Engineer held for murder, extortion
New Delhi, July 15 According to the police, Bikramjit Singh was arrested red handed two days ago from near GPO, Gole Market, while trying to flee after collecting extortion amount from the businessman. "Bikramjit wanted to get rid of his former girlfriend's fiancée who was earning double than what he was getting. So, in order to hire criminals for the same, he planned to extort money from a soft target. However, since he failed to get a mobile connection on fake identity to make extortion call, he killed a woman, mother of two schoolchildren, for her mobile in the Burari area. Later, he used this phone to make extortion call and we managed to arrest him after laying a trap," said Ashok Chand, DCP (crime). He had demanded Rs 15 lakh from a businessman by claiming to be working for under world don "Hussain" and identified himself as Sultan. After confiding with the police, the complainant was asked to call the extortionist at an appointed place and a bag containing fake currency notes was given to him following which the police arrested him. During interrogation he said he did his BTech in electronics and communication from IP University and since 2006 was working as information technology analyst on a salary package of Rs 7 lakh per annum with TATA Consultancy Services at Gurgaon. While working there he fell in love with his colleague, but eight months back she dumped him for another colleague who was junior to Bikramjit and whose package was hiked to Rs 15 lakh. "He felt humiliated by this and became emotionally disturbed and planned to eliminate her fiancée. He needed money to procure a weapon and for obtaining professional criminal help for eliminating the fiancée. He identified a businessman residing in his locality as soft target to extort money and needed a mobile phone to make extortion calls. For this, he killed Renu, who was known to accused," said Chand. After killing her, he decamped with her mobile and made the extortion call which ultimately led to his arrest. The phone and the SIM card robbed from the lady have been recovered from his possession. |
Cop dies in accidental firing
Faridabad, July 15 Two persons Arvind and Ram Badan, who boarded the bus at Madanpur Khadar village in Delhi, were injured as they were hit by the pellets from the bullet. They were admitted to Badshah Khan Civil Hospital and stated to be out of danger. The bus started from Inter-State Bus Terminal, Delhi, and was headed to Madhya Pradesh. According to Arvind, the incident occurred about 15 minutes after he and his nephew boarded the bus to Mathura. Sulekha, a female passenger in the bus, said the passengers were jolted by the sudden deafening sound. Even before any could know anything the personnel had collapsed. He was hit on the head. There are, however, contrary versions regarding the incident which has muddied the water as to whether it was a case of suicide or the gun went off accidentally. Arvind said the personnel fired the gun purposefully on his own body. However, his nephew said he was trying to clean the gun when it went off. Faridabad DCP (crime) Kuldeep Singh said the matter was under investigation. The police would get in touch with the Chhattisgarh police and the relatives of the deceased in Madhya Pradesh. The body has been brought to BK Hospital for the post mortem. The incident created panic in the bus. The driver stopped the bus at Old Faridabad Chowk after the incident. |
Portions of 14 illegal properties demolished
New Delhi, July 15 The areas where these actions were taken include Sriniwaspuri, Okhla Industrial Area, Phase-II, in central zones and Rani Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and Bunkar Colony in Rohini Zone. Of the 14 properties, the sealing action was carried out in one property in Okhla Industrial Area, Phase-II. These actions were carried out by the Building Department, MCD, with the help of the police. "After taking the action, the properties were left in uninhabitable condition so that these are not used by the occupants. Most of the properties, which were targeted by us, belong to the builder mafia who construct properties illegally and sell them off to people," said a senior MCD official. "We will continue this drive and action will be taken against more illegal constructions," he said. The properties with a room constructed on the terrace or balcony or converted the parking into an office space, etc. without permission will also have to face strict action, said the MCD officials. The commercial establishments running from the residential areas without paying any conversion and parking charges are also on the anvil of the civic agency as it is planning to initiate sealing action against them. |
Spurious drugs seized, 3 held
New Delhi, July 15 According to Ashok Chand, DCP (crime), the police has seized medicines worth more than Rs 24 lakh and unearthed a manufacturing plant with machines worth more than Rs 30 lakh in Faridabad (Haryana). On a tip-off, Daya Shankar Misra (55), Dinesh Sahu (52) and Moti Lal (35) were arrested from Old Delhi Railway Station on Monday. According to the DCP, the police seized a huge quantity of spurious medicines from them. During interrogation, Misra said he ran an illegal drug manufacturing unit in Faridabad. "His employee Motilal ran the unit for him. His unit produced medicines illegally. He and Sahu also procured spurious medicines from Sanjiv Garg of Noida," said Chand. The police seized the manufacturing unit at Faridabad. Moti Lal was subsequently arrested on Wednesday from Faridabad. According to rough estimates, the accused supplied spurious medicines worth more than Rs 8 crore in Delhi and other states in the last five years. |
Dy Speaker told to raze illegal construction
New Delhi, July 15 The order was delivered on May 30, 2011, against a complaint filed by one Preeti Behn. She had lodged a complaint before the Lokayukta that there was unauthorized construction in the Deputy Speaker's property located in the resettlement colony in Khichripur. The complaint was based on a report given by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi that there was unauthorized construction of 109.74 square meters without any sanctioned building plan. Delivering judgment, the Lokayukta, Justice Manmohan Sarin in his order, said, "There is no blanket protection provided under section 2 (m) (iii) of the Delhi Lokayukta and Uplokayukta Act 1995 to the Speaker or Deputy Speaker from inquiry under the Act. The protection is given only to the President, Governors and Raj Pramukh of the states by the article 361 (2) and (3) of the Constitution of India." The order said, "This forum had also inquired from the respondent whether he was willing to give an undertaking that he would get the portion regularized as may be permissible under the Master Plan 2021 and have the non-compoundable portion demolished." He said the preliminary objection of the respondent that he is beyond the jurisdiction of the Lokayukta has no merit and his application is thus dismissed. |
Ice cream vendor held for killing another vendor
New Delhi, July 15 During the course of investigation, it is revealed that Sheeshpal was also an ice cream vendor who was employed by one Jaswant Singh, an ice cream trader. Sheeshpal works as a tailor in a readymade garments factory during daytime and in the evening from 6 to midnight, he used to sell ice cream on a cart. "At night, he used to stay at an ice cream store in H- Block, Sangam Vihar. About two months ago, his employer Jaswant Singh noticed that Sheeshpal was involved in stealing ice creams from the store. He was then sacked. Jaswant Singh gave his store to Ashok," said a senior police official. Thereafter Sheeshpal was forced to live in a rented house, but he was allowed to purchase ice creams from Jaswant Singh's store and sell them. Ashok and other vendors called him a thief at times. "On the fateful night of July 7, Sheeshpal found Ashok having drinks. He also shared a peg or two. Thereafter, Sheeshpal asked Ashok to give him an ice cream, but Ashok refused and abused him. Sheeshpal then went ballistic and hit him on his head with a small empty gas cylinder lying nearby. When he fell down, Sheeshpal picked up a pump which was also lying there and beat him brutally till he died," added the official. |
Two die in road mishaps
New Delhi, July 15 In the first incident, a four-year-old girl was crushed to death by an UP Roadways bus while she was crossing road with her mother in the Anand Vihar ISBT area around 12 noon. "She came under the wheels of the bus plying between Delhi and Hapur. The bus driver, Shiv Prakash, has been arrested and the bus has been impounded," said the officer. The girl was rushed to LBS Hospital where she was declared brought dead. Sonam had come from Jalaun (UP) with her mother Kasturi Devi to meet some relative in Delhi. In another incident, Maksood (19) was run over by a DTC bus plying on route number 944 in the Mangolpuri area of outer district this morning. According to the police, Maksood was on his way to work on his scooter when the incident took place. "He was rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The errant driver has been arrested. |
Neighbour killed over abduction bid
New Delhi, July 15 According to the police, the incident was reported from the Aman Vihar area of outer Delhi and the accused has been identified as Rajesh. The body of Ram Sewak, alias Neta, has been sent to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital for post mortem. According to information, Ram lived with his wife in the Aman Vihar area. His wife had left him few months ago. "Ram's wife was close to a girl who lived in their neighbourhood and he suspected that she knew where his wife was. So, today he went to the girl's house and forcibly tried to take her with him shouting that she would stay with him till his wife returned. Rajesh has been arrested. |
‘Authority can’t enjoy dual advantage under land Act’
Noida, July 15 The court of Justice Sibghat Ullah Khan observed that the Authority cannot be permitted to take advantage of the beneficial part of each of the two provisions, i.e. taking possession under Land Acquisition Act and denying compensation under UPZA & LR Act. After 21 years of petition filed by the Hindon River Sahkari Awas Samiti, the Allahabad High Court in the first week of July directed the Authority to pay compensation of the entire acquired land of the petitioner society. Earlier, the society was denied compensation as the state government had taken over the possession of extra land under Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition & Land & Reforms Act (UPZA & LR Act). The case of the petitioner was that it had more than 300 members and all the members had been allotted plots of land admeasuring 266, 400, 500 and 1000 square yards. About 50% of the land purchased by the society was used for roads, park, school, post office, etc. |

29 child labourers rescued from Nangloi
New Delhi, July 15 While most of these children were trafficked from Bihar's Chhapra, Darbhanga, Samastipur and Madhubani districts and West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, two were from Nepal who became victims to the false promises of local traffickers of their villages. Two children from Nepal said, "We were brought to Delhi by an uncle who told our parents that he would make us study and at the same time work. But we are only working and not studying. It's already more than three months and we have no contacts with our parents. We want to go home as soon as we can." All of them were confined to the job site and had to toil for 14-15 hours a day. Due to exertion and inhuman working conditions, many of them were in bad health, said the officials of the rescue team. During the rescue operation, five premises have been sealed and two employers arrested. They would be produced before the Child Welfare Committee, said an official. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has ordered the Delhi government to recover the fine of Rs 20,000 and also file a status report on rehabilitation of around 1,500 children. As in the absence of proper rehabilitation mechanism, there is an increased chance of children falling into the viscous circle of trafficking again, said BBA chairperson R.S.

Dikshit inaugurates school

New Delhi, July 15 The government is providing uniform, books and education free at cost to girls up to Class XII apart from mid-day meal. The students of SC/ST are also being sanctioned scholarship. She said with opening of new building, the students would have a better atmosphere conducive to education. The building has been constructed with Rs 157 lakh within a 15-month time. The double-storey building has come up over an area of 5,635 square metre. Dikshit congratulated students, teachers and residents on dedication of the new building. This is a double shift school, where the first shift is for the girls and the second for the boys. She stressed upon the need of proper maintenance of the new building. With an aim to properly maintain the assets, including infrastructure, the government has decided to make special budget provision for maintenance. Dikshit referred to the ongoing problems in PDS as the entitled families have not been getting their due wheat and rice. Perhaps, black-marketing is going on. The government will not allow this to happen. Further, the city government is mooting a new system of PDS. She also referred to the election of the restructured MCD which will provide 50 per cent reservation of seats to women. She expressed concern over the incidents of female foeticide and referred to the success story of Ladli Scheme. |
