Gurdaspur, October 22
Food Corporation of India officials in Gurdaspur district are livid over the Punjab Government’s decision to take away four procurement centres from the corporation, leaving them clueless over how to achieve the target of procuring 50,000 metric tonnes of paddy this season.

Four procurement centres have been withdrawn by the government, leaving the FCI with just eight centres, out of which the FCI has to share three with the government procurement agencies.

FCI area manager Nahar Singh disclosed, “We are required to procure 10 per cent of the total arrivals of paddy in this district, which comes to about 50,000 metric tonnes. With four centres being withdrawn from us, we may fall short of the target.”

There are 104 procurement centres in the district and the FCI was asked to procure paddy at 12 centres. However, in the first week of October, when paddy started arriving at the centres, the state government asked the FCI officials to procure paddy at five centres and also asked it to share three centres with different state procurement agencies.

“Four centres were taken away while the target was not reduced,” claimed an FCI officer.

Vinod Bhushan, manager (quality control), FCI, said, “Some farmers have shown resentment as we do not procure paddy which has moisture content beyond 17 per cent, which has been specified by the Central Government. We are satisfied with the procurement process going on at our centres, but what is worrisome is how to achieve the target.”

Area manager Nahar Singh said, “It will be hard for us to achieve the target of procuring 50,000 metric tonnes of paddy. However, we are trying to devise ways and means to ensure that we get near the target. On the payment front, we are releasing payment to the farmers through commission agents within 48 hours of procurement.”

Non-lifting of paddy: Arhtiyas give memo to ADC

Nawanshahr: The errant arrangements for lifting the procured paddy coupled with inclement weather has added to the woes of the arhtiyas and farmers here.

Irate arhtiyas of Banga, Mukandpur, Soondh, Behram, Hakimpur, Mahil Gehilan, Uchcha Ladhana and Kataria of the Banga block in the district, led by former MLA from Banga Tarlochan Singh Sondh, district Congress president Kuldip Singh Rana and PPCC member Vipan Taneja, today submitted a memorandum to the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) raising the demand to pay immediate attention to lifting of procured paddy from the mandis.

“Though the SAD-BJP government is clamouring to be championing the cause of the farmers, but the paddy procurement, especially the process of lifting, has been causing great inconvenience to the farmers as well as the arhtiyas,” said the former Congress MLA, while alleging malpractices going on in the mandis. The Congress would stand by the farmers and the arhtiyas and not hesitate to launch a stir if the government failed to safeguard their interests, the leaders said. — OC

Thanks to Deputy CM, PUDA complex gets a facelift

Jalandhar, October 22
The visitors to the PUDA Complex area on the Ladowali Road were in for a surprise today. The market area looked plush unlike all the previous years, since it had been developed. But the high security around the area soon made things clear.

It was in preparation for the visit of the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, to a media office in the evening, that the excessive wild growth was removed by men deployed through the day.

Cops call him CM

The visit, however, had its flip side. Many commuters to the area were prevented from parking their vehicles, right in front of their offices, by happy-to-stop cops who claimed that the ‘CM’ was coming.

PR exercise

Sukhbir Badal seems to be on a big public relations’ exercise in the city for the past two days, visiting media offices. He called on various mediapersons and spent time with them, probably trying to request them to soft pedal on the current controversies surrounding his cousin and former FM Manpreet Badal.

The trees around the area, that had remained untouched ever since they had been planted, were being pruned.

Deep trenches in the entire parking area were being filled up to ensure a smooth ride for him. Several cars, often illegally parked by a car bazaar owner, were forcibly shifted to another lot.

The owners of the SCOs around the area were rather excited to see the developments. Many were heard saying, “Our repeated requests to the PUDA officials to ensure maintenance of the area have remained unheard. Thank you, Deputy CM for visiting the area. The area got cleaned up at least for a day.”

Our Correspondent adds from Phillaur:
In a surprising move, the Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal visited nearby Kahna Dhesian village, went to a religious dera and had a one-hour-long closed-door meeting with Dera head Sant Surinder Singh, this afternoon.

Though it was a personal and secret meeting, it was learnt that several political, social and religious issues were discussed in detail during the course of it.

Badal assured to construct a link road to the dera. He also instructed the paddy procurement agencies to accelerate their campaigns and make adequate arrangements for speedy lifting of the crops. Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Priyank Bharti also remained present in the village during Badal’s visit.

Hoshiarpur experiences squall

Hoshiarpur, October 22
Hoshiarpur and its surrounding areas experienced a squall followed by hailstorm caused a considerable fall in the temperature. Due to high velocity winds, a tree was uprooted and fell on electric wires near the Government Elementary School on the Hoshiarpur-Una road, due to which the electric supply from the Sadhu Ashram feeder was disrupted for hours together. The intermittent rainfall continued up to 2 pm and compelled a majority of the people to take out woollen clothes.

Rain water flooded the entire city and due to choking of drains and unsanitary conditions, water entered the houses in the low lying localities of the town. This rain would adversely affect the harvest of paddy and maize crops and the standing potato crop.

Deputy Commissioner Dharam Dutt Tarnech said he had instructed officials of all the procurement agencies, food and supply department and sub divisional magistrates (civil) to first make arrangements of immediate lifting of procured paddy. — OC
