A small world of love and bonding at Tihar
19 women and their 12 children from Pakistan lodged in the jail are members of Messiah Foundation International

New Delhi, July 16
Thirty-one inmates of Tihar Jails, 19 women and their 12 children, have built their own little world of love and bonding within the confines of sub jail-6 (women's jail). They all hail from Pakistan.

Although not averse to interacting within anyone, these women and their children prefer to confine themselves within their own cells. All educated and from well-to-do families, these women themselves have even chosen to teach their children rather then entrusting them to a crèche where 49 children of other jail inmates are looked after.

According to Shaista Gohar (34) from Multan, they have nothing against the crèche or the teachers, but just feel that they can teach their children better.

"Besides, 12 children themselves constitute a little crèche," added Shaista when asked about the reason for not sending their children to the crèche.

Dr Ruby Gupta, a counsellor at the crèche, said, "They are all very decent women and even their children are well mannered. I have never heard anyone speaking ill of them."

These 19 women are members of Messiah Foundation International (MFI), a spiritual organisation established under the guidance of His Holiness Ra Riaz Gohar Shahi to promote his (Gohar's) philosophy of Divine Love.

According to Shaista, hundreds of MFI members have been prosecuted under blasphemy laws in Pakistan and when they too were hounded by hardliners, they fled to India seeking asylum in 2007. However, when the Indian authorities tried to deport them back, these women, part of 65-member group (34 males), burnt their passports at Jantar Mantar, leading to their arrest and jail.

"We are not Muslims. We do not offer namaz or read the Koran. Our religion is Divine Love or Prem Dharma. The religion stands for promotion of divine love and world peace, reduction of hatred and universal brotherhood," insisted Shaista when asked about the new religion and how it's different from Islam.

According to Anisa (28) from Rawalpindi, if they had stayed back in Pakistan, they would have been killed.

"We were born into the Muslim families, but we believe in the teachings of Prem Dharma, something not tolerated in Pakistan," said Anisa.

The duo expressed disappointment at the Indian government's decision on not granting them asylum.

"We truly believe that in India everyone has the freedom to pursue any religion. We are disappointed at not being granted asylum here," said Shaista.

When asked as to how they look upon their stay in Tihar for four years, both the women said that they have never been harassed by anyone.

"The authorities have been kind and have put us together in the far corner of a ward where we have some privacy and can teach our kids and follow our faith. After all, we are not criminals," said Anisa, adding that they do talk about their religion Divine Love with other inmates. While some like it, others ignore it.

Their case is presently with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) which is working to find a suitable country, ready to offer them asylum.

"Although everything is fine, jail is a jail and we are expecting a better tomorrow," expressed Shaista.

MCD not ready for rainy season
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 16
Even a short spell of rain in the city today made commuting difficult for the people due to water-logging which exposed the civic body's lack of preparation for the rainy days.

With monsoon season yet to get in its full swing, several areas across the city gets flooded even in a short duration of rain and the agencies receive numerous complaints related to water-logging, overflowing drains and felling of trees on roads.

Over the past few days the control rooms of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been registering more than 50 complaints on an average during the rain from across its zones. Many of them are about fallen trees leading to road-blocking in areas such as Pitampura, Rohini, Sarita Vihar, Kalkaji and Narayana Vihar.

However, according to senior MCD officers, the MCD has already deputed additional teams of officers and sanitation workers in the city, keeping the monsoon in mind. They said the process of de-silting of drains was carried out throughout the year now.

"We have been de-silting drains and have taken other precautionary measures so that people have a smooth rainy season," said a senior MCD official.

The MCD has earlier said that it has also identified the roads where there are more chances of water-logging and trees uprooting during strong winds. "The more chances of tree-felling remains in the places where there are maximum concrete areas. We will identify these, but also take steps to ensure greenery is maintained," said the official.

Up till now, areas like Inderpuri, Najafgarh, Narela, Rohini, Malviya Nagar, Madan Gir, Ber Sarai, Rajouri Garden, Vikaspuri, Janakpuri and Punjabi Bagh, have received most of the complaints of flooding incidents.

Decade-long suffering ends as Nigerian operated upon for plastic bullet

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 16
After 10 years of nightmare, 51-year-old Morufu Shuaibu of Nigeria is now a relieved man thanks to a multidisciplinary team of doctors at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital where he was operated late last month for the plastic bullet that had been the cause of intense pain to him.

According to the treating doctors of the private hospital, the case is quite unheard of in the medical history that bullet has been lying in the body for a decade resulting in a huge lump.

It all happened 10 years ago when the patient suffered a bullet injury in his left leg and following which he underwent an operation back in Nigeria. Some pellets were removed and he was subsequently discharged.

But to Morufu's bad luck, some part of the plastic bullet remained even after the treatment and he continued to be asymptomatic up to a year back when he suddenly started having swelling and pain in his left thigh.

This brought him to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi after several local doctors there failed to figure out the cause, he said.

"I was leading a normal life till a year ago. Suddenly, I suffered shooting pain in my left thigh. The pain worsened whenever I ran or walked for longer duration. After a while, even my legs started aching. I developed a large, hard lump in the thigh and later had some foul smelling discharge," Dr Gulati.

Senior orthopaedic surgeon at Apollo, Dr Yash Gulati who performed the surgery on Morufu, confirmed, "When the patient came to the hospital, the infection had aggravated. He had developed numbness in the lower limb. He was evaluated and planned for exploration and removal of the mass where we found a plastic bullet shell embedded in the left thigh."

According to Dr Gulati, who was surprised to find the two-inch-long plastic bullet, the bullet was missed by X-ray and other tests at the earlier centres. After a detailed investigation, the cause of the pain in the patient's leg was ascertained.

"Morufu is recovering and has been discharged from the hospital. He is now absolutely fit, but would have to come for a regular follow-up for a couple of weeks. He will now be able to lead a normal pain-free life," said Dr Yash Gulati.

This burglar himself cries for police

It is not every day that a criminal is relieved to see cops arriving at the spot they have targeted. However, one such incident was witnessed by the PCR cops recently when a burglar rushed to them and fell on their feet.

The incident relates to a burglary attempt in the Mahipalpur area where three friends broke open the locks of a mobile shop in the wee hours of Friday morning. Unfortunately for them, some of the locals saw their activity and alerted others. While two of them managed to escape, one of the burglars was caught by the people and beaten black and blue. When he realized that he would be killed by the beatings, the burglar shouted for someone to call the police.

Someone obliged and when a PCR team arrived on the scene, the victim fell on their feet and begged to be saved by the mob. He was later admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment.

Radio-savvy Mayor

Delhi Mayor Prof. Rajni Abbi has recently used the radio, urging people to take safety measures in view of the diseases such as dengue, chickenguniya and help the MCD in checking the menace.

She was often heard talking on radio. Though she feels that direct interaction with people will have more impact, speaking on radio and TV channels has different charm.

A senior official of the MCD said that the Mayor was quite happy, saying that it was the beginning and in the future, more such announcements would be made on radio and TV.

Not only the Mayor, other politicians in the corporation also prefer TV and radio journalists to those working with the print media, the official said.

Health officials on their toes Health officials in the Delhi government are on their toes just after the NHRC has issued a notice: how did a woman deliver a baby outside Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini? She died from excess bleeding afterwards.

Health minister A K Walia had meetings with senior officials of the department. He directed the principal secretary to visit the five hospitals of the Delhi government to check the conduct of doctors and the actual conditions being faced by the patients and their attendants.

He also directed that all the patients should be properly registered. They are often seen standing in long queues in the government hospitals and by 11 am, the registration is closed.
