A city resident returns home disappointed following strike Stir by e-sampark staff hits residents
Chandigarh, February 10
Thousands of city residents were inconvenienced as the staff of the e-sampark and gram sampark centres went on an unscheduled strike today. As a result, no routine public service facility was available for the residents at 13 e-samparks centres in the city and gram samparks in villages.

Punjab for ‘unified command of police’ for tricity

The State of Punjab today gave its nod for a “unified command of police” for the Tricity of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali for investigating cases of serious nature, murder and kidnapping included.

Policeman suspended for obeying EC order

A sub-inspector (SI) of the Punjab Police has paid a heavy price for diligently obeying orders of the Election Commission (EC) to check all vehicles, private and official, for unaccounted cash and liquor in the run-up to the Punjab Assembly elections.

3 duped in immigration frauds
Chandigarh, February 10
The UT police has registered three separate cases under the Immigration Act today. In the first case, a Chandigarh Police constable was duped of Rs 12 lakh. Constable Dalbir Singh submitted Rs 12 lakh, in four instalments, to one Charanjit Singh who promised to send him abroad. Charanjit Singh, who is absconding, has been identified as a resident of sector 40. The complainant Dalbir is a resident of police society in sector 51.The case was registered at the police station in sector 34.

Quake jolts tricity
Chandigarh, February 10
An earthquake of moderate intensity shook the tricity about half an hour past Thursday midnight. The quake, measuring 5 on the Richter scale, hit parts of Punjab and Haryana and Uttarakhand. The epicentre of the quake was stated to be in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand and was also felt in many parts of the northern region. However, there were, however, no reports of loss of life or property from anywhere in Punjab and Haryana.

2 water pipes burst

A water pipe today burst at Sector 17 around 9 am here today. The water kept leaking till afternoon leading to water logging on the road. With the damage yet to be fixed, drinking water from the breached pipe continued to flood the area well past the evening. Earlier, during the day, the MC staff began the work by dewatering the area before assessing the damage.

The municipal corporation (MC) today expressed its willingness to add the ingredient of reasonableness in the foodstuff offered at the night food street.

Four foot overbridges for Mohali
Mohali, February 10
Now, the residents of Mohali would be able to use foot over-bridges to cross the 3.5km long sections of the recently widened arterial-road passing through Phases IV, V, III-B1, III-B2 and VII of Mohali. A total of four such foot over-bridges are being erected on the road section.

DAV College student held for petrol pump clash
Chandiagrh, February 10
Two months after the bloody attack at a petrol pump in sector 10, the police today arrested Chetan Munjal, a SOPU member, and student of DAV College. Munjal was wanted for attempted murder. He was allegedly involved in a brawl that took place on December 9 at the Sector 10 petrol pump and was booked for criminal intimidation and voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons under sections 147, 148, 149, 324, 307, 506, IPC, in Sector 3 police station.

PU grants provisional recognition to Ankur School
Chandiagrh, February 10
Following a week-long controversy, the Ankur School in sector 14, Panjab University, has finally received provisional recognition from the UT education department here today. District Education Officer Ram Kumar granted the recognition emphasising the fact that the school was now bound to abide by the Right Of children to Free and Cumpolsary Education Act, and will have to reserve 25 per cent of its seats for students from the economically weaker sections of the society.

High-power jammer to come up at Ambala jail
Ambala, February 10
The Haryana jail department is seriously planning to install a high power jammer in the Ambala Central Jail at Ambala City. The move has come after the recovery of 13 mobile phones and a number of SIM cards from the jail inmates, here last month. The Ambala Central Jail is the most sensitive jail of the state where a number of gangsters and hardcore criminals are lodged. Earlier, too mobile phones and SIM cards were recovered from the prisoners.

Overloaded autos a common sight in Patiala

Despite the Punjab and Haryana High Court coming down heavily on the overloading of auto rickshaws, especially the ones ferrying school children, the practice continues unabated in the city. Overloaded auto-rickshaws are a common sight in Patiala. Despite the ruling that the drivers should not accommodate more than three persons at a time, one can see autos openly flouting the rule.

Goods worth Rs 50 lakh gutted

Gift items, hosiery goods, leather products etc worth lakhs were burnt to ashes when a major fire broke out in a general store at Sahnewal last night. No loss of life was however reported.

3 of family booked under dowry Act

The UT police has registered a case under sections of the dowry Act against a family at Sector 45. Acting on the complaint of Tamana Puri, the police has registered a case against her husband Ashish Sood, father-in-law Rajesh Sood and mother-in-law Kamlesh.

Cyclist dies in accident
Chandigarh, February 10
A day after three persons died in accidents in the city, another fatal accident was reported in the city. A cyclist died as he was hit by a speeding recovery van on the Sector 9-4 turn past night.

3 commit suicide in city
Chandigarh, February 10
Three city residents allegedly committed suicide in three separate incidents here today. In the first case, 35-year-old Parwinder Singh, said to be mentally challenged, hanged himself at his Sector-37 residence. He hanged himself from the ceiling fan inside his room. A suicide note was recovered from the spot, which held no one responsible for the extreme step. He had been taking treatment from the GMCH, Sector 32, for the past five years.

Three thefts reported
Chandigarh, February 10
Three cases of theft have been reported in the city today. In the first case, Renu a resident of Pinjore, reported that her bag containing cash Rs 1700, ATM card, four gold ear rings, gold mangalsutra, one gold chain, and PAN card, was stolen from counter number 24, New OPD, PGI, on February 9. A case under section 379, IPC, has been registered in Sector 11. In the second case, complainant Pushpinder Pal, resident of Sector 7, reported that someone had stolen taps and fittings from Sector-19-B on the night of February 8. A case under section 380, IPC, has been registered.

Employee goes missing with Rs 5 lakh
Mohali, February 10
The police has booked Mandeep Kumar, an employee of a Bhagwati Steel Industry on the charges of criminal breach of trust on the complaint of Mahinder Pal, an owner of the Bhagwati Steel Industry, B-10, Industrial Area, Phase-1.

Vishwamitra wins relay race

The boys of Vishwamitra House won the relay race for Class IX at The Gurukul’s annual inter-house sports meet here today. The meet opened with the ceremonial march past of the four houses, namely Dronacharya, Bhrigu, Vishwamitra, and Parashar at Tau Devi Lal Stadium. It was followed by the finals of various athletics events, flat races of 100m and 200m for all categories, 4x100m relay for seniors, and obstacle races.
