Upset over newly sworn in Health Minister Satpal Gosain ordering the removal of his predecessor Laxmi Kanta Chawla's pictures from highway ambulances, the latter today expressed bitterness against the party buddy's move. Chawla, now Child Welfare and Social Security Minister, who was in the city today, could not contain her disappointment when she said, ‘‘By that measure all new governments should demolish foundation stones laid by previous governments.’’

The meritorious students seeking admission to BCom I, whose names came on top in the merit lists prepared by Panjab University, Chandigarh, have preferred other “best” colleges in Chandigarh and Delhi over the city colleges. As per data available with leading city colleges, the students coming on top in the lists did not even report at the respective colleges on the first day of BCom I admissions.

Industry to face weekly power cuts again

In a move that smacks of confusion over electricity supply availability, Punjab State Power Corp Ltd (PSPCL) has once again imposed compulsory weekly power cuts on industry beginning July 6, which will continue for an indefinite period. A few weeks ago the state-run utility had rolled back similar scheduled cuts only after two days after they were announced.

Girls increasingly getting hooked on the hookah

Abusing pain relieving balm containing iodine and cough syrups, smoking cigarettes and drinking gin or vodka to relieve tedium has become passé among the fairer sex. A growing number of “Generation Next” girls are now getting their highs off hookah smoking in which the tobacco used is totally distinct from that of cigarettes. This fact came to the fore following a joint operation by health department officials and the police at some of the city’s major hookah joints on Monday night

Drug abuse rife among kids in juvenile home

If you think the drug menace only existed in the Central Jail then you have got it wrong. The fact that many of the children lodged in the city’s juvenile home who have become addicted to habit forming substances is giving sleepless nights to officials running the institution. Perturbed over the increasing number of cases of drugs being supplied in the juvenile home, they had to ban food being brought in by the children’s parents.

BCom admissions leave students confused
Ludhiana, July 5
Students with their parents wait to get their forms checked on the first day of BCom admissions in Ludhiana on Tuesday. Adhering to the guidelines by Panjab University, Chandigarh, BCom admissions began in various city colleges today. A huge rush of students was witnessed in various city colleges. Though city colleges and students had to follow the merit list posted online by PU, confusion prevailed among students over the choice of colleges.

26-yr-old gets Shiksha Rattan Award

PAU scientists give tips to farm women for monsoon

Harjiwan Kaur, a student of Khalsa College for Women, has secured third position in Panjab University, Chandigarh, and has stood first in Ludhiana in BSc III biotechnology, the results of which were declared today.

MC demolishes three shops, elevator
Ludhiana, July 5
A portion of a building in Gian Singh Rarewala Market, which was demolished by MC officials, at Ludhiana on Tuesday. Taking action against illegal buildings in the city, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) officials demolished an under construction elevator near Gian Singh Rarewala Market and three under construction shops on the Barewal road today. In all these cases, the owners had not taken permission from the civic body for these constructions.

‘2 illegal structures could be put to use’

In the meeting of the Municipal Corporation’s monitoring committee against encroachments, it was proposed by the Municipal Town Planner (MTP) Hemant Batra that the two rooms constructed inside a park near Sunet village should be put to optimum use instead of demolishing them.

Poetry books released

In the monthly meeting of the Punjabi Likhari Sabha, Rampur, on Tuesday, two books of poetry, authored by Surinder Kaur Binner were released. The books entitled “Tere Jaan Pichhon” and “Ik Khat Tere Naam” are collections of poems by the poetess.

‘Free ride’ gang robs two women of jewellery

The “free ride” gang comprising women robbers is active again. In the latest incident the gang members fled with gold ornaments worth lakhs of rupees by robbing two women on the pretext of offering them a ride in BRS Nagar and Sarabha Nagar.


80 turn up for swimming trials
Aspirants during the swimming trials held at PAU in Ludhiana on Tuesday. Ludhiana, July 5
Over 80 aspirants turned up to attend the trials conducted by the District Swimming Association, Ludhiana (DSAL), at the Punjab Agricultural University swimming pool here today. The selection panel constituted by DSAL, headed by its president Apinder Singh Grewal conducted the trials.
