Education dept reshuffle raises eyebrows
Chandigarh, February 2
The move of the UT education department to virtually transform one of the two posts of Deputy Director Adult Education into that of “mini DPI” has raised many eyebrows.

Fire dept issues notice to GMSH

20 firms sealed
Chandigarh, February 2
The Special Investigating Team of the UT police has sealed 20 immigration firms in the city in a case of work permit fraud. As per the police case, the companies had been sending aspirants abroad on work permit visa without obtaining licence from the Protector of Emigrants, Chandigarh.

After largely ignoring immigration firms that had been duping gullible work permit visa seekers all these years, the police seems to have suddenly woken up to check the menace by booking 20 immigration firms while leaving others scot-free.

In a major demolition drive, the fourth storey of a hotel, GK President at Attawa in Sector 42 here, was demolished by the enforcement department of the municipal corporation (MC) today. The enforcement team also demolished other parts of the building which had violations.
The drive was carried out for five hours by engineers of the road, building and enforcement wings.

Another witness turns hostile
Chandigarh, February 2
In yet another blow to the prosecution, another witness in the rape-on-wheels case turned hostile today and retracted from her statements given to the police. The Chandigarh Police had registered a case against former UT Home Secretary and top Haryana-cadre IAS officer NK Jain and others in 2002. Six witnesses had already turned hostile during the proceedings.

Grant still awaited
Chandigarh, February 2
With just three weeks to go for the Rose Festival, the municipal corporation (MC) is yet to get the grant of between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 20 lakh from the Union Ministry of Tourism for organising the event.

CHB’s annual budget — Rs 354
Chandigarh, February 2
The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) has set aside Rs 354 crore as its annual budget for the next fiscal, with which it envisages to kick off new projects, mainly the general housing scheme at Sectors 53, 54, 55 and 26, Maloya and Dhanas.

Cremation ground bone of contention between GMADA, allottees
Mohali, February 2
A cremation ground of Sohana village in Sector 77 has become a bone of contention between the villagers and allottee of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) plots. Reason, the authority will physically get the site verified carved out over a dozen plots on the cremation ground.

Development of science and technology seemed to be last on the UT’s priority list in 2011. It managed to spend only 2.9 per cent of the total budget (Plan) of Rs 17.17 crore allotted to the UT Science and Technology Department during this financial year.

PGI union for CBI probe

The PGI Employees Union has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the issue of not depositing the EPF amount of 650 contract workers of the PGI by the principal employer.

Inspector dead

An Inspector posted at the CRPF camp in Pinjore died under mysterious circumstances today. According to information, Inspector Kuldeep Singh (52), was found dead in his room.

25 colleges fooled PU committees

Over 25 affiliated colleges of Panjab University (PU) have been found guilty of fooling inspection and affiliation committees for quite some time now. This startling fact, which is bound to land many in trouble, was brought to the fore in the recent Syndicate meeting, where it was revealed that the colleges with lack of enough faculty had managed to get affiliation for many new courses.

VC misused powers, alleges Chatrath
Chandigarh, February 2
The controversy surrounding the constitution of various academic committees refuses to die down. A day after heated exchanges in the syndicate and Vice-Chancellor RC Sobti registering his reservations on the way the Chatrath group made these committees, GK Chatrath yesterday lashed back at the VC, saying that the House had acted according to the calendar and Sobti himself was responsible for being stripped of the powers to make committees.

PUTA opposes science city
Chandigarh, February 2
Reacting to the Syndicate giving a go-ahead in principle to science city at PU, the Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA), in a letter to the Vice-Chancellor, has urged him not to impose his ambitious plans on teachers and students. Claiming that the project would end up transforming it to a tourist attraction, the association has demanded a feasibility report on the same.

Expel traitors, says Cong candidate

Kuljeet Singh Nagra, Congress candidate from Fatehgarh Sahib Assembly constituency has demanded the expulsion of those Congress leaders, who worked against the interest of the party in the Assembly elections by supporting the PPP and SAD candidates. He said these leaders had lost the moral right to be called Congressmen as they proved to be traitors.

Pvt schools oppose Haryana order
Ambala, February 2
The Federation of Private Schools in a meeting here today opposed the order of the Haryana education department in which it directed the public and private schools of the state to admit 25 per cent students of economical weaker section (EWS) of their total strength in their institutions without charging any fees and funds from them. Around 150 schools participated in the meeting.

A view of the second-hand book market at Sector 15 in Chandigarh. The second-hand book market near the Sector-15 petrol station is here to stay. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has slammed shut the chapter of its shifting to a new location.
Dismissing the petition against the current location of the kiosks, offering rare and contemporary books, the high court has asserted that the Administration has not “committed any error in granting the sites for the resettlement of booksellers”.

Youths booked for assaulting ASI, women
Mohali, February 2
The Mohali police today booked Inderjit Singh along with other youths who had allegedly assaulted a Punjab police official and women of the area. The case was registered on the complaint of Devinder Singh, a resident of Phase X.

Dhanas man nabbed with liquor
Chandigarh, February 2
The local police arrested Amar Nath of Dhanas from the village and recovered 20 quarters of ‘marka’ (countrymade liquor) from his possession. A case under  Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act was registered at the Sector-11 police station.

Continuing their winning spree, the host handball team of Panjab University (PU) defeated MGSU, Bikaner, in the quarterfinals of the All-India Inter-University Inter-Zonal Handball Championship for Men, being held at the PU grounds, here today. In the quarterfinals, PU thrashed the visiting side 52-36. In other matches, Kurukshetra University overcame MDU, Rohtak, 43-34, MG Kashi Vidyapith defeated Rajasthan University 25-22 and LNUPE, Gwalior, beat Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, 39-36

North Zone team manager
Chandigarh, February 2
A spokesperson of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), Sushil Kapoor, has been appointed manager of the North Zone cricket team. The team will face East Zone in the Duleep Trophy semifinal match at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium in Delhi from February 4 to 7.

Making a name in roller skating

Turning his father’s dream into reality, Rohit Bajaj, student of a local college, has made a name in roller skating.
