Dharamsala, October 22
Heavy rains and hailstorms that lashed the region last evening have damaged paddy fields and vegetable crops at certain places.

Unprecedented rain was reported from the Dharamsala region till the filing of this news.

The Dhauladhar hills overlooking Kangra valley wore a white mantle of snow, as they received first snowfall of the region. The temperature in the region has dipped considerably.

The rain has caused heavy damage to paddy crop that was ready for harvest in the district. At places, cut paddy was found floating in the water that inundated the fields. Sources told The Tribune that rains were likely to expose paddy to fungal diseases and result in blacking of the produce.

Vice-Chancellor of Palampur Agriculture University SK Sharma said if the rain persisted, it was likely to cause serious damage to the paddy crop. “My advice to farmers would be that they should not harvest the standing crop till the weather clears. Rains at this time are unexpected,” he said. The Agriculture Department authorities have ordered their field offices to gauge the extent of damage to crops. Farmers in Una district also complained of heavy damage. They said, “We were happy that crop would be bumper this year. However, the rains have brought us to square one .”

Nurpur: Heavy rains along with hailstorms today wrecked havoc on standing paddy crops in some part of this sub-division. Kandwal and Baranda gram panchayats were the worst hit, where hailstorms damaged about 90 per cent paddy crop ready for harvesting. Farmers, led by Narinder and Rajinder Singh - pradhans of both gram panchayats - today appealed local MLA Rakesh Pathania to raise their voice before the state government about this havoc.

SHIMLA: A number of tourists were stranded between Rohtang Pass and Manali as slippery conditions created by snow disrupted the movement of vehicles. The key tourist resort of Manali had the first snowfall of the season, receiving 6 cm snowfall while the Solang Nullah had 20 cm. The Rohtang Pass (13,050 ft), gateway to tribal Lahaul valley, received 65-cm snowfall. The Rohtang Pass that was to be closed from October 31 had been closed today.

Solan, October 22
With the district administration making concerted efforts for the past two days for a reconciliation between the Barru Sahib-based Eternal University and its students, things seem to have smoothened a bit.

The administration, led by ADM Lokender Chauhan, Additional SP Sanjeev Lakhanpal and SDM Rajgarh Rakesh Maria, held several rounds of talks with the varsity administration and the students to chalk out an amicable solution.

ADM told The Tribune that the Chancellor Baba Kingra on behalf of the university had assured that the security of the students would be given the utmost priority and even those guilty of being involved in last week’s violent clash would not be taken to task.

Last week’s violent clash between two students’ groups had left 12 of them injured and 16 suspended. Later, some members of the faculty, too, had got involved in the clash.

He added that there was no evidence of ragging having taken place.

Additional SP Lakhanpal said though parents were asked to join the talks today, they did not turn up. They have been asked to come on October 27, so that their confidence could be restored .Meanwhile, resenting the lack of action against faculty members who had attacked the students with swords, Parents’ Association president RK Gupta said they could not allow the erring teachers to get off scot-free.

Mandi, October 22
The main accused in the smuggling of four Buddha idols, Vinod, a ragpicker, has been arrested.

The Bilaspur police claimed today that Vinod and his accomplices had stolen the idols from the Buddhist monastery at Riwalsar, Mandi, during the Chishu fair in March this year.

To ascertain the authenticity of the idols, the police has sent these to the Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI).

A police team under ASP Bilaspur, Bhagat Singh Thakur, posing as a decoy customer, struck a deal with some smugglers and raided their houses in Mandi on October 14-15. The idols were recovered from these smugglers.

What has intrigued the police is that the monastery caretaker at Riwalsar has not lodge a complaint of theft of the four idols ftill date.

The caretaker could not be contacted as he was away to Budh Gaya in Bihar, the police said.

The four persons arrested on the intervening night of October 19-20 are Balbir, Rajinder, Shengu and Vinod.

The police had arrested seven persons, including a taxi driver, on October 14 in connection with the case.

SP Bilaspur, Kapil Sharma said: “We have sent stolen idols to the ASI and its report is awaited. We have arrested 11 persons in the case and further investigations are on.”
