HelpAge plans volunteer support to take care of abandoned
Jalandhar, October 25 The society has plans to involve 250 young trained volunteers, who would register such members, visit them at least thrice a day, take care of their various daily needs, sit and spend some time with them and ensure that they have their meals and medicines properly in time. The proposal would also take into account the factor that when these elderly people have to visit any of their relatives out of station and stay there overnight, these volunteers would instead sleep at their homes ensuring security of their belongings. “Most parents of the NRI children do not leave their homes for the same reasons or even if they have to go somewhere urgently, they feel insecure. They have a reason to think that way for there have been a number of cases where such houses have been made targets”, said Surinder Saini, who represents the Jalandhar Welfare Society. He pointed out that such parents were not short of money. “Their only concern is that there’s no one to feed them medicines and look after them”, he pointed out. He said the 250 volunteers include girls in large numbers who had been helping old people in urban slums. Such people had their own peculiar problems, including want of money, shelter and early death of the sons due to drug addiction. Bhavneshwar Sharma, regional head of HelpAge India, Chandigarh, said the issue needed immediate concern. The organisation is yet to get a detailed proposal and formulate any suitable strategy thereof. The representatives of the social body had got together at the Jalandhar Press Club on the occasion of the Global Community Day. On the day, they organised a visit and interaction of 15 elderly members from an associated NGO, Baba Sain Bhagat Welfare Society Khanna, with the media over the lunch. Pradeep Thapliyan of Citi Financial Consumer Finance today offered a financial aid of Rs 500 to each of the visiting elderlies. The ordeals of these persons were videographed by HelpAge to be shown to school and college children and arousing concern on the matter. While one of the visiting elderly said he had taken shelter in a gurdwara, there was yet another man who said he had been putting up at a cremation ground. |
