Compensation Row Swap them with arrested leader Parmindar Singh
Greater Noida, February 19 The officers kidnapped were deputy chief executive officer R.K. Singh and deputy collector S.P. Singh. They had gone to Dankore for negotiating land compensation with farmers when they were kidnapped. The police had last night arrested the leader of the agitating farmers, Manvir Singh Tevati, and some other agitating farmers after they turned violent when the police tried to frisk them to see if they were carrying arms. "The kidnapped officers were released by farmers around 5 am today after the police released the arrested farmers," said a police officer. Meanwhile, leaders from various political parties assembled at Bhatta Parsol village and extended support to the agitating farmers. Taking into account the sensitive situation, the district administration has deployed additional police force, converting the village into a cantonment. This has been done to prevent further clash. Farmers, on the other hand, are scared now as they feel what they did was wrong and the administration may retaliate and eliminate the leaders in encounters. |
Jilted lover stabs girl, her friend
New Delhi, February 19 According to the police, the incident was reported around 7 am from flat number 142-C of Gautam Vihar. The accused, Shankar Thapa, is on the run and the injured women-- Virginia (24) and Adrelene (23) -- have been admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital with wounds on the chest and shoulder. According to the police, Thapa and Virginia, both natives of the Northeast, had been in a relationship for five years and studying medicine. "They had returned from abroad a few months ago after completing a medical course and were in the city to prepare for the Medical Council of India (MCI) examination due later this year. They along with Virginia's friend Adrelene
used to live in rented accommodation. “However, some time back, differences arose between the couple and Virginia asked Thapa to leave the house. Angered over this, this morning, Thapa attacked both the girls with a kitchen knife," said a police official, adding that the girls received cuts. According to him, Thapa had left the house two days ago, and came to the flat this morning to pick up his belongings. He tried to reason with Virginia, requesting her to bury the hatchet. But when she refused, he attacked her with a kitchen knife twice. Hearing her cries, Adrelene rushed to help Virginia, but Shankar attacked her too. He then escaped, leaving behind the bleeding girls. The girls then called the police who took them for first aid. A case in this regard has been registered with the Hauz Khas police station and efforts are on to nab Shankar Thapa. |

New building of DCWA medical centre opens
New Delhi, February 19 "The building has come up in a record time of over eight months. It is a feat for the organisation," said Nariman, who inaugurated the new extension. Having a humble beginning, the clinic, which started under a tree in Zamrudpur village, with an aim to provide medical aid to the poor, especially those in the slums, has gradually expanded its reach and touched Gurgaon through camps and workshops. Currently, the social service organisation's medical centre runs due to voluntary donations from charitable organisations and support of nearly 500 members, comprising people from India and Commonwealth nations. At the occasion, among others present were the first doctor of the makeshift clinic Dr Saroj Oberoi and Amarjit Bhagwant, the oldest member of DCWA. "Close to 1,00,000 patients are attended by a panel of 40 specialists and doctors, who work on a voluntary basis each month. The organisation carries medical camps on and off and runs mobile van service for various areas like Sangam Vihar, Nizamuddin," said chairperson of the DCWA's building committee Bapsi Nariman. Besides offering medical facilities, virtually free of charge, the DCWA has also taken up educational activities in the form of pre-school for poor children. Since its inception in 1952, the social service organisation has focused on many other areas like empowering the domestic women by apprising them of hygiene, healthcare, family planning, HIV/AIDS, etc. It is also in the process of expanding its vocational programmes and for this the land adjoining the centre has been sanctioned by the Lt-Governor of Delhi recently, added Bapsi. |
Police commissioner to hold ‘janta darbar’on weekdays
New Delhi, February 19 Gupta told reporters today that he had been meeting people regularly and wanted to make it a daily exercise. The police is for the people and the officers should ensure that they take out time to listen to their grievances, he said, adding that it would help to improve the functioning of the police. The 'janta darbar' would allow the common man to put across his grievances to the police directly and help create transparency, officials said. Though all senior police officials, including the commissioner, even now have fixed timings during which they meet the public in their offices, many complainants return disappointed as the policy is not practiced rigidly. An initiative by the police chief could go a long way in ensuring that field officials meet the public. The deputy commissioners of police, assistant commissioners and other senior officials have also been asked by the commissioner to meet complainants for two hours on the weekdays. Gupta admitted that he was not meeting the public everyday, but insisted that he would do it henceforth. "I would not be giving any appointment during this time. It would be open for the masses. I will make sure that I spend 90 minutes with them," he said. He said people came to the headquarters to meet senior officials because they believed it would expedite their case and help them get justice. If he met them, he said, the people would return with the satisfaction that they met the police chief and presented their case before him. |
‘Fire gang’ chief held
New Delhi, February 19 Sanju, who has recently turned 18, has been caught by the police several times in the past but since he was a juvenile he would easily escape from the juvenile homes and get on with his burglaries. According to HGS Dhaliwal, DCP (south), Sanju was arrested this morning from near Ganda Nala picket, Pilanji village, when he along with another boy tried to run away after seeing the police. "Their behaviour alerted the police officials on the picket and they chased them and succeeded in apprehending Sanju after running for 100 metres. He was interrogated at length and he admitted to his involvement in several cases of burglary, including the recent case of Laxmi Bai Nagar," said Dhaliwal. Sanju is head of the 'fire gang' of criminals who have committed a series of burglaries in various parts of Delhi. This group targets houses of government officials and set them on fire after committing burglary. |
Realtor shot
New Delhi, February 19 According to the police, the victim has been identified as Zubair, a resident of Indira Enclave. "Zubair worked as a property dealer and was walking home when four persons on two bikes accosted him. They shot him from point-blank range and after firing around five rounds, escaped from the spot. Zubair was rushed to hospital, but was declared to have been brought dead," said a police official, adding that a shot in the head proved fatal. The preliminary investigation has revealed that the bikers did not attempt to rob Zubair as his wallet, watch and other valuable things were found intact on him. "It seems to be a case of business or personal rivalry as nothing was taken from the victim. We are speaking with the family and friends of the deceased and would surely nab the culprits very soon," said a police official. |

CM: Wake up to domestic violence
New Delhi, February 19 The campaign is being organised by a global human rights organisation called Breakthrough. "Bell Bajao" will reach people through video vans that will engage and educate communities on the need to prevent domestic violence, and will also spread awareness about the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. The van, with its distinctive audio-visual screenings of the "Bell Bajao" will be accompanied by street theatre performances, puppet shows, opinion polls, interactive games and flyers. "We cannot function in isolation and all of us must take the responsibility to curb this menace of domestic violence against women,” the Chief Minister said. An aware and sensitive neighbourhood is the best watchdog to prevent domestic violence, said Dikshit. The Chief Minister added, “This campaign is an attempt to achieve this purpose and I hope that it will change the mindset of the community towards domestic violence and make the members of the society more
responsible." |
Vector-borne diseases
New Delhi, February 19 The workshop focussed on the need for greater public participation and better coordination among various agencies of the government for effective tackling of these diseases. A large number of representatives from the Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) took part in the workshop. Dr VK Monga, chairman of the Medical Relief and Public Health Committee, MCD, highlighted the need for more coordination among various agencies of the government. He said awareness among people about the causes, symptoms, prevention, and control of these diseases hold the main key while dealing with these. "The role of the RWAs and the NGOs become prominent in sensitising people about these diseases. Spread of diseases like malaria, dengue and chikungunya in the national Capital is a curse, so the government, along with the citizens, must work together to completely eradicate the menace," said Monga. MCD commissioner KS Mehra said the best way to tackle vector-borne diseases was to not allow water accumulation in our neighbourhood. Mehra said, "If small things like proper cleaning and non-accumulation of water in the vicinity are taken care of, the occurrence of these diseases could be avoided. He, however, said all the MCD hospitals had better facilities to treat these diseases. Municipal health officer Dr NK Yadav said the aim of the workshop was to work out a plan in partnership with the NGOs and the RWAs to tackle dengue and malaria. He also asked people to coordinate with the government's efforts in the prevention and control of these diseases. The MCD implements strategies for prevention and control of vector-borne diseases in areas under its jurisdiction as per the guidelines envisaged under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP). Delhi reported 6,259 cases of dengue in 2010, while 3,366 cases in 2006. More than 10,000 dengue cases were reported in 1996 and as many as 2,853 cases in 2003. |
When a policeman on duty asks you if Sehwag has completed his century or not, you know the World Cup fever has finally gripped the nation. The reporters calling up police officials on Saturday to get details of one case or another were often asked about the latest on the inaugural India-Bangladesh match. And the fact that Delhi boys, Sehwag and Virat Kohli, were stealing the show with their batting prowess in Dhaka only added to their curiosity. Cops could be seen stopping by the shops to check out scores and some enthusiasts did not mind enquiring about the match from the occupants of cars at traffic lights. It was cricket all the way at the police headquarters as well with scribes and cops enjoying the run fest together. Airport line set
for opening
If all goes well, the much-delayed Airport Express Metro line will open next week after the deployment of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) for its security is completed by this weekend. Like most of the things with the Metro, the management has been able to meet the deadline. On February 4, the home ministry had decided to hand CISF the responsibility of the core security along the 22.7-km high-speed airport link. The paramilitary force had sought two weeks to mobilise over 400 personnel required to guard the tracks. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation officials are hopeful that once the deployment is over, it should not take more than two to three days to throw the line open. The officials concerned say talks are on with airlines to get them to set up counters at the stations on the line. CM’s detractors left in cold
The reshuffle in the Delhi cabinet has brought smiles on some faces while a few others have been sulking. The joy of journalist-turned-politician Ramakant Goswami, the lone new face in the cabinet, is obvious and so is the despair of Mangat Ram Singhal, the only one to be dropped. There are others like AK Walia who continue to be ministers but with a lesser profile with some key ministries taken away from them. The interesting aspect of the entire reshuffle drama is that nobody seems willing to give vent to his/her feelings. The assertion of authority by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has silenced those who thought she was no longer a favourite of the high command. They do not know what would befall them if they criticise her. The buzz is that her detractors are regrouping and weighing their options before taking on Dikshit. High-profile power thieves
What is common between a manpower training centre, guest house, saloon, playschool, call centre, injection moulding factory and a 'gurukul'? For one, they all have been caught stealing electricity by the enforcement teams of the power distribution company. Not only that, many of these establishments are housed in up-market and posh south, west and east Delhi locations. One of them is run by a retired Army officer. The clampdown by the discoms over the last few days has unearthed the pilferage of electricity in most unlikely places and by most unlikely people. They have been slapped with heavy penalty and official sources attribute the uncovering of the theft to the usage of modern technologies. Metro’s falling standards
Burdened with its rapid expansion, the Metro seems to have compromised its overall quality, at least this is what many regulars on the transport system believe. Leave aside the frequent snags, especially on the Huda City Centre line, which hold up trains almost every week, Metro passengers lament that the rush to open new lines has resulted in poor quality workmanship at several new stations. The marble floors at many stations like Malviya Nagar and Saket have developed spots which, they say, is a result of the poor quality of marbles as well as masonry. The overall craftsmanship at the new stations also pales in comparison to its quality at the old lines like the ones connecting to Dwarka and Delhi University.
