Girl pressing for marriage killed by boyfriend
New Delhi, July 22 According to the police, the incident was reported on June 29 at the Khajuri Khas police station when Abdul Aziz reported that his daughter had been missing for four days. According to SK Jain, DCP (NE), initially the case was totally blind but the police came to know that the girl was last seen riding pillion on a motor cycle with Gulfam, who lives in her neighbourhood. "Initially, he tried to mislead the police by giving different versions, but on sustained examination, he broke down and spilled the beans. He confessed to his involvement in the kidnapping and murder of the girl after taking her in the area of Simbhawali, Ghaziabad," said Jain. Gulfam said he had been in a relationship with the girl for the eight months and even took her to the dargah at Ajmer about a month back. But, he never wanted to marry her as she belonged to a lower stratum of society in comparison to his own social background. However, the girl had been pressing him for marriage. "Gulfam's further said when the girl came to know about her boyfriend's ensuing engagement, she threatened to expose his relationship withher to his would-be wife. As he didn't want to marry her, he hatched a plan to eliminate her," said Jain. As per the plan, he purchased a carving knife, used to cut meat, the day before the incident and called the girl next day to elope with her. He took her to Ghaziabad and on the way to a sugarcane field he slit her neck with the knife. The weapon of offence, motor cycle used in the crime, blood stained clothes and wallet of the accused have been seized. The accused belongs to middle class family and has recently passed his Class XII exams. His father runs the business of nickel polish in area of Gamri, New Usmanpur. |
Noida villagers clamour for 5% developed land
Noida, July 22 Around a hundred villagers assembled at sector 128 and stopped the work. "Our land was acquired in 2003. The private builder had promised the development of the village, but nothing has been done. Moreover, he has blocked several road links of the village. Around 100 bigha land was unauthorisedly grabbed by the company," said villagers. They said even after eight years of land acquisition, the authority has not given them the 5 per cent developed land. Farmers said they will allow work only after getting the developed land. They also claimed that they were paid a very low
compensation. Meanwhile, their agitation continued at sector 74 today. Though the authority chairman urged them to wait for a fortnight for the solution, the farmers refused to lift the dharna. At Greater Noida too, more villages are holding panchayats and deciding to move the high court. The chief executive officer of Greater Noida and other senior officials met the farmers to see how the impasse can be ended and development work started. Authority officials claimed that they have invested over Rs 4,500 crore in the development of the area. A bridge over the Hindon river and a highway connecting Greater Noida to Ghaziabad have been developed. Another 130-meter-wide expressway from Noida Extension till Jevar, the proposed airport site, has been planned and the work started. Meanwhile, Noida Extension Flat Owners' Welfare Association has filed more applications in the Allahabad High Court, with a plea to be heard by the court before it decides any case related to Noida Extension. |
15-20% rise in flu-like fevers in Delhi
New Delhi, July 22 In the monsoon, moist conditions serve the perfect recipe for viruses
and bacteria to thrive and hence experts warn people to keep off roadside food. "There has been a significant increase in patients walking to hospitals with cough, sore throat, bodyache and running nose and these are all cases of influenza-like diseases-malaria, dengue, H1N1, etc. In comparison to the last year, there has been a 15-20 per cent jump this year," said microbiologist Dr Narendra Saini. During the rainy season, when there is an abundance of water due to poor sanitation, incidence of gastrointestinal diseases also goes up and at the city hospitals, the OPDs have started witnessing long queues, said a doctor from the medicine department at Safdarjung Hospital. Though the tertiary healthcare centres, such as All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Safdarjung Hospital and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital haven't recorded a major high, as confirmed by senior doctors, experts maintain that cases of water-borne diseases have increased with many turning up at the local physician's clinic. Unclean surroundings offer a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other microorganisms, and also lead to contamination of drinking water. Even the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has declared in its latest data that 10 per cent of the total sampled water in Delhi is unfit for drinking. "Apart from viral infections, warm and humid atmosphere increases the risk of food-borne illnesses because the heat helps bacteria that can cause Salmonella and E. coli
to multiply quickly," said Dr Saini. "We have seen an increasing number of patients coming to us with stomachache, vomiting and these are the cases of typhoid, diarrhoea and jaundice," said senior consultant Dr R S
Mishra at the internal medicine department of Max Hospital. Experts advise avoiding roadside food and washing fruit and vegetables properly before eating. "In the monsoon, hospitals see an increase in water-borne diseases. Consuming clean water and healthy food would keep these diseases away," said Dr P K Mishra, who is a senior gastrointestinal surgeon at G B Pant Hospital. "Say no to cut food and salads on the roadside. They are a sure haven for microbes. Also avoid eating food that is kept outside and always take water that is boiled or at least filtered. Washing hands before eating is essential," stressed Dr Saini, member of Global Hygiene Council. |
Training children to become storytellers
New Delhi, July 22 As many as 250 students from 20 schools of Delhi and NCR participated in the competition. Some of the institutes were Delhi Public School Mathura Road, Amity International School Mayur Vihar, St. Mary's School Safdarjung Enclave and Cambridge School at Indrapuram. The students had selected the topics to write the stories. The awards were categorized into four groups: Cheshta (classes IV-V), Utsaah (classes VI-VII), Jumbish (classes VII-VIII) and Udgaar (classes IX-X). Itihaas started this practice last year to enrich young minds by breaking down their barriers and erasing their prejudices. While doing this, they train these children to become storytellers, thereby giving them the responsibility of imparting knowledge to others. It also makes these children act as "catalysts", so that others can emulate them, said founder director of Itihaas, Smita Vats. One of its initiatives is the writer's forum, Anveshan, which was launched in 2010. At the awards ceremony, Smita said, "Initially, schools would ask us if we were historians and if we could teach children. We said that every home has history and we wanted to bring back stories to the children." Itihaas was created because the organization felt that children were becoming "tourists" in their own country. It has conducted several study tours for school students in various historical locations of Delhi. Some of the tours were based on themes such as "Lal Qila", "Understanding Gandhi", "1857 in Delhi" and "Humayun's Tomb". |

Water in basement may damage hospital
New Delhi, July 22 A water-boosting pump has been installed, but it has no effect. On the condition of anonymity, workers said that a few of them also fell ill due to mosquito bites. They took this correspondent inside the building to show the level of water stagnant in the basement. They said that the confrontation between the ruling party in Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee and the opposition is the cause of the poor condition of the building which was constructed by the late Baba Harbans Singh who died a few years ago. Later, the building was handed over to a private company to start the hospital which became the cause of confrontation. The work was stopped midway. They said that Baba Harbans Singh had planned a 200-bedded hospital funded by the Sikh community. The hospital was named after the eighth Guru Harkishan Singh who was cremated on the premises of Gurdwara Bala Sahib on April 16, 1664. On the issue of seepage, DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna said he had installed a booster pump there which is operated round the clock. "I have consulted with the experts who said that seepage would be stopped after the rainy season. Some repair work is required in the basement that would be done once the rain is stopped and ground water level goes down." |
Trifurcation will hamper development of Delhi: Mayor
New Delhi, July 22 She said the proposal was not financially viable. "The division will adversely affect equitable distribution of resources among three corporations, leading to unequal development. So, the proposal needs to be approached with due consideration," she said. Prof Abbi said the trifurcating MCD was unparalleled not only in India, but also in the entire world. Nowadays, there is a trend in major cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad to give greater autonomy and powers to the municipal corporations. The Mayor has reiterated that the proposed municipal corporations will not be financially viable as currently the entire income of the civic body is equally divided for the equitable development in the city. "It needs to be underlined that the two zones of the MCD in the trans-Yamuna area contribute 10 per cent of the income from the property tax, whereas over one third of the Delhi's population lives there," she said. The largest zone of the MCD, Najafgarh, contributes 2.97 per cent of the income and the second largest Narela contributes 2.12 per cent. "In the present set-up, the imbalance in income is taken care of by pooling together of the entire income of the MCD in one kitty and spending it as per needs of the area. However, in the proposed set-up, one or two corporations will flourish while the rest will always look up to the state government for more financial support. This is bound to affect the balanced development process," she added. "In fact, when Mamta Banerjee won the West Bengal election, the first major decision she took was to give more powers to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. We have not come across any city anywhere in the country which has three municipalities within the territorial jurisdiction of a single city. It is a unique proposal and has to be approached with due care and consideration," said Prof Abbi. |
