Youth shot at, another stabbed in group clash

In the latest incident of lawlessness plaguing the city, a young man was shot at while another sustained stab wounds following a clash between two groups in the Upkar Nagar locality.

And, many young lovers prefer to commit suicide rather than be separated from their partners.

Local kiln owners selling bricks at a premium

While there are no restrictions on transportation of bricks within or from outside Punjab, provided taxes including VAT have been paid, a group of the city’s brick kiln owners is said to be resorting to arm twisting methods to force customers to buy locally made bricks at higher prices. Ironically, certain officials of the excise & taxation department and even the police have been reportedly complicit in this unlawful activity.

Show-cause notices by PPCB
Ludhiana, July 22
Claiming that they had already purchased land for setting up of the proposed common effluent treatment plant (CETP) and orders had already been placed for the equipment and machinery required for effluent treatment, the Bahadurke Textile and Knitwear Association today said that the delay was being caused by the government itself in granting environment clearance to the project. The civil works for the CETP could not be taken in hand until the green clearance was given by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.

Seminar on natural disasters
A district-level seminar on facing natural calamities was organised for heads of various departments in the district administration at Bachat Bhawan recently. Experts of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Public Administration gave training on facing natural calamities like earthquake, floods, fire and lightening. TS Gill, district coordinator for disaster management, said main aim of the workshop was to minimise loss of lives and property in the face of calamities.
