Fourteen enthusiastic Congress councillors of the municipal corporation (MC), led by Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh, were in for a rude shock when the Congress-appointed UT Administrator-cum-Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil told them to resign if they could not get MC officers to implement development works.

Foreign travel despite orders to impound passport

The Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Chandigarh is faced with a piquant situation. Despite initiating impound proceedings as far as three years ago against a liquor contractor for having a criminal case pending against him and not disclosing the same while obtaining a ‘tatkal’ passport, the liquor contractor continues to not only possess the passport, but has even travelled abroad several times.

Utter confusion prevailed at an otherwise scheduled weekly morning parade, comprising 300 cops, at the police lines today, with neither UT SSP Naunihal Singh nor UT SSP (Traffic and Security) HS Doon turning up to take the salute.

Rajpal gets Arjuna Award

It was a joyous moment for the family of local hockey star Rajpal Singh, as he was bestowed with the Arjuna Award here today. “It was a proud moment for us,” said the mother of ace hockey player after she heard the news of his son getting the highest award in the world of Indian sports.

47 structures razed

The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) today demolished 47 illegal structures at Lambian village amid protest by shopkeepers. The enforcement staff led by estate officer Balbir Singh prevailed over the protestors and the drive continued for two hours.

Failure of a contractor to start work of repairing and recarpeting roads has cost him dear as the Panchkula Municipal Council has terminated his contract. The MC had allotted the work to the contractor in December 2010, but roads in the town were still in poor condition.

PIL filed against cattle menace

Seeking directions to the UT Administration, the Municipal Corporation and also to the UT police, to take all necessary steps to effectively deal with stray cattle menace, a Panchkula-based couple filed public interest litigation in the Chandigarh district court here today. Similar kind of application was also filed in the Panchkula court by the same couple in which they sought directions to the Panchkula administration, MC and the police department.

No space to play, admn has the answer

Children who have no place to play and are utilising roads and parks for the same have a ray of hope as the UT Administration is planning to offer the playgrounds and coaches in government schools after schools hours.

Enrolment camp for smart cards

The UT Food and Supplies Department would organise an enrolment camp for the above poverty line (APL), below poverty line (BPL) and Antoyada Ann Yojana (AAY) beneficiaries of some colonies to provide them smart cards at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 52, on July 23 onwards here.

No uniformity in readmission of failed candidates

An odd case of a student who failed to clear all five subjects in the first-year BCA (bachelor of computer applications) examination and later sought readmission at DAV College, Sector 10 on the basis of his class 12 merit list results has brought to the surface the customary practice of private colleges denying admission to failed candidates despite RTE norms being in place.

Mohali gets six ambulances

The health department in Mohali has acquired six new ambulances. For obtaining the services, just dial 108.
The development is significant as the district witnesses a large number of roads accidents on the highways. Now the residents will get access to free of cost ambulance service in case of any emergency, especially the accident victims, in the district.

2 bogies of goods train derail
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 22
Two bogies of a goods train derailed today afternoon at the railway yard of the Sirhind railway station. However, there was no casualty or any disruption of railway traffic. A departmental inquiry has been initiated in this regard.

Co-accused in builder suicide case denied bail
Panchkula, July 22
After rejecting the anticipatory bail application of Rajiv Goyal, chairman & MD of the Surya Group of Institutes, Rajpura, a local court on Friday dismissed the bail application of Rajhans Thukral, the co-accused in the case pertaining to the suicide by a Panchkula-based builder, Ramesh Gupta.

CBI special judge Ritu Tagore today dismissed the anticipatory bail application of Dr Sameer Kumar Patel, an accused in multi-crore PGI doctor’s admission scam. Dr Patel had filed his anticipatory bail application on July 6 after his name had figured in the admission scam.

The UT Food and Supplies Department today lodged an FIR against Satbir Singh, owner of Deep Bakeries in Mani Majra, for flouting rules.

Hotelier kidnapped, set afire, critical
Panchkula, July 22
A Panchkula hotelier was allegedly kidnapped by around half a dozen youths from Sector 22 in Chandigarh yesterday. They set him on fire near Basaulan village in Pinjore in the evening.

7-yr-old crushed to death
Panchkula, July 22
A seven-year-old boy was crushed to death under a tractor-trolley at the Raipur Rani bus stand this evening. The deceased, identified as Bishpal, was killed on the spot.

Clerk booked for attempting to bribe PCS officer

The police has booked a clerk of the district welfare office, Ludhiana, Manmohan Singh, for allegedly attempting to bribe the director of department of welfare SC/BC, Punjab, Indu Mishra, a PCS officer, at her residence in Sector 19.

2 held with truck bearing fake registration plate

The police arrested two Ludhiana residents with a truck bearing a fake registration number plate. Sources said recovery agents of the company from where the truck was financed informed the police of the truck bearing fake number plate.

The crime branch of the Chandigarh Police today cracked down the theft case committed by driver of Randhir Sood and recovered cash worth Rs 9.15 lakh and another stolen documents from his possession.
On July 19, Randhir Sood lodged a complaint with the police that his driver hailing from Nepal, Tara Chand fled away with a briefcase carrying cash about Rs 11 lakh, along with important documents.

Millennium School win laurels
Mohali, July 22
Millennium School, Mohali, won laurels during the Mohali zonal sports tournament organised by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) from July 19 to 21 here. In the boys’ under-17 carrom event, Sushant Chadha, Manveer Singh, Sidharth Sharma and Mandeep Singh Chadha won the first position, whereas in the boys’ under-17 chess event, Sukhman Sharma, Inderpreet Singh Chakal, Akshit Juneja, Sankalp Sharma and Arshay Khajaik won the second place.
