Four persons were killed while six others were injured in separate accidents on the Barwala-Panchkula National Highway-73 and the Panchkula-Pinjore National Highway-22 since late last night. The two “killer stretches” have already claimed around 80 lives in the past two years.

Murder Case
Complainant seeks CBI inquiry
Accuses police of irregularities
Chandigarh, February 19
Just about a month after Punjab MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu was accused of maneuvering the probe in a murder case, the victim’s son and complainant has demanded a CBI probe on the ground of irregularities by the police. At least six instances of alleged irregularities have been pointed out in the plea.

Procedures for pain relief demonstrated

On the first day of the annual national conference of the Indian Society for the Study of Pain, a live demonstration of various blocks and procedures for relief of pain was held in the operation theatre and was relayed to the Bhargava Auditorium at the PGI here yesterday.

Character building has ‘taken a backseat’ at educational institutes

“There is a drastic change in moral values, as character building, the most important competent of education, is no longer a priority of education institutes,” said Major Gen MS Kandal, who completed his matriculation at Panjab University (Lahore) in 1946.

Kuldeep Kaur PU’s oldest alumni visit campus
Kuldeep Kaur (86), a Mohali resident and among the oldest alumni of PU, present at the alumni meet today said she fondly remembered the days when she completed her matriculation at Lahore. “I retired in 1985 as a professor from Punjabi University, Patiala. The proudest moments were when my daughter also sought admission to the English department in this university.”

Hall of fame soon
Chandigarh, February 19
Panjab University may soon have a hall of fame at its alumni house with portraits of illustrious alumni placed on its walls. The alumni association of the PU, headed by VC RC Sobti, will initially shortlist portraits of six to seven alumni and the gallery would be upgraded gradually.

Farmers to move HC

With no outcome emerging out of a meeting with the Chief Minister yesterday, the agitating farmers of Bhankarpur village have decided to move the Punjab and Haryana High Court, besides carrying on with their agitation, to get justice. The farmers had accused the state government of ignoring their demands and not finding a solution to their problem.

Reptile comes out of tap
Fatehgarh Sahib, February 19
Panic gripped in Navi Aabadi area of Sirhind when a small reptile came out of a water tap this morning. The reptile crawled out from the water tap in the house of Mohanjit, a resident of Navi Abadi. Mohanjit’s wife was the first one to spot a snake-like creature coming out from the water tap. She immediately informed her husband and neighbours, who expressed shock to see the crawling reptile coming out of the tap, the water of which is also used for drinking purposes.

Gang of burglars busted, 3 held
Chandigarh, February 19
The Chandigarh Police has busted a gang involved in recent burglaries in the city with the arrest of three persons here today. The accused have been identified as Mukesh, alias Chikna, a resident of Sector 16, Vikram from Uttarakhand and Manpreet Sharma, alias Montu, a resident of Amritsar.

High drama at RLA office
Man beats up wife, breaks her teeth
Chandigarh, February 19
High drama was witnessed in front of the Regional Licensing Authority office in Sector 17 when a man allegedly beat up his wife when she was about to leave the office at 2 pm today. Kiran, who is a data entry operator at the RLA office, was left with two broken front teeth following an alleged attack with a helmet by her husband, Parikh Kundra.

Illegal Sand Mining
4 tractor-trailers, 2 trucks seized
Mohali, February 19
Officials of the Mohali mining department and the district administration today conducted a raid near Dairi village and seized four tractor-trailers and two trucks that were used for illegal sand and earth mining in a seasonal rivulet here. A case under the the Mining Act has been registered against the violtaors at the Sohana police station.

Motorcycles stolen
Chandigarh, February 19 Anil Singh Rawat, a resident of Dashmesh Nagar, Naya Gaon, reported that someone had stolen his Pulsar Motorcycle (CH-03-V- 4109) from SCO 129-130 in Sector 9, Chandigarh, on Thursday. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 3 police station.

25-yr-old woman ends life
Chandigarh, February 19
A 25-year-old woman of Sector 20 allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself with a ceiling fan this afternoon. The deceased, Hemlata, who was married to Rahul, an employee in a private company, was found hanging by her younger brother Gaurav, on his return from his educational institute. Gaurav stays with his sister in Sector 20. Rahul was reportedly at his work place at the time of the incident, said police sources.

Youth jumps to death
Mohali, February 19
A 29-year-old resident of Ropar, Ramandeep, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the third floor of Ivy Hospital in Sector 70 here late last night. The victim was admitted to the hospital after he received serious injuries during an accident on January 28 at Ropar. The hospital at Ropar had referred him to Ivy Hospital.

The Zirakpur police has booked two DJ owners for playing loud music at marriage palaces on the Zirakpur-Kalka highway after 10.30 pm on Friday night.
