Cops fail to crack idols’ mystery
Shimla, October 16 Those arrested in this connection have told the police that the idols were given to them by a scrap dealer. The police has now dispatched teams to arrest the scrap dealer who is at present out of Himachal. It was on a tip-off from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) which helped the police recover these valuable idols from Mandi. Those involved in the illegal act were trying to strike a deal for the idols, which could fetch a huge amount in the international market. “We are trying to trace the person who reportedly gave the idols to the arrested persons for sale and the teams have been sent outside the state,” said S.R. Mardi, ADGP (Law and Order). He said the police was trying to establish link to ascertain the exact place from where these idols belonged. Police sources said most likely these idols could have been brought from some temple or monastery in the tribal districts of Kinnaur and Lahaul Spiti. This was not the first time that such incident had taken place as rare artifacts had been stolen from temples in various parts of the state. In fact, it was in April earlier this year that a century old bell was stolen from the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) here. Police investigations into the case had revealed that some people had tried to steal a similar ancient bell from Biji Mahadev temple in Kullu also. The police had still not been able to trace the bell stolen from IIAS. The George Cross stolen from the house of a widow, Brahmi Devi, in Bilaspur had made international news when it was put up for sale by an auction house in London. Even though the state government was able to stall the auction, it has still not been able to get the medal back despite repeated requests from the widow. The frequent thefts of idols have, however, confirmed that smugglers have been eyeing these
valuables which fetch a huge price in the international market. |
Dhumal opens Shahpur degree college building
Kangra, October 16 He also opened 30-metre span Lanjhni bridge over Banoi Khad on Upper Odder Vishnu road, constructed at a cost of Rs 145 lakh, for adjoining villages. Addressing a public meeting, Prof. Dhumal said the NIFT had started functioning in Kangra district where national-level educational and vocational education facilities would be available to the youth. He said Central University would start from Monday at a temporary complex at Shahpur. He said the private participation was also being motivated to bring about quality change in the education system. He said IIT classes had also been started at Mandi and ESI Medical College would also start its teaching activities by the next financial year. Prof. Dhumal said foundation stones for a number of projects were laid by leaders of the previous government without making any budgetary provisions in a bid to cheat the local people. He said it was only on his coming to power that adequate budget was provided for all pending schemes for its completion. He said uniform development of every area was being ensured by rising above all considerations. He said the state had entered into an agreement with Patanjali Yog Peeth, Haridwar, which would be purchasing 15 herbs grown in the state for its medicinal use. He said the Peeth would soon be opening its complex at Sadhupul in Solan district to give a boost to herbal cultivation. He said the state had recommended setting up of a BSF Battalion at Shahpur by making required land available for it. He sanctioned Rs 80,000 for 5-year-old girl Arpita of Sarau village, for her heart operation at IGMC. Sarveen Chaudhary, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister, thanked the Chief Minister for dedicating new building to the students of the college. |

Goddess Hadimba heads for Kullu Dasehra
Manali, October 16 Notably, unless the palanquin of Goddess Hadimba, wife of Bhima, one of the five Pandva brothers, reaches Kullu, the festival does not begin. At a distance of about 2 km from here stands a temple in a pagoda-shaped structure, built about 500 years ago and popularly known as the Dhungri temple. Hundreds of devotees set out on a journey from the Dhungri temple this morning, carrying the palanquin for Kullu so that the Dasehra festival begins tomorrow on time. The event is referred to as “Vida Dashami” (Vijaya Dashmi), a time to celebrate the victory of good over evil. Kullu Dasehra is unlike any other festival across the country. Interestingly, no effigies of Ravana, Kumbakarana and Meghnath are burnt in Kullu. Idols of various gods and goddesses, accompanied by their devotees, assemble at the Dhalpur ground for the celebrations. The palanquin of Goddess Hadimba is taken to a place where a messenger carrying a silver “chhari” comes to escort the deity to the Raghunath temple, the presiding deity of Kullu Dasehra. |
