not Parmod Yadav, it is Parmod Kumar Sharma. I don’t know the reason why the woman is calling me her husband. There are many crazy women doing such things. I am a Ludhiana resident and my wife and children are with me. My wife is from Gorakhpur, the village I belong to.” Kewal Krishan, SHO, police station number 6, said, “No such case has come to my notice, but we will search out the application and see what can be done about the issue.” Navjot Mahal, ADCP, headquarters, said, “I am not aware of the issue, but we will look into the matter.” Guarav Yadav, Commissioner of Police, could not be contacted. |
Auto drivers violate traffic rules, authorities mum
Jalandhar, February 2 The drivers, in violation of the rules, overload their vehicles. They make children sit on the front seats along with the auto driver. In yesterday’s accident, the deceased was sitting next to the driver’s seat. When the auto collided with a mini-truck, the child fell down and was crushed. The errant mini-truck driver, due to whose negligence the 10-year-old was killed, is still out of police’s net. Sources said majority of the autos ferry schoolchildren without having any permit. They added that the city has more than 10,000 autorickshaws. A majority of the autos are engaged in carrying schoolchildren. Despite unbridled violations, the transport department and traffic police is not dealing sternly with the violators. Traffic official Gurdeep Singh said, “We have been dealing with the violators sternly and even challaned them.” He claimed that 18 autos were challaned yesterday, while 15 were challaned today for violating traffic rules, including overloading, lack of documents and passengers sitting along with the auto driver on the front seat. However, the officials were not able to provide the details of the overloaded autos challaned by them. As per the rules, an auto can ferry six or five passengers at a time, but the drivers usually carry more than 10 passengers or schoolchildren at a time. Autorickshaw drivers do not adhere to other safety guidelines. Majority of the autos carrying school children have not even erected safety grills and are without indicators. |

Jalandhar, February 2 Developed at a cost of nearly Rs 18 lakh by an industrialist of the area, Shivani Sharma Park has become the biggest attraction for the fitness freaks in the city. The young and the old visit the park every morning and evening and like to walk or jog on the twin paths of the park - one made of concrete and the other is a kutcha track (for those who complain of knee pain). The park has other attractions like beautiful landscaping, fountains, low fancy lights, canopies, sculptures and benches for those wanting to relax. While speakers for playing soft music have already been fitted, the electricity connection for the purpose however is awaited. The MC already had a park in the same area about six years back, but it was later dug up to give way to the proposed parking lot. The shopkeepers of the area supported by Congress leader Manoj Arora knocked the doors of the court to save the park and eventually won the case. The park remained dug up for quite sometime. Later, the proposal by Sudarshan Sharma, owner of HR International, on redoing the park was accepted by the MC. The name of the park stands in the name of his deceased daughter Shivani Sharma, who used to stroll in the same park. In almost a year’s time, the park is now lush green with plantations of various sorts. The park also has private security till 10 pm just to ensure that there are no anti-social elements making any misuse. Area councillor Aruna Arora said the boundary wall of the park had been pushed inwards by 15 feet to make space for parking of cars around it to partly solve the problem. She added that a high mask light had been put outside the park by the MC as a twin advantage for those coming to the market as well as the park. |

Residents living under threat of high-tension wires
Jalandhar, February 2 The incident which feared residents of the Gurunanak Pura locality is death of 56-year-old Jeet Ram, who died of electrocution when he came in contact with the high-tension wires. Arpita, a resident of the locality, said due to fear of electrocution, they prevent their children from playing at the rooftops. For precautionary purposes, they have rolled rubber or plastic pipes on the wires. “Is the power department waiting for another incident?” she said. Women residents of Kota Ram Dass alleged that few months ago, they had had requested higher officials of the Powercom to shift wires from their rooftops. “The officials told us that to shift the high-tension wires to some other place, locality members will have to pay the required fee,” they said, adding how could a middle-class family shell out thousands of rupees. The high-tension wires at the rooftop of Dilbag Singh’s residence are making him and his family members anxious about their security. “We had apprised the higher authorities many times, but to no avail,” Singh alleged. Powercom sources said it was not possible to shift the high-tension wires until residents pay the required fee, adding that the Powercom had not deliberately laid such wires, but the wires were present before construction of the residential colonies. |
