Manchester, October 22
England striker Wayne Rooney ended doubts over his Manchester United future on Friday when he agreed a five-year contract with the Premier League club. Days after indicating that he wanted to leave because of his concerns about the “future squad”, Rooney has now pledged himself to the club until 2015.

“It's been a difficult week, but the intensity of the coverage is what we expect at Manchester United," United manager Alex Ferguson told the club's website (www.manutd.com). “I said to the boy that the door is always open and I’m delighted Wayne has agreed to stay. Sometimes, when you're in a club, it can be hard to realise just how big it is and it takes something like the events of the last few days to make you understand. I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is.”

Rooney, 24, who joined United as a teenager, had been linked with a move to mega-rich rivals Manchester City since news of his disenchantment at Old Trafford broke. However, after a series of talks with the club and his agent Paul Stretford he completed a dramatic U-turn on Friday.

“I'm delighted to sign another deal at United," Rooney, who has scored 132 goals in 289 appearances for United, told United's website. “In the last couple of days, I've talked to the manager and the owners and they've convinced me this is where I belong. I said on Wednesday the manager's a genius and it's his belief and support that have convinced me to stay.” — Reuters

Undercover agents just a thought: Lorgat

Mumbai, October 22
Facing flak for mulling use of undercover agents posing as bookies to test players' honesty, the International Cricket Council (ICC) today said it was just a suggestion and nothing has been finalised on the issue.

"It's not a plan at the moment. There were a lot of suggestions or thinking that was going on. One such suggestion was to consider some sort of undercover player that would ensure the players report what they are obliged to do," ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

"It's only a thought at this stage and I might say it's not a bad thought," he added. The proposal had not gone down well with the Australian and England Cricketers' Associations, who had cast doubts on the viability of such a plan.

Lorgat also expressed satisfaction at the action taken by the Pakistan Cricket Board in implementing the ICC guidelines, following the spot-fixing scandal in which three of its players -- Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir - were the accused.

"I am very encouraged to see the way PCB has responded. They had always said that they would take a zero tolerance approach to it. We now see that they are actually implementing it. I am very happy to see that," he said. — PTI

HI to send teams to Asiad: SC
R Sedhuraman
Legal Correspondent

New Delhi, October 22
The Supreme Court today allowed Hockey India (HI) to select and send the Indian teams to the Asian Games to be held in Guangzhou on the banks of Pearl River in China. A Bench comprising Justices RV Raveendran and HL Gokhale, however, asked HI, the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) together with the Sports Ministry and try to resolve their problems.

The apex court had earlier allowed HI to field the Indian hockey teams for the Women’s World Cup in Argentina and the Commonwealth Games held in Delhi as HI was the only organization in the country holding accreditation with the International Hockey Federation (FIH). On the other hand, IHF is the only body recognized by the Indian government. The Asian Games are to be held in China from November 12-27. As soon as the case was taken up today, the Bench said “You have lost the match. Tensions have subsided. What is the problem now?” The court was obviously referring to Indian men hockey team’s humiliating 0-8 defeat at the hands of Australia in the CWG final. HI counsel Mukul Rohatgi said the court was being approached because of the Asian Games. He said HI had selected the same teams that were fielded for the CWG.

The Bench slated the next hearing for December so that the case could be disposed of before the annual accreditation of HI with FIH came to a close at the end of the year.

Manjit Kaur, gold medal winner in 4X400 metres relay in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games believes that nothing can substitute “hardwork”. The state government has announced a cash award of Rs 7 lakhs for her and she has also been recommended for promotion to the rank of DSP in the Punjab Armed Police (PAP). The Arjuna awardee spoke to The Tribune, excerpts:

Q. You won gold for the state in the CWG. How has the journey been so far?

A. It has been consistent practise of six months, which led to the gold in the Games. There was hardly any family function which I attended during this period. Probably I cannot recall even a single family get together in the last six months. Gold was my aim and I achieved it.

Q.What is your next target?

A. Right now I am eyeing the Asian Games scheduled for next month. After winning a gold in the CWG I have to prove my mettle in the Asian Games again. I would be reaching China on November 13. And my event will take place between November 23 to 27. I am focusing on improving my performance further.

Q. Post CWG-2010 it must be raining awards?

A. The state government has announced a cash award of Rs 7 lakhs while the Deputy CM today said that I would be promoted as DSP soon. I have achieved my goal and already set targets for the next. Let us see when this turns into reality.

Q. Your home cadre PAP must have planned something big for you?

A. Nothing as of now. It is sad that while other departments like ONGC, Indian Railways and Army have showered their medal winners with cash awards of Rs 10-15 Lakhs, PAP has not announced anything in this regard. Appreciation and awards actually give us the much-needed boost. It all depends on the department.

Q.How were the CWG arrangements and the experience of winning a gold in your own country?

A. It was a satisfying experience winning a gold medal in your own country. My joy knew no bounds. As soon as the medal ceremony was over I spoke to my brother first. It was a memorable moment. And the arrangements during the CWG were the best….probably we never came across any such world class facilities in any other country. It was a superb show.

Q. What are your marriage plans?

A. Well nothing is in the pipeline right now. My family will decide about my marriage plans after the Asian Games. It will definitely be an arranged marriage and my parents will decide about this. In fact marriage is not on the agenda. Even if there is any family get together I prefer to spend some quality time with them instead of discussing about marriage plans. Right now my focus is Asian Games.

Q.Right now you are undergoing training at NIS, Patiala. How are things shaping up?

A. My coach R.S. Sidhu at NIS, Patiala is providing the best training to me. Right now I am practicing from 7 am to 9.30 am and 4.30 pm to 7 pm daily. Besides a regular diet and fitness regime is helping me in improving my performance. While my Russian coach helped me in enhancing my endurance.

Weather may play spoilsport at biking event

Shimla, October 22
Though the blood is raring to go on a long ride through the steep, narrow forest pathways of the hilly terrain, the sudden change in weather might just dampen the spirit of the participants of the 6th edition of the Mountain Terrain Biking (MTB) that takes off from here tomorrow.

Heavy snow on higher reaches and incessant rains here today presented a gloomy picture for the exciting sporting event, particularly with the local meteorological office warning that inclement weather conditions would persist for another 48 hours. The slippery road conditions would certainly put the bikers’ lives at stake.

However, Mohit Sood, president of the Himalayan Adventure Sports and Tourism Promotion Association (HASTPA), which is organising the event, said alternative routes were being chalked out and if rains continued, the rally would reach Sainj for the night halt on the first day through a shorter route.

Unlike the previous editions, which culminated at Manali, the rally will return to Shimla after covering 540 km over eight days to conclude on October 30. The competitive stretches will cover 320 km and the highest point of ascent will be the Jalori Pass (3,223m). The rally will reach the pass on the fifth day. Introduced in 2005, the MTB has been gaining popularity with time.
