CWG Scam
Bhanot’s bail plea rejected

New Delhi, July 5
The Delhi High Court today rejected the bail plea of former Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organising Committee (OC) secretary general Lalit Bhanot, arrested for alleged irregularities in a deal with a Swiss firm for the mega sporting event last year. "I find no merit in the bail application moved by accused Bhanot, therefore, his bail application is dismissed," Justice Mukta Gupta said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Bhanot and former OC director general VK Verma on February 23.

Both were arrested for alleged irregularities in awarding a Rs107-crore contract to Switzerland-based firm Swiss Timing Ltd for procuring a timing, scoring and result (TSR) equipment for the Games.

The CBI registered a case against the two under penal provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act for cheating, criminal conspiracy and violations of various sections. The firm was also booked.

Bhanot moved his bail plea saying the CBI added harsher penal provision of forgery of valuable security against him at a later stage to seek more time to file the chargesheet.

He said the probe agency should have filed the chargesheet within 60 days of his arrest.

Counsel for the CBI said the probe was still going on.

"The petitioner is not entitled to grant of bail in view of Section 167 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Code (not filing of chargesheet within the statutory period of 60 days from arrest)," said the court.

Former OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi and two other officials were also arrested in the same case on April 25. They are lodged in Tihar Jail. — IANS

New Delhi, July 5
The Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijay Malhotra today castigated the Discoms for proposing a levy of Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000 on customers due to increase in load and threatening to disconnect their electricity if extra charges are not paid.

Malhotra alleged that there are 35 lakh power connections in Delhi and if this plan succeeded, the Discoms would collect thousands of crores as extra revenue.

He said that the Chief Minister has supported the distribution companies after the privatization of power.

"On the one hand, Sheila Dikshit makes DERC aware of her views on the tariff increase and on the other, BSES has already sent notices to consumers in its area to deposit thousands of rupees for the increase in load," said Malhotra.

Malhotra has asked the Lt-Governor to ensure that Dikshit refrains from interfering in the functioning of DERC. She must also issue directions for the withdrawal of notices sent to consumers by BSES, he said.
