Passports of 70 NRIs impounded for deserting wives
Jalandhar, February 8 Regional Passport Officer (RPO) Perneet Singh said these passports had been impounded during the past 10 months since the setting up of a special Women Grievances Cell (WGC) here in March last year. According to information, as many as 250 complaints have been received against NRIs at the Women Grievances Cell of the RPO since March last year. Perneet Singh said the passports of only those NRIs were impounded against whom their wives had also lodged FIRs of cheating under Section 420 of the IPC. The RPO said “After getting a complaint along with proof of her marriage from a woman at the WGC, we first ask her to get an FIR registered against her husband. We insist the woman to get the FIR registered as sometimes we initiate the process of impounding her husband’s passport, but meanwhile they reach at a compromise.” “Subsequently, a show-cause notice is issued to the NRI husband at his Indian address. We wait for a reply from him for about a fortnight, following which we give instructions to all the Indian embassies and national as well as international airports about confiscating the NRI’s passport,” he added. Perneet Singh said, “The impounding of passports has proved a deterrent to the erring NRIs. Further several NRIs have agreed to take along their wives after impounding of their passports.” “As many as five erring NRIs were given their passports back after impounding them as their wives submitted their applications at the WGC for withdrawing of their complaints as their husbands had mend their ways,” he added. The WGC is working only at the Jalandhar RPO out of the total 37 passport offices located in various parts of the country. Perneet Singh had decided to set up the WGC here after reports that a number of NRIs hailing from various parts of Punjab had deserted their wives. |
20 challaned for smoking at public places
Jalandhar, February 8 The teams challaned as many as 20 persons across the city. Majority of the bidi and cigarette smokers were caught off guards, because they had so far thought smoking was their birth right. Many expressed disbelief at being challaned because they heard it for the first time that a person could also be challaned for smoking at a public place. The raids were carried out under the Anti-Tobacco Act-2005 and those challaned were fined Rs 100 to Rs 200 for indulging in smoking at a public place. Prominent public places in the city, like the railway station, bus stand and tehsil complex were also raided. The drive was carried out as a part of the health authorities’ plan envisaged during the World Cancer Day. Raids were conducted by a team, comprising District Health Officer Dr RL Bassan, Drug Inspector Jaijaikar Singh, Food Health Officer Sukhrao Singh and Surinder Saini from NGO Child Help. Speaking on the issue, District Health Officer RL Bassan said, “Our tobacco task forces raided the crowded areas of the city under the Anti-Tobacco Act. It is a really dangerous trend and can cause a lot of harm not just to the smoker, but people around him, giving rise to many diseases. The drive is our attempt to discourage people from smoking and playing with their lives. While today we carried out raids, we also plan to carry out more drives near schools, colleges and religious places.” Surinder Saini from Child Help said, “People in the city are not aware of the ban on smoking at public places. Most of them looked at us in disbelief as we conducted the raids. The most bothersome aspect was that children were also found consuming tobacco products. During the raids we came across a little boy having zarda. In fact, it’s the adults who make them indulge in such practices. Since many of those apprehended didn’t even have money, some were let off after charging nominal fine from them.” A child labourer was also found during the raids, according to team members, but he reportedly ran away. |

Prisoners pledge to
give up drugs
Kapurthala, February 8 Taking pledge by the prisoners is significant as the undertrials (most of them drug addicts) became violent after the death of an ailing inmate due to lack of proper care on November 19 last year. The prisoners also urged the jail authorities to get them treated for leaving drug addiction. Shashi Kant assured the prisoners that they would get proper treatment for paving the way for giving up drugs. The DGP also directed the jail authorities to make adequate arrangements for their treatment. Shashi Kant said that over 60 per cent youths in the state had become drug addicts. Stressing the requirement of checking this menace for saving the young generation, the DGP also stated that there was need of the hour to set up drug de-addiction centre at the modern jail at Theh Kanjla as most of the prisoners were drug addicts. Speaking about the nightmarish experience during violence by undertrials after the death of an ailing inmate due to lack of his proper care and subsequent firing by the policemen to control them on November 19 last year, he appreciated the role of the Health Department for treating the drug addict prisoners. Traffic jams on old city roads a routine affair
Jalandhar, February 8 While narrow roads are one of the main reasons for traffic jams here, the problem is further aggravated as the shopkeepers have made temporary encroachment on the roads. Sources said there are only three proper parking lots near Narinder Cinema, PNB Chowk and Milap Chowk. Beside these three permanent parking places, eight roads have been identified and are used as parking area. However, all this is not sufficient for the Jalandhar residents. As a result, they are left with no option but to park their vehicles haphazardly, which creates hindrance in smooth flow of traffic.
Further, the traffic police deployed here are too less. Currently, there are only 142 traffic police in the Jalandhar Commissionerate, that too less than the sanctioned posts of 146. The 146 posts were sanctioned in 1982, when the city population was only seven lakh. Today, the city population is 12 lakh. Assistant Commissioner of Police (traffic) Bhagwant Singh Gill said, “The traffic police is doing its best to tackle the issue despite lesser number of police.” ACP (traffic) also said, “Several steps have been taken to check the snarl-up at Mai Hiran Gate and Jail Road. Entry of vehicles bigger than a jeep has been banned from 8am to 8pm at Mai Hiran Gate.” Two sub-inspectors, one assistant sub-inspector and 24 constables have been deployed at the Mai Hiran Gate and Jail Road to control the traffic jam, he said adding that yellow line, indicating parking area, has been drawn at Jail while it was not possible to mark Mai Hiran Gate area. Gill also said, “The traffic police also challan wrongly parked vehicles. As many as 27,216 wrongly parked vehicles have been challaned in the past two years.” ACP (Traffic) further stated he had already written to MCJ Commissioner to provide more parking lots. “I have also raised the issues of paucity of proper parking lot in the city in the recent meeting presided over by DC Priyank Bharti regarding traffic. Also it is the duty of MCJ to take action against errant shop-keepers and rehriwallas for making temporary encroachments on the roads,” he added. When contacted MCJ Assistant Commissioner DP Bhardwaj said, “Eleven more areas have been identified as parking lots.” Bhardwaj also said MCJ keeps on launching operation along with traffic police against shop-keepers and rehriwallas from time to time. |
Youths disrupt traffic, chased away by police
Jalandhar, February 8 The police initially asked the youths to stop the music and not to disturb the traffic flow. Despite the warnings the youths continued the music and created disturbance, said police. Inspector Somnath, Bhargo Camp police station, said majority of the youths were in an inebriated condition and were arguing with the police when they asked them to stop the nuisance. The youths did not have the permission to install DJ system on the road. Few even hurled empty bottles and stones at police, he added. They were then dispelled by the police. Inspector said they have also impounded some equipment of the DJ system but no one has claimed them yet. No case has been registered so far against the youths.
